x
L.H.L. lim− f ( x ) = lim−

Putting x = 0 − h as x → 0, h → 0

x
R.H.L. lim+ f ( x ) = lim+

Here, L.H.L. ≠ R.H.L.

Therefore, this limit does not exist at x = 1.

Therefore, this limit does not exist at x = 0.

Therefore, this limit exists at and x = 5 lim− f ( x ) = 0.
x →5

a + bx x <1

28. Given: f ( x) =  4 x = 1 and lim f ( x ) = f (1)
x →1
b − ax x >1

⇒ lim f ( x ) = lim+ f ( x ) = f (1) = 4
x →1− x →1

⇒ lim f ( x ) = 4 and lim f ( x ) = 4 ……… (i)

x →1− x →1+

Now lim f ( x ) = lim− ( a + bx )

x →1− x →1

Putting x = 1 − h as x → 1, h → 0
∴ lim  a + b (1 − h )  = lim [ a + b − bh ] = a + b ……….(ii)
h→0 h →0

Again lim f ( x ) = lim+ ( b − ax )

x →1+ x →1

Putting x = 1 + h as x → 1, h → 0
∴ lim b − a (1 + h )  = lim [b − a − ah] = b − a ……….(ii)
h→0 h →0

Putting values from eq. (ii) and (iii) in eq. (i), we get
a + b = 4 and b − a = 4
On solving these equation, we get a = 0 and b = 4
29. Given: f ( x ) = ( x − a1 )( x − a2 ) .... ( x − an )
Now lim f ( x ) = lim ( x − a1 )( x − a2 ) .... ( x − an ) = ( a1 − a1 )( a1 − a2 ) .... ( a1 − an )
x → a1 x → a1

= 0 × ( a1 − a2 ) .... ( a1 − an ) = 0
Also lim f ( x ) = lim ( x − a1 )( x − a2 ) .... ( x − an ) = ( a − a1 )( a − a2 ) .... ( a − an )
x →a x→a

30. Given: f ( x) =  0 x=0 ⇒ f ( x) =  0 x=0

 
∴ lim f ( x ) exists for all a ≠ 0.
x →0

Now L.H.L. lim− f ( x ) = lim− x + 1

x →0 x →0

Putting x = 0 − h as x → 0, h → 0
∴ lim 0 − h + 1 = lim − h + 1 = lim h + 1 = 0 + 1 = 1
h →0 h →0 h →0

Also R.H.L. lim+ f ( x ) = lim+ x − 1

x →0 x →0

Putting x = 0 + h as x → 0, h → 0
∴ lim 0 + h − 1 = lim h − 1 = lim h − 1 = 0 − 1 = −1
h →0 h →0 h →0

Here, L.H.L. ≠ R.H.L.

Therefore, this limit does not exist.
lim ( x 2 − 1) = (1) − 1 = 1 − 1 = 0

31. Since
x →1

f ( x) − 2
∴ lim =π ⇒ lim  f ( x ) − 2  = 0
x →1 x2 −1 x →1

⇒ lim f ( x ) = 2
x →1

32. Both lim f ( x ) and lim f ( x ) exist.

x →0 x →1

∴ lim f ( x ) = lim+ f ( x ) and lim f ( x ) = lim+ f ( x )

x → 0− x →0 x →1− x →1

lim f ( x ) = lim− ( mx 2 + n ) = lim  m ( 0 − h ) + n  = lim  mh 2 + n  = n

2
Now
x → 0− x→0 h →0   h →0
And lim f ( x ) = lim+ ( nx + m ) = lim  n ( 0 + h ) + m  = lim [ nh + m] = m
x → 0+ x →0 h →0 h →0

∴ lim f ( x ) = lim+ f ( x ) ⇒ n=m ……….(i)

x → 0− x →0

Therefore, for lim f ( x ) exists we need m = n.

x →0

Again lim f ( x ) = lim− ( nx + m ) = lim  n (1 − h ) + m  = lim [ n − nh + m ] = n + m

x →1− x →1 h→ 0 h →0

lim+ f ( x ) = lim+ ( nx 3 + m ) = lim  n (1 + h ) + m  = lim  n (1 + h3 + 3h 2 + 3h ) + m  = n + m

3
And
x →1 x →1 h →0   h →0
∴ lim f ( x ) = lim+ f ( x ) ⇒ n+m = n+m
x → 0− x →0

Therefore, lim f ( x ) exists for any integral value of m and n.

x →0
