INTRODUCTION

Sometimes we all run from our classes. For some students arriving late in school.
As we observe, many students come at school late. Even they are living near the school
far away from school. Students have a lot of reasons why they go late at school, it could
be that they are tired going to school, not interested with the subjects, hanging out with
friends or just having a bad day. More common reasons of most students are waking up
late, their clothes are wet or sometimes they are just lazy going to school. However, the
student attendance policy has been developed as a role of the university’s commitment
to provide a supportive learning environment which authorized all students who have
selected to study with the university to fulfill their absolute potential. ETC’s (2009)
reported that the attendance and punctuality policy clearly states that “regular and
punctual attendance is of paramount importance in ensuring that all students have full
access to the curriculum. Valuable learning time is lost when students are absent or late.
Late arrival students are disruptive and inequitable to other class members. Instructors
are responsible to establish appropriate dealing strategies to uproot such behavior. One
of the most important aspects of the school is that it is organize, schedule and predictable.
Students depend on the structure of the day. They know where they have to be when.
They know the main purpose for being in school is to learn and that being tardy could
affect their studies. But not only does a student who is consistently arriving late to school
establish bad punctuality habits, their tardiness also disrupt the learning of other students
in their classes. The researchers found the students who are frequently late to school
often miss out on important opening announcements and academic activities. Teachers
can become frustrated as late students disrupt instruction, often requiring reteaching of
what they have missed. Tardy behavior can also negatively affect the overall classroom
environment. Tardiness causes students to feel disconnected with school, leading to
behavior problems and dropouts. Student who are frequently tardy to school are also
more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late. When students are tardy, they
negatively impact their teachers and other students. What are the primary causes of
chronic tardiness in elementary age students? Issues that frequently cause tardiness in
this age group are medical, transportation and family based issues. Medical issues
include circumstances in which the parent or child have a chronic illness that make early
mornings difficult. This study will determine the factors affecting students in their daily
routine during school days. Always and often times being tardy in the flag ceremony, in
attending classes after recess time in the morning and afternoon class sessions and
during the first period in the afternoon class session. There are observed instances that
during their transfer of room in their specialization subjects and other activities that needs
outdor activities. They are behind schedule in attending to it. There was an indication that
student had significantly disliked the subjects of Science and Mathematics and might be
the reason for leniency in their study. The aversion towards the matter is merely on the
subject and has nothing to do with the subject teacher. Moreover, there are students who
fairly rated their teacher that might affect their performance at school.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The study was conducted at Calinan National High School, Calinan Davao City.

Calinan National High School is a public school that offers a Senior High School.
As today, there are lots of students who are late from their classes. Most of the Senior
High School students in Calinan National High School got late in the morning classes
which could lead to a consequence either in their academic or others.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose of this study is to determine the reasons why students are tardy
at school.

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the causes why students got late at school?


2. What causes are common to students of being tardy at school?
SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The study is focused on the students who are always tardy at school particularly
the Grade 11 students. This study is conducted at Calinan National High School. The
research only studies the cause of tardiness of HUMSS Students.

The data will be gathered through a survey-questionnaire.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the cause of tardiness among Grade 11 Humss
students.

Students- students would be able to know what are the causes of being late.

Teacher- teachers would understand why students are not able to attend in their morning
classes.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For the specific understanding of the term used in the study, the following term is
defined operationally.

Tardiness – is the quality of being late from school.
