SECTION 208: a) Determination of Cv, Seismic coefficent

EARTHQUAKE LOADS

208.1.1 Purpose
The purpose of the succeeding earthquake provisions is
primarily to design seismic-resistant structures to
safeguard against major structural damage that may lead
to loss of life and property. These provisions are not
intended to assure zero-damage to structures nor maintain
their functionality after a severe earthquake.

b) Determination of Nv, Near-source factor, if in
Seismic Zone 4
Where:
Ca – Seismic Coefficient, Table 208-7
Cv – Seismic Coefficient, Table 208-8
I – Importance Factor, Table 208-1
Nv – Near-source factor used in the determination of Cv
in Seismic Zone 4 related to both the proximity of the
building or structure to known faults with magnitudes as
set forth in Tables 208-4 to 208-6
R – numerical coefficient representative of the inherent
over-strength and global ductility capacity of lateral-
force-resisting systems, as set forth in Table 208-11or
208-12
T – elastic fundamental period of vibration of the
structure in the direction under consideration, see section
208.5.2.2
W – total seismic dead load defined in Section 208.5.2.1
Z – Seismic zone factor, Table 208-3
