Industry researcher to be involved in innovation. However I love teaching and would eventually like to return to academia someday.
Background (academic and extracurricular) and experience, including research, teaching,
industry, and other relevant information.
In the MIT Media Labs Workshop, I prototyped a ‘Virtual Playground’, using basic image processing to create a new user interface
through a cameraprojector system. I came back to college and decided to work on it further by approaching Dr. K Madhava Krishna.
We made a scaled virtual football ground, where players play physically with the projection, and presented it at the Annual R&D
Showcase. I then decided to apply for an Honors degree, which allows highly motivated students to pursue undergraduate research.
My work under Dr. Madhav Krishna over the last 2 years (in the Robotics Research Centre) has taken me on a more CS oriented path.
Our idea is to implement image processing onboard (microcontrollersize) for autonomous/flying robots, without communicating
with a larger unit. I have worked on the ArduEye, the Raspberry Pi, and then an Indigenously Built Quadcopter project at our lab.
I decided to opt for more exposure to Computer Science through a summer internship at Qualcomm in 2014. I worked on creating a
Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected media player. I was given full freedom to research the existing framework, explore and
come up with a solution.
In Statistical Methods in AI, I chose to take up a Sentiment Analysis project and decided to work on ‘SpatioTemporal Event
Detection from Social Media’. After a lot of research I chose aggressive tweet filtering and preprocessing, with hierarchical tweet
clustering and ranking for event detection. I then used Google Maps API to plot events on the map. In Cloud Computing, I made a
datawarehousing solution based on Spark SQL and Hadoop integration. We facilitate users in querying big data efficiently, as well as
provide graphical results for fast data insights.
During my undergrad, I was able to balance many responsibilities: being the EditorinChief of my university student magazine,
Cultural Coordinator, Student Mentor and a Teaching Assistant for Digital Logic and Processors, Intro to Humanities.
Please give a Statement of Purpose detailing your academic and research goals as well as
career plans. Include your reasons for choosing the College of Computing as opposed to
other programs and/or other universities.
