Leadership and management Are all managers leaders? Do all managers have to lead?

Managers must be leaders because their managers have tasked them with achieving tasks and
leadership is the best way to motivate and inspire the team.

Bush (2011 p 5 - 7) states that there are 3 dimensions of educational leadership. What are they?

1. influence
2. values
3. vision

If you had to rank these in order of importance, how would you do so? Discuss.

In the order shown below.

Values comes first as leadership is increasingly linked with values, the character of leaders is
expressed in terms of personal values, self-awareness and emotional and moral capability, they
are beyond measurement . To influence comes second as it is intentional and can empower
people development and accelerate results; finally, comes vision it’s an essential component of
effective leadership for more than 20 years.

How would you define

Leadership = refers to people who bend the motivations and actions of others to achieving
certain goals; it implies taking initiatives and tasks. To influence rather than authority,
linked to values and vision.

Management = managing is maintaining efficiently and effectively current organizational

arrangement, it’s function is toward maintenance rather than change.

Administration = is the study and practice of managing the resources, tasks and
communications.

Now read Bush (2011 p 8-9) and make a note:

 What does Cuban (1988) say is the purpose of leadership? (bottom of p 8)

- To influence other actions in achieving desirable ends .

- To shape the goals, motivations, and actions of others.
- Managing exhibits leadership skills.

 How does Bush (1998) distinguishes between leadership and management? (middle of p 9)

- Management: linked to systems and paper ; relates to implementations or technical issues

- leadership: links to development of people; links it to values or purpose
- Leadership is linked with change and management with maintenance.

In the UAE context, how do you think that government school principals are defined in terms of
their roles:

 by the MOE?
The Ministry of Education formulates and implements education policies on education
structure, curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment. It oversees the management and
development of Government-funded schools.

 by teachers?
Assessing and evaluating student's abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Preparing
students for standardized tests. Communicating student progress to parents. Developing
and enforcing classroom rules

 by parents?
Asses their children needs and help them in their studies and well-being.

 by students?
To know their roles and responsibilities in learning and to take strong interest in studies.
