Chapter 9 Hard Drive Technologies

Step 1 : Using your reference materials, review the features and spesifications of SATA hard
drive technology. Then answer these question:
a. What is the speed of data transfer for SATA 1.0 drives? 1.5 Gb/s
b. What is the speed of data transfer for SATA 2.0 drives? 3.0 Gb/s
c. What is the speed of data transfer for SATA 3.0 drives? 6.0 Gb/s
d. What is the speed of data transfer for SATA 3.2 (SATAe) drives? 2 Gb/s
e. What is the maximum length of SATA cable? Maximum length 1 meter (39.37 inci)
f. How many wires are in a SATA cable? 15 pin kabel power
g. How many drives can a single SATA cable support? 1-6 TB
Step 2 : It’s time to get working with some SATA drives. Shut down your system and remove
the system cover, following proper ESD avoidance procedures.
Step 3 : Disconnect the data cable (s) from SATA hard drive (s), as shown in figure 9.1.
Grasp the cable as closely as possible to the connector on the drive and pull, rocking the
connector gently from side to side.
Disconnect the power supply from SATA drive(s) by unplugging the SATA connector from
each one.
Step 4 : Now look at the motherboard connection and note the orientation of the connectors.
Disconnect the data cables from the motherboard, being careful but firm. Grasp the cable as
closely as possible to the connector on the motherboard and pull, rocking the connector
gently from side to side.
Lay the cables a side for later reinstallation
Step 5 : Look at the SATA connections on your motherboard (see figure 9.2)
How many SATA connector do you see on your motherboard? 4 SATA connector
Look closely at your motherboard, and see if you can find writing on the board next to the
SATA connectors. Are the interfaces grouped into pairs? Are any of them dedicated to special
configurations such as RAID? Yes
Step 6 : Remove the hard drive form the system, not the type of screw you removed, and
stores the screw for safekeeping. Be sure to use proper ESD procedures when removing the
drive from your system.
Because of the variety of cases, caddies, bays, slots, and so on, it’s not possible to give
detailed instructions on how to remove the drive from your particular system. Look closely
for caddy releases or retaining screws. Close inspection and a little logic will usually make it

clear how to remove the drive. Make notes of how the drive comes out; you’ll have to
reinstall it later.
Step 7 : With the hard drive out of system and on static free surface, ground yourself, pick up
the drive, and examine it carefully.
Note its dimensions; it should measure about 6” x 3.5” x 1”. The bottom of the drive contains
the hard drive controller, and the top of drives is normally labeled with the drive’s
spesifications.
Write down all the information on the label. Be sure to include the manufacturer and the
model number for future reference.
Answer : Acer hard drive HDD 2.5 320GB SATA-from the official Acer Replacement
part partner/distributor
Storage Capacity: 320GB Form Factor: 6.4cm (2.5inch)Speed: Min. 5400RPM | cache:
Min. 8MB
Leave the system case off to verify that everything is working properly and to facilities the
last steps.
Step 8 : Power up the PC and boot into Windows should start normally. If it doesn’t, turn to
Lab Exercise 9.04, “troubleshooting Hard Drive Installations.”

Lab Exercise 9.02 : Choosing External Hard Drives

Step 1 : First, let’s rate the current external hard drive interface options in term of their
maximum speed. Complete table 9-1, gathering the specs s needed from online research
and/or from Mike Meyer’CompTIA A+Guide to Managing ang Troubleshooting PCs.
Step 2 : Circle and label the photos at the top of the next page that represent the three fastest
interfaces from Step1. These are the ports you will look for on your client’s PC.
Interface Maximum Throughput/sec
eSATA 6 Gbit/s
USB 2.0 480 Mbit/s
USB 3.0 640 Mbit/s
FireWire 400 3 Gbit/s
FireWire 800 6 Gbit/s

C. Port HDMI
D. Port Freewire
E. Port RJ-45
Step 3 : You check your client’s PC, and find that he has only USB 2.0 ports on his PC. You
therefore recommended that he install a controller card with the needed port to give him
fastest performance. Which type of port will you add to his system?
Answer : USB 3.0 Type B
Step 4 : Using a site such as www.newegg.com or www.frys.com, get prices for at least two
different hard drives that use the interfaceyou chose in Step 3, and for suitable controller card.
Write your findings here.

Lab Exercise 9.03 : Comparing Solid-State Drives and Magnetic Hard Drives
Step 4 : watch the boot screens. A new screen should appear now that you have enabled
RAID in CMOS. If the screen go by too fast, press the PAUSE/BREAK key (if you have one)
to pause the screen during boot-up. To enter the RAID setup utility, press key combination
required by your motherboard, similar to the key you press to enter CMOS.
Which button must you press to enter your RAID setup utility?
Answer : Press F2 and Del
Step 5 : Once you are in the RAID setup utility, practice setting up different styles of RAID
that your motherboard support. Every configuration screen is different. As in the CMOS
setup program, each setting should have an explanation to help you figure out what to do.
Because you are using hard drives with no important data (right?), feel free to experiment.
Remove drives once you have set up a particular RAID, such as RAID 0, 1, or 5. What are
the result?
