CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

An education makes an individual develop personally, socially as well as economically.

Education helps us to do our daily life activities in best possible ways. Education makes us dutiful.

Education is the ultimate way to get victory over all the personal and social problems. In order to

live a better and peaceful life, we need to be educated. It transforms us completely from inside and

outside by changing our mind and personality as well as improving our confidence level. (Vijay

Kumar, 2016) It gives us a knowledge of the world around us and change it into something better.

It helps us build opinions and have point of view on things in life. Education makes us capable of

interpreting things, among other things. It is not just about the lessons in textbooks. It is about the

lesson in life. (Doumbia, 2013) It is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the

world. (Nelson Mandela).

According to the commercial, the country is 2nd to the last in the South-East Asian region

in terms of the quality of education. This is embarrassing to think that some of the best educational

institutions in the region are in the Philippines. But despite these, why is it that the Philippines is

lagging behind its neighbors? Is there something wrong with our state of education? If you ask our

students even you are going to conduct a survey, many will agree that it is really the quality of

education is to blame. Many felt that the curriculum set by the Department of Education (DepEd)

and the commission on Higher Education (CHED) is not enough to let our students to be globally

competitive.

The program will enhance the basic education system to full functionality to fulfil the basic

learning needs of students. This is in line with the agenda of President Benigno Aquino III of
having quality education as a long term solution to poverty. In 2011, the Department of Education

(DepEd) administered a shift to a fresh learning scheme – the K to 12 basic education program.

Many of people were resistant to the new education system. Despite this, the government is keen

in revolutionizing the Philippine education. K to 12 (also K-12) is an education system under the

Department of Education that aims to enhance learners’ basic skills, produce more competent

citizens, and prepare graduates for lifelong learning and employment. “K” stands for Kindergarten

and “12” refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic education (6 years of elementary education, 4

years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior high school). Grade 12 Senior High School

Students have started their work immersion related to their selected academic track or their selected

vocational course. The immersion trains students and strengthen their skill or expertise for their

work in the future. It is part of the K-12 program, which prepares students to work in companies.

The importance of work immersion must be seen as vital point of giving students a venue

to improve themselves through experiencing real stuff firsthand. This is the very highlight of the

Senior High School program. It helps students to acquire knowledge and experience that can help

them grow as professional individuals. Furthermore, this program provides opportunities to go

through the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipment and documents.

In effect, the work place becomes a development venue for us student trainee to learn more about

their chosen field and practice what we have learn from academy. Experience is considered to be

one of life’s greatest teachers. As trainees they can use it as an inspiration as they gain expertise

their respective fields.

Statement of the Problem

The general problem of this study is: This study aims to determine the impact of lived experiences

among SHS GAS students during their work immersion?

Specifically, the study sought answers to the following questions:

1. How can the work immersion improve the skills of Senior High Students?

Poblacion Pulilan, Bulacan.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This Chapter also shows and discusses the relevance of the reviewed literature, theories,

studies, and conceptual framework to the present study.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter includes the information gathered from readings of this research. The

literature provided by researchers with perspective background about the study. Work immersion

refers to the part of the Senior High School (SHS) Curriculum consisting of 80 hours of hands-on

experience or work simulation which the grades 12 students will undergo to expose them to the

actual workplace setting and to enrich their experience competencies provided by the school under

the supervision of the school head and the designated personnel of the partner meanwhile, work

immersion is somewhat similar in internship students. They have things in common like letting

students undergo and experience actual works in a particular workplace. On the other hand, they

differ in some loads and number of hours they will consume. Therefore, most of the following

studies discusses about the on-the-job training or work immersion program for (SHS) students.

Work Immersion Program was also conceptualized. Basically, it aims to expose the

students to the harsh realities of environment in a workplace. Students were assigned to different

public and private institutions depending on their strand for them to have a glimpse of actual

professional work environment. They also had the opportunity to apply their learning experiences

inside the academe and in return will help them gather meaningful experiences that will be of great

help in the near future. Getting first hand experiences is not just the aim of this Immersion. It also

aims to develop young professionals whose work ethics and values are admirable and will serve

as an epitome to future trainees like them. Work Immersion taught students the value of

punctuality, good working relations with subordinates and superiors, the importance of
information confidentiality, and professionalism inside the workplace. Students were actually

trained to have a good working relationship with their subordinates, superiors and co-trainees. The

respect for diversity is needed inside the workplace since not everyone will have the same beliefs

and principles so it is a must that students will have open minds for differences so as to avoid

conflicts and misunderstandings with their co-trainees. Trainees were also taught to follow their

superior’s orders but not at the expense of their work ethics and principles. The value of

information confidentiality is also one of the things taught to students inside the workplace. Since

there is sensitive information that they encounter while working, they were tasked to keep

everything inside the office. “What you see, what you hear, when you leave, leave it here” as others

will note.

Competency Theory.

The study focused on the possible impact of lived experience of work immersion to the

Senior High Student. According to Wood & Bandura cited in Machmud (2018) states that

perception in completing in work immersion. Moreover, self-confidence relates to their course that

undertaking in their work immersion in achieving his/her work immersion program in their

company that assign. While Bandura cited in Domenech-Betoret (2017) defined work immersion

as in his or her own ability to organize and implement action to produce the desired achievements

and results”.

The importance of work immersion must be seen as vital point of giving students a venue

to improve themselves through experiencing real stuff firsthand. This is the very highlight of the

Senior High School program. It helps students to acquire knowledge and experience that can

help them grow as professional individuals. Furthermore, this program provides opportunities to

go through the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipment and

documents
Related Studies

The reviewed studies were presented based on the content of this research. On how the

work immersion affect the Senior High Student. According to Armstrong as cited in(2013) training

is a systematic development of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by an individual to perform

work immersion program.

Knowledge and skills for doing a particular job. It is an organized procedure by which

people learn knowledge and skill for a definite purpose. The purpose of training basically is work

immersion program and present competence of employee. Training is aimed at improving the

behavior and performance of a person. The related studies reviewed revealed a person that taking

a work immersion program for (SHS) students to their company to complete their task to

improving their skills. The immersion program aims to provide relevant learning experiences to

the students by giving them first-hand exposure to the actual workplace setting. It is likewise a

venue for the student trainees to learn more about their chosen field and decide on a course that

they will pursue in college.

One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the

competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the

world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s

development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject has been incorporated into the

curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities to become familiar with the work

place for employment simulation; and to apply their competencies in areas of

specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments. To achieve the above objectives,

Work Immersion is a requirement for graduation from secondary education. Learners are

immersed in actual work environments such as workshop offices and laboratories in which their

prior training is relevant. Other possible venues for work immersion are on the teachers copy.
Conceptual Framework

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the lived experiences among SHS GAS Students

during their work immersion which serve as conceptual framework for this study. Since this study

will focus on the experience of Grade 12 Senior High School under the GAS strand, we will

examine on how students overcome the hindrances that they encountered in the new environment.

Guiding this study was the socialization theoretical framework. Socialization was defined by

Merton, Reader, & Kendall as “the processes through which a person developed a sense of

professional self, with characteristic values, attitudes, knowledge, and skills.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods and techniques to be used, population of the study, the

research instrument, collection and data gathering, the data processing and in order to achieve the

objectives of the study.

Research Design

Qualitative Research approach is appropriate for this study because the data collected and

used focuses on the participants’ subjective experiences on the process of disclosure and the way

they interpret them. Phenomenology is an approach to qualitative research that focuses on the

commonality of a lived experience within a particular group. The fundamental goal of the approach

is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular phenomenon (Creswell, 2013). Typically,

interviews are conducted with a group of individuals who have first-hand knowledge of an event,

situation or experience.

Research Location

This study was conducted at Engr. Virgilio V. Dionisio Memorial High School located

At Poblacion Pulilan province of Bulacan. The researcher chooses this location because there are

so many respondents that they can choose

Research Respondent

The respondent of this research will be the Selected (10) Grade 12 students of Eng. Virgilio

V. Dionisio Memorial High School under the General Academic Strand. The student was selected

using purposive sampling.

Methods and Techniques of the Study

This study used the descriptive method of research in order to determine the Impact of

lived experience of Senior High Student encountered during their work immersion. According to

Calderon (2014), as cited by Alberto et al (2012), descriptive method is also known as statistical

research, it describes data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studies.

This research method is used for frequencies, averages and other statistical calculations. Often the

best approach prior to writing descriptive research, is conducting a survey investigation. The

characteristics of this method were used a tool to determine on how the senior high students

overcome the hindrances that they encountered during their work immersion program. This

method is used to gather information in order to test hypothesis or to answer questions concerning

the currents status of the subject of the study Survey form of study specifically school survey was

employed with the main concern of hypothesis formulation, testing and analysis of the relationship

between independent variables and the dependent variable. To be able to gather necessary data,

unstructured interview and questionnaires were used in this study

Research Instruments

The research instrument was the questionnaire (survey). It is the most suited instrument

that will answer the problem of their research. It will be constructed by the research personally and

it will be given to the (10) selected students from Engr. Virgillo V. Dionision Memorial High

School under general Academics Strand (GAS).
