Acceptance of Same Sex Marriage

A philosopher named Blaise Pascal once said: “Love has reasons which reason cannot
understand”.

28 out of 88 countries in the world agree with same sex marriage. Philippines is one of
the countries who does not agree with it. As a millennial, I am in favor in making same sex
marriage legal in our country. To support my stand, there are four points in this paper that
support my stand.

First, our present Constitution, as the supreme law of the land, promotes JUSTICE and
EQUALITY. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity. The very sickness of this
country is discrimination in the form of gender inequality. Recently, a trans woman named
Gretchen Diez experienced this kind of discrimination and non-acceptance from the people as
well as from the government. How ironic it is that our Constitution, being the guarantor of our
rights, promotes justice and equality, but our government, especially the law-making body,
defeats the very essence of justice and equality in defending the rights of the LGBT community.
The LGBT community cries for justice and equality. They are asking the masses for acceptance.
According to Article III, Section 1 of the present Constitution, "no person shall be deprived of
life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor shall any person be denied the equal
protection of the laws." The LGBT community is also a community of human beings. They also
deserve to be respected. In fact, one of the members of the law-making body acknowledged
that LGBTQ+ are homo sapiens or simply, humans. As human beings, they are also covered with
this provision of the Constitution. They have also the right of liberty. That liberty they have
includes the liberty to choose and marry the person they want.

Second, our Constitution respects LOVE and HUMAN DIGNITY. Even the LGBT
community deserves to be loved and the members of which have also that human dignity that
they are holding on. The love between couples who are with the same sex should be respected.
As stated in Article II, Section 11 of the 1987 Constitution , the State values the dignity of every
human person and guarantees full respect for human rights. Such couples deserve respect
because they are also humans with dignity and a right to choose freely the person who they
want to marry.

Third, our Constitution makes sure that its people enjoy the FREEDOM and LIBERTY
that our ancestors fought for. History teaches us that our ancestors fought for our freedom. What
do you think is the reason behind it? It is to tell us that we all deserve freedom including the
LGBT community. Under Article II, Section 5 of the 1987 Constitution, the maintenance of
peace and order, the protection of life and, liberty, and property, and the promotion of the
general welfare are essential for the enjoyment by all the people of the blessings of democracy.
Let us not judge personality that the LGBT community has. Let them enjoy the things that they
do and let them enjoy the lives they have to the fullest. Thus, let us remove the barriers between
the LGBT community and the non LGBT community.

Fourth, there is a Latin legal maxim called Parens Patriae. It literally means “parent of
his or her country”. In law, it refers to the public policy power of the state to intervene against an
abusive or negligent parent, legal guardian, or informal caretaker, and to act as the parent of any
child or individual who is in need of protection. Thus, the same sex couples have an important
role in this responsibility of the State. It is true that same sex couples cannot conceive a child.
Thus, in order to have a child, they need to adopt. In connection with "parens patriae", the best
way for the children, who previously not given proper care and love, to have a better future is to
give them parents who will love them truly and here plays the role of the same sex couples.
Instead of putting these children in DSWD center, why not to give them to the same sex couples
who cannot conceive a child of their own?

As a conclusion, the LGBT community need to be respected. They want acceptance and
not judgment. They want respect in every decision they are making and the way they live their
life because they are humans too living in the same world with us. We cannot question the love
of the same sex couples because love has reasons which reason cannot understand. All we need
to do is to accept that love. After all, the Constitution says to respect every individual in this
country.
