Why Does the Philippines Need the K-12 Education System?

Updated on September 5, 2019

Filipinos are known to be competitive in the international community. However, our current
education system hinders us from becoming even more competitive.

Starting in the 2012-2013 school year, the education system of the Philippines was enhanced
from the ten years of basic education to a 12-year program through an initiative called the K-12
Education Plan sponsored by the Department of Education.

The implementation of the K-12 plan in the Philippine Basic Education Curriculum is the key to
our nation’s development. Though the government faces many problems as it implements the
program over the course of several years, it is a necessary improvement since increasing the
quality of our education is critical to our nation's success.

See below some ways that the K-12 education plan will be beneficial for the Philippines
according to Isagani Cruz (2010) in one of his columns in a local newspaper.

Reasons for the K-12 Education System

1. Sufficient Instructional Time
With K-12 education, students will have sufficient instructional time for subject-related tasks,
making them more prepared in every subject area. With the old system, Filipino students were
consistently behind on achievement scores.

In 2008, for instance, international test results revealed that Filipinos were behind compared to
other countries when we finished dead last in math.

2. More Skilled and Competent Labor Force

Another reason to support K-12 education is because the graduates of this program will be
more prepared to enter the labor force. High school graduates of the 10-year curriculum were
not yet employable since they were not competent or well–equipped enough for the workplace.

In addition, high school graduates of the 10-year curriculum are not yet 18. With the new
curriculum, senior high school students can specialize in a field that they are good at and
interested in. As a result, upon graduation they will have the specific job-related skills they need
even without a college degree. When they graduate from high school, these young people will
be 18 and employable, adding to the nation’s manpower.

3. Recognition as Professionals Abroad

Finally, with K-12 education, Filipino graduates will be automatically recognized as professionals
abroad because we are following the international education standard as practiced by all
nations.

There will be no need to study again and spend more money in order to qualify for international
standards. With a K-12 education, Filipino professionals who aspire to work abroad will not have
a hard time getting jobs in their chosen field. Furthermore, they will be able to help their families
in the Philippines more with remittances, property purchase, and small businesses.

K-12 Education Will Help Filipinos Gain a Competitive Edge

Though Filipinos are known to be competitive in the international community, our current
education system hinders us in becoming more competitive among other countries. The K-12
education plan offers a solution to that problem.

However, it is undeniable that there will be problems that arise as we implement the program,
which could include a lack of budget, classrooms, school supplies, and teachers. That said, the
long-term effects of K-12 education will be very beneficial to us Filipinos.

Therefore, we must support the K-12 educational plan to help improve our educational system
and our economy. Remember that change in our society starts with education.

The real problems of our education is lack of rooms and teachers.if you going around to the
public school intermadaite and secondary education is very clouded emaging one classroom is
almost 60 to 70 person in one room how the students take a good quality of education and they
attend only 5hours a day.k-12 is not the solution of lack of education REDUCE the number of
person in one room.and build more school building.

Unfortunately, the problems which plague Grades 1 to 10 are also affecting Grades 11 and 12.
To make matters worse, K to 12 requires kindergarten, but several students required to take
Grade 11 didn't take kindergarten.

To follow the law, Grade 11 should be required only in 2024 because kindergarten became
mandatory only in 2013.

We dont need to debate about K-12. Im grade 11 senior high and for me K-12 is a big help. 2
years in senior high is like a traning ground for me to increase my knowledge and skills. Instead
of blaming DEPED why dont we just support them. Come to think of it they will not implement
K-12 if it is not for good.

If there has to be change in the educational system, it will be all about the change in
perspectives. It will be difficult and painful for people who are in the system for quite some time.
But to change, to create change, to pursue change, there has to be a change of heart and
perspectives.

I am just hoping too hard that people in the Department of Education and its stakeholders will
take more effort to deepen their understanding on how K to 12 can be a tool for societal change
and social relevance. That people in this department will see hope in this educational program
as to widen its effects in terms of changes personally, professionally, organizationally, and
socially. Good luck to all of us.

I think I'm favor of k-12 curriculum, just my point of view it maybe long term, but the most
important thing ,the students will enhance his/her learning more, students will be more prepared
and also they can find job easily because they graduated in high standard education. It will easy
for theme to have a job in abroad with just graduating in high school, cause they're are parents
who can't support they're child in studying college, and a students will be in their legal age to
work not like in old curriculum.

, lets give k-12 a chance how far he could go despite the criticism around him, if not then there's
another years to change it again and again at least we do it than never.....we said that abroad is
different from Filipino tradition but nw we are imitating other countries even the way of clothing
etc....so lets enjoy and accept the a little bit of transformation of our education system its not a
crime but its for the benefit of our future leaders. that a young leader can afford to touch hear
etc. using his senses the technology and new skills he wanted from the beginning of his life that
he thought he can not even touch it, at the end pwede na niya maipagmamayabang sa lahat na

Even before the implementation of this k+12 system, most of the schools here in the philippines
lack facilities. Poor classroom/teacher - student ratio. Come here in Mindanao and see for
yourself that our students don't need this kind of system, what they need is good facilities and
comfortable classrooms. More funds not more years.

I myself believe that the K to 12 implementation is very unnecessary. Why do we have to copy
the educational systems from other countries when we could just improve our own. Why not just
give more improved training to teachers from both public and private schools, give more budget
to the making of more classrooms, hold more seminars with hands on exercises for the students
in the higher years regarding different technological aspects, Make education more fun for
students rather than the old method, which in my own opinion, is kinda boring.

well then, it's already implemented by our government (depEd), if they really like to improve our

aware as it is being seen in the media's documentary shows. need to create a program wherein
all children in remote areas who wants to have better education will reach it, also to avoid child

Adding more years in basic education is I think not the best solution to improve the quality of
education in our country. The basic problem lies in the implementation. Not all teachers perform
their tasks very well, especially those in the far-flung areas. Since very seldom monitors come to
look at what they are doing or if ever these monitors come, they just make the so-called "flying
visits". Am so frustrated with that kind of attitude of some supervisors. they just go visit the
schools just to scare the teachers and leave after eating and do not even have time to look at
how the teachers prepared the lesson plans and how they execute what they have planned. we
need to change this kind of attitude among supervisors and school administrators. monitoring
and evaluation is a very weak aspect of our educational system. I hope and pray this will
change in due time.

Since K+12 Education system was already implemented by our government, I believe that
debating about whether or not to implement it is no longer rational. What we must do now is to
help our government improve the K+12 system; like what Sir Nestor L. Parafina has conveyed in
his arguments. I love his points of putting less emphasis on subjects which consume lots of
efforts and time yet still not useful to economic development. What we need now are children
with greater understanding on how to make this country great again...by putting more
advancements in economic-related subjects we can stand up once again.

senior high school, students have the chance to get a job related to their specialization or they

get jobs in abroad. Unlike before, pag high school graduate lang, mas mahirap makahanap ng

helps in the economic development of our country.

I read all the comments above... I hope I didn't miss any point. Except for the thoughts of Daniel
Desembrana and comment of Cianeko (just above my posting), all other comments failed to
focus on the link between K-12 and individual success or the nation's economic progress. No
one took a time to comment on the structure and content of both the traditional and K-12
systems of education. No one said something on whether the old and the present elementary,
high school and even college curriculum have got added values on what an induvidual needs to
be truly successful... or what are the pre-requisites for a nation to be well-off!

Let me show you my arguments. Kindergarten is a preparation for Elementary, Elementary is a

preparation for High School, and High School is a preparation for College. College is
supposedly a preparation for either getting employed or establishing one’s own business.
Nevertheless, reality is, college graduates are not prepared for almost any job! They need to be
comprehensively trained by the company he got into! What happened to the 19 years of
kindergaten-to-college head-banging study? Surprisingly, this does not happen only in the
Philippines. All countries implementing the K-12 systems including Finland which is considered
to be the best in education at the moment succumb to the same situation where fresh graduates
fall short of skills and abilities to keep up with the jobs offered to them!

I have been criticizing positively the old system and the K-12 system of education since time
immemorial because both don’t cater for what the industries and national economy need. What
the academe authorities don’t see are the things we (in the industries) normally live with. These
are the conditions I would like to raise here so people who look at one side of the coin should
realize that the coin is multi-sided… not just two… but many sides!

Now getting straight to the point, what we need to drive the progress of a country are the fast
actions of the government and heavy business activities of the private sectors. Government
needs to execute plans to build infra-structures such as bridges and roads, and other
pro-business policies. Private businesses should utilize the latest systems such as Lean &
Mean, Kaizen, Six Sigma, ISO, etc. to get high profile bottomline results. All these shall
generate high GDP for the country and thus make most of us successful! By the way, does any
school teach those information?

So what should be the role of the educational institution? The schools led by the Department of
Education should determine and implement a no-nonsense curriculum RELEVANT to economic
progress. What are the fundamental areas of knowledge the students need to be versatile on?
In a nutshell, businesses need people who are skillful in COMMUNICATION, BASIC MATH &
STATISTICS, SCIENCE, FINANCIAL & BUSINESS MANAGEMENT, and BEHAVIORAL
SCIENCE. All these subjects can be learned in just ONE YEAR….. provided irrelevant subjects
like MUSIC, HISTORY, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, etc are offered on “I-want-to-take-it” basis and
not as compulsory.

Take a look again on the subjects the students are taking from Elementary to College. You
would now realize how irrelevant many of them are… hence, a lot of time, energy, and money
are wasted along the way. In other words, our present curriculum specially the K-12 is indeed a
burden to a productive Philippines … if you view it on a macro-economic perspective.

My post is too long now… I will wait for some reactions before I get back here again. Thank you
for your time reading my insight.

I am with you Daniel Desembrana when you said that our education system should promote
"blue- collar mentality, business- mindedness and computer age skills" because these things
can really help in boosting the economy. I highly believe that the country is in great need of
entrepreneurs, most especially, who can create more business enterprises. Our schools have
already produced many managers and potential business managers. What we need in the
present times are passionate and risk- taking entrepreneurs who would cater the employment
demands of the graduates. Thank you for visiting my post.

I have the feeling that our current pre-college 10-year curriculum is really crammed and so the
need to spread subjects out over 12 years is logical. But we also need to keep accelerated
education for those kids bright enough to make it. We definitely need to give more budget to
public schools to afford competent teachers and facilities. I don't mind the private schools
because they are aleady competitive. Another thing is to promote blue collar mentality,
business-mindedness and computer age skills such as writing softwares among our youth.

K-12 is not, and will never be, the solution to the problems of the Philippines. There is such a
shortcoming when the main development programs of a country are based on globalization. It
hinders the country's internal advancement because it always seeks the approval of other
countries. In turn, the country's people are forced to abide international standards which
indirectly results in the loss of a nationalistic character. Furthermore, the implementation of K-12
will only bring more hardships to the common Filipino. The poorer graduates of this program will
more likely choose to work in blue collar jobs that fit their additional skills to help their families
instead of pursuing college thereby hurting their chances to really have a chance of a better life.
While I do believe that there is a need to revise the basic education curriculum of the
Philippines, a program which has globalization has its basis will never be efficient. Also, the
development of basic education should coincide

with the development of tertiary education in order to pose a genuine change.

that a question needs more to be research as I se it in here Philippines that universities still lack
of capabilities

cianeko profile imageAUTHOR

That question needs more research as I am not in the position to answer such. However,
according to one of my professors, it is the responsibility of every higher education institutions to
offer additional programs that are commensurate to the international standards. I go with him in
that because as I see it, most of our universities here in the Philippines still lack the capabilities
of offering subjects that are more advanced or higher than the ones in the current system. With
the general education subjects slide down to the basic education, universities can inject more
specific and advanced subjects that are related to various degrees. I believe, it is just a matter
of finding ways and we have a lot of ways in addressing such matters.

profile image
Kowtow

While the years in the basic curriculum are lengthened by 2 years, the years in college will
likewise be shortened because most of the general education subjects will already be taken up
in senior high school. Thus a 4 year AB or BS course will now be shortened to 3. Engineering
courses will now take 4 instead of the usual five years. Will our 3 year AB or BS program be
recognized in the inernational community?
