PENTAERYTHRITOL AS A MATERIAL FOR PAINT

As quaternary alcohol, pentaerythritol is easily generated by esterification acid and ester, so most
of the classes used in alkyd resin coatings raw materials, mainly used for architectural coatings
and automotive primer. Pentaerythritol reaction with rosin acid can produce rosin pentaerythritol
ester, which can be mixed with drying oil and is a kind of coating with better hardness, water
resistance and weather resistance, can be used in ink of varnish, floor, etc. By esterification
condensation pentaerythritol or glycerol with phthalic anhydride, fatty acid can make an alkyd
resin coating. Use of different kinds and different amount of fatty acid can improve the properties
of alkyd resin, making it a suitable coating of various kinds in need. It is widely used as a coating
on the surface of the metal, wood, as a bridge, railway, derrick, building and other aspects of
commonly used industrial paint and architectural paint. Because of the price is low, alkyd resin of
reactants, easy modification, strong adaptability, good comprehensive, it has become the backbone
of the coating industry since 1927.
Pentaerythritol is often used in coating industry, is of alkyd coating raw material for the production
of highly cross-linked coating using four hydroxyls, the coating has good hardness and color, can
improve the hardness, luster and durability of the coating film. Used as varnish, paint and ink
production of rosin ester raw material, and can be used as flame retardants, drying oil, aviation
lubricating oil. Pentaerythritol fatty acid ester is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plasticizer and
stabilizer are also used in medicine, pesticide, lube oil manufacture.

USES AND APPLICATIONS OF PENTAERYTHRITOL

It is mainly used in alkyd resin production, also used for manufacturing ink, lubricants, plasticizer,
surface active agent, explosives and drugs raw materials.
Used as a resin and synthetic fiber antistatic agent, solvent conditioner, oil, etc.
Pentaerythritol is mainly used in the coating industry, is the source of alkyd resin coating, can
make the coating film hardness, gloss, with improved durability, it is used as varnish, color paint
and printing ink of pine resin needed raw materials. Pentaerythritol tetranitrate is a kind of high
explosives (taian); The fatty acid ester is an efficient lubricant and PVC plasticizer; The epoxide
production is the raw material from the raw surface active agent, pentaerythritol easy forms
authority complex with metal, also as hard water softener used in detergent formulation, in
addition, it can also be used in medicine, pesticide and other production.

MOST COMMON TYPE OF PAINT THAT USES PENTAERYTHRITOL

Pentaerythritol is used in alkyd resins, radiation cure monomers, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
stabilizers, polyurethanes, rosin esters, synthetic lubricants, pigment treatment, antioxidants, and
explosives.
Worldwide, 37% is used in alkyd paints, 14.5% in alkyd inks, 11% in alkyd adhesives/sealants,
9% in plasticizers, 8% in alkyd varnishes for floors and woodwork, 7% in radiation cure coatings,
4% in lubricants, 1.3% in explosives and 8.2% in other applications.
Many grades are offered, but the largest is mono (pure) with a minimum purity of 98%.
Alkyd polymers (resins)
Decorative gloss paints typically contain alkyd polymers (resins). They are commonly produced
by polycondensation of an alcohol (polyol), and a dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride. The principal
polybasic acids used in alkyd preparation include phthalic anhydride, isophthalic acid, maleic
anhydride, and fumaric acid, among many others. The principal types of polyols used in alkyd
synthesis are glycerol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol,
and neopentyl glycol.
One of the important attributes of alkyd resins is their good compatibility with many other coating
polymers. For example, vinyl resins, i.e., copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate which
contain hydroxyl groups can be formulated with alkyd resins to improve their application
properties and adhesion. These products are often used for making marine top-coat paints. Very
long emulsified oil-drying alkyds** are also added to synthetic latex house paints to improve
adhesion to chalky painted surfaces, whereas medium to short oil alkyd resins are sometimes
blended with silicone resins with high phenyl content for air-dried or baked coatings to improve
heat or weather resistance. Some commercially important chemical modifications of alkyd resins
include vinylated alkyds, silicone alkyds, urethane alkyds, phenolic alkyds, and polyamide alkyds.

REASONS FOR THE USE OF PENTAERYTHRITOL IN PAINT

The research and development of postwar alkyd resins was also driven by the availability of raw
materials. When the war ended in 1945, both ICI and DuPont found themselves left with plants
capable of producing large quantities of coatings and explosives, but no large-scale market to speak
of.
However, in their capacities as explosives manufacturers, both had been producing considerable
quantities of pentaerythritol, and experimentation began with using this alcohol in the place of
glycerol. Pentaerythritol has three main advantages over glycerol:
1. It has a functionality of four as opposed to glycerol’s three, which allows greater amount
of oil to be incorporated into the resin. This is not only imparts greater flexibility to the
film and improves the resin’s rheological properties but also makes it manufacture more
economical, as oil is less expensive than glycerol.
2. It lends a water resistance that is far superior to that of glycerol alkyds
3. It offers better gloss and gloss retention.
The use of pentaerythritol in place of glycerol was a significant development in the manufacture
of postwar alkyds.
