Rumours are circulating of a potential dumping site in Bacchus Marsh

for contaminated soil coming from the West Gate Tunnel Project.
The Maddingley Brown Coal Mine is one of three locations being
thrown around by mainstream media as a potential site for the soil.
Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr David Edwards is not happy despite
numerous requests for information from relevant government
departments.
“We have also asked to be consulted before any decisions are made,”
he said.
“The lack of consultation to date has been disappointing. Council
is urgently seeking a meeting with the Minister for Transport
Infrastructure to ensure the process is far more transparent than it has
been to date.”
Cr Edwards told the Moorabool News Council has communicated key
issues for consideration about the risks associated with contaminated
soil to our community, the environment, and the impact to traffic and
safety on our roads.
It is believed possible dangers to these industries may come from
the alleged low level PFAs and small amounts of asbestos found in
surrounding areas of the Tunnel Project’s soil.
Maddingley Brown Coal responded to questions from the Moorabool
News and said they “are working to develop a proposal to receive,
manage and dispose of the West Gate Tunnel Project soil in line with
best practice.”
“However, as this is a competitive commercial process, we are not
able to provide further details,” a spokesperson from MBC said.
A response from a government spokesperson for Minister for Major
Projects Jacinta Allan and local MPs Steve McGhie and Michaela Settle,
told the Moorabool News, “no decision has been made on a site.”
“Transurban and its builder are working with the EPA and Worksafe
to ensure contaminated soil is managed and removed safely,” the
spokesperson said.

“The CFA was formed to protect the lives
and property of those in the local community,
it’s been overwhelming to receive such great
support in return,” Mr Smith said.
The six CFA volunteers formed a guard of
honour for Novak Djokovic and Dominic
Thiem before their match, Mr Smith spoke of
Djokovic’s kindness pre-match.
“Novak made the time to come out before
the match and shake our hands, which I
thought was an amazing gesture,” Mr Smith
said.

thousands of men and women still fighting

A drug-driven burglary has heard
Magistrate Leonard Brear tell the court,
“this gentleman needs to understand the
community has little patience for this type
of offending.”
When interviewed on October 7 by police,
Stewart said an “alarm was going off for a
number of days which confirmed no one was
home”. He also said his motive was “to get
money for drugs.”
The accused’s lawyer described the incident
as “unplanned” and “unpremeditated”,

The 23-year old accused Lee Stewart,

guilty plea.

in his home October 1 2019.
The prosecution told the court Stewart
walked past a Dickson street (Bacchus
Marsh) property and proceeded to look into
the backyard after hearing an alarm coming
from the house.
“It was at this time that Stewart noticed
an estimated $10,000 worth of items
inside the Dickson street garage, which he
subsequently stole with an unknown co-

decision,” Magistrate Brear said.
Stewart was remanded in custody to
reappear in court at a later date for sentencing.

Lal Lal Falls Reserve contains one of the
most spectacular waterfalls in the Moorabool
area however, on Saturday 1 February it
contained a stolen car that was used as
projectile over the cliff.
The stolen car was found at the bottom of
the Falls after being dumped by an unknown
person or persons.
Victoria Police confirmed to the Moorabool
News the stolen car was believed to be taken
from a Soldier’s Hill address before being
catapulted over the edge of the Falls.

driven at speed and through wooden
bollards.
“Police were called to the scene shortly
before 11am and confirmed no one was
inside the vehicle,” a Vicpol spokesperson
said.

Facebook page saying his “daughter [owned
the] car and she still has to pay for it.”
“The two kid’s seats are even still in there.
She is a single parent,” the comment read.
The investigation remains ongoing.

Ballan Police
A woman has lost a piece of jewellery on
Monday 4 February, after visiting a public
convenience in Ballan.
The public toilet, situated at the AA McLean
Reserve on the corner of Fisken and Inglis
streets, is believed to be where the gold ring
was lost.
“It was described as having a wide band
with a celtic design on the outside,” Acting
Sgt Nicholas Wallace told the Moorabool
News.
Police are requesting the item to be handed
into the Ballan Police Station, “if anyone
located the ring in the female toilets.”
The Ballan Police Station is located at 176
Inglis Street Ballan.

A caravan was destroyed on Monday 4
February after an ‘accidental fire’ at a Myers
Court address in Ballan
A man was using an angle grinder to cut
a bedding frame inside the caravan, with
sparks igniting within.

occurred on the night of Wednesday 29
January, both in Inglis Street Ballan.
Police said the offender(s) forced entry into
D & M Traders gift shop and rummaged
through drawers, but nothing was stolen.
The local hosptial opportunity shop was
also broken into with a small amount of cash
taken from the register and a donation tin,
located on the counter.

of Bungeeltap South Road, Mount Wallace
on Monday 27 January. Police said at this
stage, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

While Ballan was conducting a civic
ceremony with approximately 200
people in the Mechanics Hall, another
200 people were attending Bungaree’s
Australia Day celebrations this year,
watching on as three new families were
added to their Heritage Wall.
The Bungaree Historical Society’s
annual celebration, opened by
President Dennis Spielvogel, set out
to commemorate the people who
make “Bungaree a great place to live,”
Secretary Heather Trigg said.
“The wall was erected 12 years ago,”
Ms Trigg continued. “There are 61
plaques on the wall at the moment.”
Among the day’s festivities, 2019

Society’s “This is your Life” Award,

Speeding with drugs in his system warranted a court

Police Prosecutor Ivan Blomley told the court, before
Magistrate Bob Kumar, that painter James Stange was
intercepted by police travelling on the Geelong-Ballan Road

Sergeant Blomley told the court the accused was travelling
at an alleged speed of 115km/h in a 100km/h zone.
Upon police interception, Stange was ordered to undergo a
preliminary breath test, which came back negative.
“A subsequent preliminary oral fluid test was conducted
and returned a positive reading of methamphetamine,” he
said.
When interviewed by police, Sgt Blomley told the court
Stange said he “just had [methamphetamine] yesterday.”
Magistrate Kumar convicted and fined Stange a sum of $500,
with all the accused’s licences and permits cancelled. He was
also disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months.

fire started on Friday 31 January.
Houses along the Western Freeway were
most at risk, with the blaze burning on
the east bound side of the road and on the
median strip. In total three fires were in close
proximity of each other with large round hay
bales igniting in a paddock.
The State Control Centre said, “six trucks
and air support attended the fire, and it
took around an hour to bring the fire under
control.”

A Vic Roads spokesperson told the
Moorabool News, “Emergency services
notified us that a full closure of the Western
Freeway was required due to a fire at
Pentland Hills on at 7pm on Friday last
week.”
“Working alongside emergency services, we
detoured traffic via through Bacchus Marsh,
Gisborne, Woodend and Trentham.
“The freeway was reopened to traffic shortly
after 9pm,” the spokesperson said.

whether it was a cigarette butt that may have
started the fire.
The cause of the fire remains suspicious with
Moorabool CIU continuing to investigate the

A new service station, ‘convenience
restaurant’ and community building is likely
to be constructed in an area that already has
congested traffic conditions.
The permit application for the Gisborne
Road Bacchus Marsh site went before the
February council meeting, with extensive
debate over issues including traffic, noise
and operating hours.
The original proposal was to build the
service station and two ‘convenience
restaurants,’ along with signage, a three-lot
subdivision of the land and an access road.
A total of 31 objections were received
and a public meeting between some of the
objectors and the potential developer was
held in August last year.
The body of objections stated another
service station is not needed in the town;
the effect it will have on local business;
light spillage from the site; diesel fumes; the
proposed 24/7 opening hours and four on-
street parking spaces would be lost.
Increasing traffic congestion on an already
busy Gisborne road, was also a major factor.
The site is the same that Bunnings proposed
to build a store on back in 2015 however, that
was abandoned because of 200 plus objectors.
Council officers advised the developers
at the February meeting it would not be
agreeing to the permit with developers
responding they would be taking the matter
to a hearing at the Victorian Civil and
Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

in favour of a community-based building,

with further proposals about extensive
landscaping and acoustic fencing to limit the
aesthetic effects of the site.
Speaking on behalf of the applicant at the
meeting, Peter Doyle said they had agreed
to delete the second restaurant, but that the
operating hours remained a sticking point.
Council did not want to allow trading to
start from 6am on Saturdays and Sundays, as
part of the already-made compromise down
from 24/7 operation.
“We’ve put in over 12-months of work
in relation to this project, and significant
consultation with council,” Mr Doyle told
the meeting.
“The project is a $5-million investment
and 50 jobs, focused on youth employment.
We’ve worked hard to find a compromise,
and the deletion of the second restaurant has
an impact and we are prepared to commit to
the minor refinements.”
Cr Paul Tatchell argued the 6am start
should be allowed because if the matter did
go before VCAT, it would be likely to allow
the industry standard of a 24/7 operation.
Objector Wendy Stubbs said at the meeting,
“I’m not opposed to developing this site –
I’m opposed to this development, it’s not
appropriate.”
“This is a gateway to our town, it creates an
impression of our town,” she said.
Following a lengthy debate about the
development and VCAT, councillors voted in
favour of the amended development – with
Cr Bingham abstaining from voting.
A compulsory VCAT pre-hearing meeting
between all parties has been set for April
this year.

A guilty plea to a drug-driving charge has
resulted in a licence suspension for a 32-year-
old male.
The court heard on Friday 24 January,
Christopher Wait was travelling east along
the Western Freeway at Gordon in July last
year, when he failed to slow down his vehicle
for an emergency vehicle with flashing
lights.
Upon being intercepted by police, Wait
was asked to undergo a preliminary breath
test that returned a negative reading, a
preliminary oral fluid test returned a
positive reading.

sample was analysed and showed Wait had
cannabis in his system, the accused telling
police he had, “smoked a bong at eight this
morning.”
Wait’s lawyer said her client “still uses
drugs” and is “quite an anxious person.”
“He uses drugs as a coping mechanism,”
she said.
“People who drive with drugs in their
system should be disqualified from driving
on the road,” Magistrate Leonard Brear said.
Wait was disqualified from driving for a
period of six months and incurred a fine of
$750 with $84.40 in statutory costs.

One of the highest-ranking councils in

is the Moorabool Shire, according to statistics
released by RSPCA Victoria.
By the number of reports, Moorabool ranked
29th out of the council areas in Victoria, with
153 reports in 2018-2019.
But the shire jumped to fifth place when
ranking reports per capita, with one report
for every 223 people.

Bacchus Marsh fell heartbreakingly short of
a vital win in a nailbiting tie with Sunbury
United. Bacchus Marsh opened the bowling
on their home ground, remaining tight
throughout and not letting any batsmen
make a major impact on the scoreboard.
James Bailey (3/27 off 8) was the pick of the
bowlers, with Jack Powell (2/15 off 8); Kasun
Suriaratchie (2/28 off 8); and Tom Wardell
(1/23 off 8) picking up the remaining wickets.
The run chase looked to be a success with
captain James Lidgett (35 off 53) contributing
once again and Ben Robertson (21 off 54)
getting a start, before he fell in a small
collapse. The hosts lost 3/2 leaving two new
batsmen to chase 8 runs for victory from the
last over. Jack Powell and Connor Ascough
fought hard and scraped together 7 runs
ending the game in a draw. The tie leaves
Bacchus Marsh in 4th place, a point behind
Sunbury United.

Bacchus Marsh batted first in a major clash
with another big finals contender. They
managed to bat through until tea on the first
day until heavy rain stopped play, meaning
the second day moved from and over limit
to a time finish. Bacchus Marsh continued
on the second day at 2/72 with a clear plan,
bat time. Tom Dickinson (53) and Oliver
Powell (32) started the day after establishing
themselves the week before. Tom fell on the
stroke of drinks after a good fought innings.
They continued the fight through to tea,
which they reached only 5 wickets down.
It looked as though they might manage to
fight through, until they suffered a collapse,
losing 5 quick wickets, the last of which being
Oliver Powell who batted through 60 overs.
Due to the collapse and the defensive nature
of Bacchus Marsh’s game plan, Wallan had
just over an hour to chase down 160. Despite
some early tight bowling the hosts managed
to punish the Bacchus Marsh bowlers early
until Mark Hooper took 2 wickets in two
balls, stemming the flow momentarily until
Shaun Taylor secured the fate of a draw by
removing the off stump of Wallan danger
man Kieran Atkin. Wallan ended the day

cancelled out the first days play. The visitors
bowled first, and bowled well, limiting the

at home, batting first and posting an
insurmountable 177. Matt Bayly steered the
ship with a classy 79 not out and Darren
Fowlie joined the fun with 31. Frank
Pawlowicz (4/19 off 7) lead the charge against
and undermanned St Anthony’s batting line
up. James Ross (2/22 off 7); Henry Rudra (2/7
off 1.3); and Brett Huxtable (1/10 off 3) joined
the fun with wickets of their own. The hosts
ended up bowling St Anthony’s out 100 runs
short.

Bacchus Marsh 7/150 lost Sunbury 6/157
Bacchus Marsh travelled to Sunbury for a
tight fought contest, where they fell 7 runs
short of chasing down a hefty 157 posted
by the hosts. Young spin king Luca Kraljiik
(2/23 off 6) and Ethan McKercher (2/17 off 5)
stood resilient against a strong batting line-
up, with Steve Lalor (1/22 off 4) and Scott
Whiteway (1/30 off 7) grabbing a wicket
each. In reply Adam Arnold posted a strong
63 and Scott Whiteway chipped in with a
handy 31 as Bacchus Marsh fell agonisingly
short.
CLUB GRADE SOUTH: Bacchus Marsh 1
10/91 lost Diggers Rest 3/95
Bacchus Marsh hosted Diggers Rest in
their disappointing loss over the weekend.
Bacchus Marsh managed to only put 91 on
the board before being bowled out. Diggers
Rest chased it down in 26 overs losing 3
wickets in the process. Cam Lidgett (29) and
John Mowlam (20) contributed well with the
bat whilst captain Peter Dickson (1/11 off 7),
Luke Baselmans (1/40 off 7) and Paul Butler
(1/27 off 6) all grabbed themselves a wicket.

It is a horse race that accepts entries by votes,
and the winner is not always the horse.
By voting for your favourite horse in the All-
Star Mile, you will be in the running to win
a share in $500,000 with the first prize being
$250,000.
If chosen, you will become the owner
ambassador for the horse you voted on and
represent the horse on the raceday. This
includes flights from your capital city to
Melbourne, transfers, 5-star accommodation
plus a VIP raceday experience at The All-Star
Mile raceday hosted this year at Caulfield
Racecourse.
The Bungaree Football Club has formed a
small fundraising syndication with members
of Heart of Puissance and are hopeful their
three-year-old chestnut gelding, trained
by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who
created a big impression winning his first
two starts will make the top-ten in voting to
be eligible compete.
The 1600-metre race has been tagged as
a race “like no other”, as it boasts itself as
being the only race where you get to vote for
a horse.
Darren Rix from the Bungaree Football Club
said they have managed to get more than
3400 votes for the two-time winning horse,
‘Heart of Puissance’, but they still require at
least another 5000 votes to remain in the top
ten.
“We just want to put the word out there this
week, because voting will finish on Friday,”
he added.

horse outright, they just have a small share.
“We have 58 owners associated with the
club, who own shares in the horse through
the Bungaree Lair Syndicate.
“If it wins or places, all the owners will have
a share in the prize money” he said.
“I think you would be very lucky if you get
another chance. We are very lucky to be in
the top ten at the moment. “ he added.

Melbourne’s three premier racetracks,
Flemington, Caulfield and The Valley.
The inaugural race at Flemington in
March 2019 was won by Mystic Journey,
the flying filly from Tasmania who cost

Ballan won the toss and batted first with
arvo playing Melton in Melton. Melton
batted first and batted very well, the Ballan
kids gave it their best and could only manage
two wickets in 20 overs, Melton made 154
runs. Ballan’s best bowlers were Noah Pace 1
wicket for 6 runs off 2 overs and Angus Britt
1 wicket for 16 runs off 3 overs.
Ballan’s batting was under pressure straight
away with Melton producing 2 run outs in
the first over. Ballan continued to struggle
losing 2 more wickets in the next 2 over
leaving Ballan 4 for 8 off 5 overs. Ballan
needed some kids to stand up and that’s
exactly what they got with some tough
determined batting from Archie Connor
and Nathan Stanley. The two boys batted
together for the next 5 overs without losing
a wicket until Nathan was dismissed. That
brought Beau Shelton to the crease, with
Beau combining with Archie Connor for
another excellent partnership with both boys
batting until they had to retire. Beau came
back in later in the innings and had another

A country mile win

It was one of the more memorable Victorian
racetrack debuts in recent times and it has
Burrumbeet trainer Mick Stanley dreaming
big with exciting two-year-old Soho Lanikai.
While the horse’s 65m victory in the Allied
Express Premiere Stakes at Tabcorp Park
Melton on Saturday night was visually
stunning, the clock backed up the horse’s
dominance.
The son of Somebeachsomewhere, owned
by strong stable supporter Rob Watson,
rated a slick 1.54.0 mile rate in defeating the
previously unbeaten Ultimate Exclusive and
Im Lady Madeleine over the 1720m trip.
“We expected him to win, but at the trials
he was very green and had a good look
around and was sort of a bit dorky,” Stanley,
who gave the drive to Ryan Duffy due to
commitments at Globe Derby, said.
“Our only concern going into the race was
if he raced a bit green and had a good look
around like he did at the trials, but he didn’t
do any of that and what he did at the trials,
he benefited a lot from.
“That was great to see that improvement in
him mentally so he was able to switch-on on
race day.”
Stanley said the heats of the Bathurst Gold
Crown would likely be the next assignment
for the horse on March 20, with a hopeful
run in the Group 1 final a week later.
Soho Lanikai was purchased at the
Melbourne Australian Pacing Gold sales and
is also eligible for that upcoming series.
Another highlight on Saturday night’s card
was the brilliant return to racing from Mick
Chircop-trained General Dodge.
In his first competitive race since June 2018,
the seven-year-old proved too good in the
Hygain Pace (1720m, NR 80-99) after sitting
three-wide in the latter stages.
He rated 1.53.8 and beat a quality field
including Emma Stewart-trained place-
getters Liftntorque and Always Fast.
Chircop said it had been a long road back to
fitness for his star pacer, which has now won
12 of 16 career starts.
“He got this parasite called liver fluke and
we couldn’t get to the bottom of it,” Chircop
said.
“We kept working him up and he kept
getting crook and I was a bit worried at the
time.
“It’s more common in cattle and sheep. It’s a
snail and it attacks their liver - he was very
sick and we nearly lost him a couple of times
there.”
Chircop, who trains from Parwan, said a tilt
at the country cups circuit was among the
future plans for the son of Courage Under
Fire.
