4 DOCUMENTATION ......................................................................................................... 12
The Sesam™ 2014 Release is the collection of Sesam programs as of July 2014. There are many
significant updates on several Sesam programs as compared to the previous release (May 2013).
“The continuous investments in Sesam lead to new and improved products that help our customers
become even more productive. They also get higher data quality during import from other sources. This
release is more complete for jacket analysis and pipeline design, more advanced for floater analysis and
easier for marine operations. The amount of new functionality is a proof that we invest heavily based on
listening to customer needs” says Ole Jan Nekstad, Product Director Sesam.
Your feedback is important to us and the above improvements are a result of such. We thank you for
your continuous support of Sesam. If you have any suggestions, questions or problems please send an
email to: software.support@dnvgl.com or contact one of our local offices.
In this Release Document you can read about the main new features and how to upgrade models created
in previous versions. Detailed update information for each Sesam program can be found on the
Customer Portal.
There is a new product in the Sesam Pipeline family called SimBuck. It is in full compliance with “DNV-
RP-F110, Global buckling of submarine pipelines” and covers both exposed and buried pipelines.
SimBuck is intended for use in the early phases of offshore pipeline projects and is validated through
analytical methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
Two other significant improvements during the last year are easy wind load generation on equipment
and walls as well as partial meshing that will speed up mesh generation of surface models.
Wind loads on equipment and walls can now be Partial meshing has been introduced, allowing
defined and combined with e.g. wave loads the user to re-mesh only selected parts
Sesam has been a modular system since the first release in 1969. This has proven to be a success since
our customers can pick the functionality they need. The modularity also eases replacing outdated
program modules with new and modern software, again to the benefit of our customers. To ease the
understanding of the Sesam offerings we have made some packages. These are described in the
following and include the highlights for this release. More details may also be found in Section 5.
Import and translation of “old” Sesam Manager 5.3 version input files (of type jnl). The input
files are converted to workflows in Sesam Manager. This benefits users having old analysis
workflows and those who want to migrate older re-analysis systems.
Include attachments like documents and drawings. This allows you to have all information
pertaining to an analysis job stored with the job.
Easy access to all Sesam user documentation. There is no longer a need to find the user manuals
manually.
The main benefits of the most recent GeniE (version 6.8) may be listed as:
Partial meshing allowing for re-meshing of refined part while keeping the rest. Partial meshing
allows the user to re-mesh only the parts of interest while keeping the remaining finite element
mesh (including element and node numbers). The transition zone from fine to coarse mesh can
be inside or outside the refined part. The obvious benefit of this new functionality is much
quicker re-meshing as compared to previous versions where the whole model had to be re-
meshed. Furthermore, partial meshing helps in obtaining proper mesh quality for the critical
parts. Please note that this is the first release of partial meshing and the functionality has
limitations as described in Section 5.
The finite element mesh is now part of data storage together with the XML file. It is now possible
to save both the concept model and the finite element model to a GNX file which is an extension
of the XML file. The GNX file supports multiple analysis representations. The benefit is that you
can create a new workspace with identical concept model and finite element model. This is
valuable when you want to share your model with someone else or when you upgrade to a newer
version of GeniE.
Importing a finite element model (FEM file) with curved surfaces now creates a concept model
with curved surfaces. The import of FEM files has been significantly improved as it now creates a
concept curved surface based on the finite element mesh. You will also experience that it is
much faster than the previous FEM importer and that it supports the import of larger models
than before. The present version of the new importer focuses on floaters (surfaces and
stiffeners) excluding load data. This first version of the FEM importer has been developed to
support the import from CAD or other CAE systems via the FEM format.
Equipment loads (including wind and pressure on equipment walls) can now be computed as
joint (point) loads. Previously, acceleration (gravity) and pressure (wind or user defined) loads
for equipment only produced line loads. The new GeniE version offers point load representation
(on designated joints) as an alternative to line loads.
Transfer of pressure and line loads to the same super-element. In HydroD 4.7/Wadam 9.1 only
the beams are filtered out and used if a super-element is imported as a Morison model. This
means that a large model can be used without violating the element limitation in the Morison
model. The loads computed by HydroD (both pressures on plates and line loads on beams) may
then also be transferred to this model. For Wasim this functionality was already in place so now
it is available for both solvers.
The latest release allows you to perform parallel processing of code checking and fatigue calculations
provided that you have multiple cores on your PC.
There are updated versions of FatFree, StableLines and “DNV OSF-F101”. In addition we have released a
new program called SimBuck. SimBuck documents compliance with “DNV-RP-F110, Global buckling of
submarine pipelines”.
A new Workflow function is available in the new release of Sesam Marine, which is a powerful graphical
tool for flexible combination of any set of Sima tasks.
With the new release you can execute the analyses in “the cloud”, convert Bladed result files to Sesam
format and use them as input for fatigue calculation. Please contact us if you want to use the cloud
solution.
- You need your own user id and password to log in to the Customer Portal. If you don’t have an
account enter your email address for us to validate you as a user and we will email you login
data.
- For some of the Sesam programs there are two installation kits – one for 32 bit and one for 64
bit operating systems. The installation program detects whether your PC has a 32 or 64 bit
operation system and installs the right version. If you use the default destination folders the 32
bit programs will be installed in C:\Program files (x86)\DNVS and the 64 bit programs in
C:\Program files\DNVS.
- After installation and prior to using the new versions start the Application Version Manager
(AVM) to ensure that the correct versions of the different applications are set as default.
- Following this release all programs will be installed on C:\Program Files (x86)\DNVGL and
C:\Program Files\DNVGL. The new AVM (part of this release) will also detect programs installed
on these folders. It is therefore recommended that you install AVM version 3.1-01.
- This is the last release supporting Win XP and future versions of Sesam will support Win 7 and
Win 8.1. See Chapter 7.1 for more details.
- Other useful information may be found in the Installation Guideline.
The Sesam Manager database is compatible with previous versions. It is also possible to import data
from previous version using js (script), xml or zip files. The js and xml files recreate the workflow while
the zip file also contains input and result files of the programs included in the workflow.
Before you upgrade, please make sure you have relevant data i.e. js files or xml files to be used when
regenerating your models in the new GeniE version.
There are four alternatives for migrating data from a previous version of GeniE. For a full description of
data transfer capabilities and limitations please consult Section 9 in Volume III of the GeniE User
Manual. You can download the user manual from the Customer Portal before installing the programs.
- The first alternative is using the js journal file – make sure that it runs safely (File -> Read
Command File) in the previous GeniE version before importing it into the new version. The
journal file is complete and may contain analysis runs, code checks and report generations. It
will also contain changes and deletions of model data, in short everything you did in the course
of your work.
- The second alternative is using the condensed js file (the so-called clean js file). This file is more
or less complete for jackets and topsides where there are no curved structures. The environment
and analysis set-up is included but note that code check data is not part of the clean js file. From
version 6.6 and onwards the clean js file includes curved guide curves, curved beams and curved
support curves.
- The third option is by use of the XML import and export feature. The XML file contains a neutral
definition of the workspace – it is complete except for code check details and reporting. If you
are upgrading from GeniE 6.3 or later the xml file includes code checking of beams. The
functionality is available from File -> Export -> XML Concept Model and File -> Import -> XML
Concept Model.
- The final option is by use of the new GNX import and export feature. This option can be used
when migrating data from the 6.8-14 version to later versions of GeniE or when transferring data
to new workspaces using this version of GeniE. The GNX zip file contains XML and FEM files. If
you have multiple analyses all FEM files will be part of the data storage.
You can use your existing license file to run the new version of GeniE. Please note that there are features
(code checking of beams or plates, modelling of curved structure and partial meshing) that require a
license key in addition to the one for the basic program version.
For the execution of plate code check according to CSR-Tank you must install the Rule Service 15.20.53.
This component is part of the Sesam GeniE package on the Sesam 2014 Release but not part of the
standalone GeniE installation. The GeniE license for code check of plated structure (CCPL) is required.
For use of PULS Excel and PULS Advanced viewer for refined plate code checking installation of Nauticus
Hull is required. This requires a separate installation and separate license keys.
For the programs Wajac, Sestra, Splice, Installjac, Framework, Platework, Submod, Usfos, Cutres,
Stofat, Presel and Xtract the update information is found on the Customer Portal. If you want to convert
soil data from Sesam GeniE to Usfos you should install the utility tool soil.exe from www.usfos.com.
Before you upgrade make sure you have copies of HydroD journal files (js files) to be used when
regenerating your models in the new HydroD version. Importing the data to a new version will be more
efficient if you use the feature to export a so-called clean js file. HydroD can also import old Prewad
input files in case you have not used HydroD before. Older versions of Wasim (Wasim Manager) did not
have scripting which means that if you want to re-run old Wasim models you must first convert them
manually to the new HydroD user interface.
For the programs Wadam, Wasim, Waveship and Postresp, the update information is found on the
Customer Portal.
Wadam, Wasim and Waveship are not using database technologies. Previous input data can be used as
is to regenerate the data. Postresp has a database, and Postresp 6.4 will read a database created by
Postresp 6.3. It will also read jnl-files created for Postresp 6.3.
Before you upgrade make sure you have relevant js files to be used when regenerating your models in
the new DeepC version.
For DeepC you can import the journal file (js file) created from your modelling sessions. Alternatively,
you can export a condensed js file (the so-called clean js file) and import this into the new program
version. These actions are available from File -> Save Clean JS and File -> Read Journal File. The data
transfer is complete, but you need to re-run your analyses.
For the programs Simo and Riflex, the update information is found on the Customer Portal.
The Sesam Pipeline contains FatFree, StableLines, PET (Pipeline Engineering Tool), “DNV OS-F101 Code
compliance” and SimBuck.
The license files for these programs are the same as before.
The Sesam Marine contains Sima. Sima will read the input files for Simo and Riflex. Sima will
automatically convert the database from previous version to the latest version.
The license file for Sima is the same as before.
For the programs Simo and Riflex, the update information is found on the Customer Portal.
None of the other programs are using database technologies rather they use input files in form of “*.jnl”
or “*.inp” files. This means that previous input data can be used to regenerate the data.
As an example, the figure below shows how to find the user documentation for Xtract which is located in
C:\Program Files\DNVS\Xtract v4.2-08, in this case a 64 bit installation. On a 32 bit PC the path would
be C:\Program Files (x86)\DNVS\Xtract v4.2-08.
The user documentation can be accessed from (normally through the Help menu) Sesam Manager,
GeniE, HydroD, DeepC, Xtract and Sima.
And here shown how to find user documentation of Sestra from Sesam Manager:
The Sesam 2014 Release is a collection of the most recent Sesam programs. For some of them there have
been several releases since the previous Sesam 2013 Release.

Partial meshing
By using the new feature “partial meshing” you can:
re-mesh only the parts of interest and keep the rest of the finite
element mesh (including the numbering system)
control whether the transition zone between existing and new mesh
shall be on the inside of the selected part or on the outside
o The upper picture shows that the mesh transition is inside the
refined mesh part
o The lower picture illustrates the other option where the mesh
transition is outside of the refined mesh
The new feature is described in detail in the “Guidelines for Partial Meshing” and the new tutorial “A11
Partial Meshing”. Both documents are found on GeniE Help.
In many cases “partial meshing” will work fine and we encourage you
to test out the new meshing in GeniE. We are currently working to
remove the limitations and you can expect fewer limitations already
in next version of GeniE. In the meantime we would like to hear from
you if you have recommendations on improvement if you test out the
new functionality.
Please note that you need the GeniE extension for curved modelling “CGEO” to activate partial meshing.
The new functionality “plate edge offset” creates guide curves on surface based on scaling of the edges
of the surface. This is a highly useful feature for detailed control of the mesh.
After selecting the surface you need to specify the offset value. A
positive value means creating offset curves outside the surface while a
negative value will give offset curves inside the surface.
The pictures below show some examples (using negative offsets) where multiple guide curves have been
made using the new feature. Relevant curves can be made to feature edges to control the finite element
mesh.
The first release of partial meshing has limitations. They are also described in the Guideline for Partial
Meshing. There is ongoing work to resolve the limitations for later releases of GeniE.
The partial mesher does not support piles, inner beams, point-point connections and shim
connections. Adding such items to the current mesh subset will trigger remesh with the old
mesher, and the analysis cannot be exported with “Mesh on XML”
o The first release of partial meshing is intended for surface models and not jacket models
Geometric decomposition is currently not implemented. This limits the geometries supported by
the new mesher. In particular, partially split faces will not be meshed, and some skinning
surfaces are not supported. More generally, the parameter space of the faces sent to the mesher
must not be self-intersecting
Elimination of short edges is not supported. The user must take care to avoid such edges in the
model, otherwise the mesh may get missing elements
Point moments at arbitrary positions on a beam are not supported by the partial mesher
Support curves on beam ends, not on a beam or plate edge, are not supported
Mesh locking of the boundaries of a face is not supported as a user command, but is the default
setting in partial meshing (see Chapter 2)
Partial regeneration of loads has not been optimized for partial meshing, thus we recommend
applying loads to a finalized mesh
Turning the option “Include unused properties” ON or OFF does not trigger partial update of
mesh
The new feature for storing and retrieving the finite element models together with model data will allow
you to recreate exactly the same concept model and finite element model(s) in a new workspace. This is
of importance when you share the data or when you upgrade to a newer version of GeniE.
When there are several analyses in your workspace the different finite element models are stored and
linked to their relevant analysis. This means that after importing the GNX file all you need to do is to run
the analyses (without meshing) to recreate identical results.
The GNX feature has limitations and it cannot be used on frame structures including pile/soil,
overlapping members and point-point connections (typically jackets).
To save and import the GNX file use File->Export->Workspace (GNX) or File->Import Workspace (GNX).
FEM files created by other systems or older Sesam programs can now be imported such that a concept
model is created while keeping the mesh also for models with curved surfaces. Loads and boundary
conditions can be added by referring to the concept model and subsequent analysis can be carried out.
The previous FEM import is still the default in GeniE. To use the
new FEM importer (“the Domain Importer”) use File->Import-
>FEM and activate the “Use Domain Importer” as shown below.
The main difference between “old” and “new” FEM importer is the creation of curved surface after
import:
A sphere with 8 surfaces Import of the FEM file based on Import of the FEM file based on
with FEM model exported old importer. Number of surfaces new domain importer. 8 surfaces
for use in examples to equals number of finite elements are created and mesh identical to
the right making load application difficult the base model. Load application
can easily be done
Multiple stiffeners can now be inserted by one command on flat plates (like deck and bulkhead) as well
as on curved surfaces (typically side shell or bottom shell).
Previous versions of GeniE always computed line loads to beams connected to equipment. Per default all
beams connected will receive loads, but the user can control which beam by using a load interface. There
will be a balance between the equipment force acting and the computed line loads on the beams.
By including joints (as defined by Structure->Joint) in a load interface only point loads will be computed
and added to the joints part of the load interface. The load distribution will be evenly distributed to the
joints even if the joint(s) are outside the footprint of the equipment. This means that there can be an
unbalance between the acting and reacting load. Notice that a load interface that includes both joints
and beams will lead to point loads applied to the joints only.
A new card CDFN for drag/inertia coefficients as a function of diameter for fouled and non-fouled
members
These are shown as numeric values for the zero dimension spring-
to-ground element:
Previously the ISO 19902 joint check used the chord yield stress as fy without checking if 80% of tensile
strength is less. Such additional check has now been added.
Usfos has now a restriction check on shell element angles. Extreme small element corner angles are
checked for. If the angle is less than 10°, Usfos will report this as an illegal angle and stop with an error
message. The user may bypass this check by specifying a minimum angle.
Element results are changing during an analysis. For example the plastic utilization will change during an
earthquake simulation. This new option makes it possible to create one “all-time-high” presentation up
to the actual load level. For example: If the last stored load step in the analysis is selected, the “all-
time-high” for the entire analysis is displayed.
The local Z-axis of beam elements is visualized using “Global Vector/Verify/Local Z-Axis”. The arrow-
length is automatically set relative to the model size, and the length could be changed using the
“Verify/Vector Settings” menu. Clipping and display parts on/off could be used to zoom into actual
element(s).
Heavy items are normally modelled using one or more NodeMass definitions. Node masses have been
possible to visualize in Xact for several years, (blue bars, and the lengths reflect the relative magnitude).
However, in order to improve the information from an analysis, some new equipment mass definitions
are introduced (see user’s manual). In the Usfos analysis, the masses from these 1- 2-and 4-node mass-
elements are applied as usual node-masses, but in Xact, the items are visualized as shown below (two
1-node masses and one 4-noded mass).
NORSOK Revision 3
The "Update compartment points" option should be available for both the new and old method
Support symmetrical hull with unsymmetrical tanks also when including dynamics of internal
fluid
New dialogs for definition of wave elevation points and relative motion points
Only the active nodes and elements in Morison model are taken into account. This makes it possible to
import global structural models as Morison model and also apply both pressure and Morison loads on such
models (Composite load transfer to single super-element).
Symmetry for internal tanks can be different from the external hull. In practice this means that symmetry
for the external hull can be applied also with internal fluid dynamics.
Output acceleration points, zero-level reference points and load case numbers for each tank in
Wasim_Stru .LIS file.
When response spectra are deleted the numbers can be reused. This makes it possible to analyse more
than 2000 responses in one session even though there can be no more than 2000 spectra at any time.
The limitation of 300 evaluation points on multi-mode calculations has been removed.
Numerical integration routines are improved, increasing the numerical accuracy of the
calculations.
Include a missing correction factor, related to cross-flow vibration, on force model. This is
expected to change results, please refer to Verification Document.
Added mass coefficient due to cross-flow response is now calculated without safety factor on
reduced velocity, as intended in the RP. This is expected to change results, please refer to
Verification Document.
New report sheet layout - more in line with DNV-OS-F101 Code Compliant Spreadsheet and
FATFREE report sheets.
Parametric runs sheet is updated with an additional button, to update sheet independent of the
calculation process.
"Read Me" text updated to explain the use of "values" and "references." Also updated to explain
the use of different units of length and pressure in "Main" sheet. Table for revision overview
removed.
Code updated so all "buttons" and comboboxes are locked in correct position.
Code updated so burst calculations are correct considering water depth and minimum elevation.
Workflow
Workflow in Sima is a powerful graphical tool for flexible combination of any set of Sima tasks.
With workflow, the users have the possibility to share variables between various conditions and/or post
processors. This is useful when running the same environment in Simo and Riflex, the significant wave
height can then be a variable in both Simo and Riflex and be controlled by a workflow.
Workflows can be nested, making complex analyses easy to set up and run with a single play button.
Using workflow also allows the user to interact with external programs without having to leave the Sima
interface. This is an efficient way of invoking for instance external post processing functionality.
Added "Second order wave with integration of wave forces to wave surface" option to wave kinematics in
Riflex dynamic calculation parameters for Riflex 4.2.
Sima can now convert a Simo catenary system to a new Riflex Slender system.
We have added new help functionality called tutorials in the help menu. A tutorial is an interactive
example that guides the user through each step from start to end.
A new control reference option for the DP system in Simo has been added. Using the "Global Circle"
option one can define a circular perimeter to position the vessel onto. Typical applications include ship-
to-ship tanking operations.
The new thruster model has two main additional features compared to the "old" one:
- Dynamics of the thruster has been improved, including a simple servo-motor model
The new DP model has one main additional feature compared to the "old" one: the thruster data used by
the DP system has to be given separately from the physical thruster data. The DP model can now be
provided with “wrong” or inaccurate information if one wants to do error analysis or check robustness.
Further, the DP system does not have to use all thrusters, but only those assigned to it.
In the new version it is possible to account for non-linear stiffness due to the variation in vessel
geometry above and below the still-water plane. The basic first order wave forces and wave-drift forces
are computed as before using transfer functions and wave-drift coefficients. Then the non-linear
correction is obtained by integrating pressure forces on the instantaneously additional wet/-dry surface.
A new feature – Generic External Control System – has been added to enable Simo simulations with user
developed control systems. Currently the system supports controlling Simo winches.
Geotechnical model
New modelling features have been added to model transverse contact between a vertical pipe and the
soil. The new INPMOD data group GEO SPRING SPECIFICATIONS is used to give the input to the model.
Extend the generalized Morison's equation by optionally scaling the term associated with the Froude-
Kriloff load. This to enhance the area of application of Morison's equation, i.e. allow for larger structural
diameter versus wave length. Note that only loads normal to the principal axis of an element are scaled.
2nd order wave kinematics for long-crested waves have been added to Riflex. 2nd order wave kinematics
are obtained by setting the DYNMOD input parameter ICOSIM to 5.
The specified control interval for internal wind turbine control system has been activated. In addition the
values of the integrator gain are kept within saturation limit. The reason for this implementation is to
improve the behaviour of the internal control system.
Use converted result files from Bladed as input for fatigue calculation
Fatigue Start end Stop time can be set separately for each wave/wind combination.
Added “open framework results” in the right-click menu for the result-grid opens Framework.
User can chose to delete intermediate files during analysis to save disk space. Menu option for
this.
In addition to the new features a number of reported program bugs have been corrected. These are
documented in the release note of each Sesam program. For more details see the Customer Portal. Simply
select a program module and select the Update category. The example below shows how to find the
update information of HydroD version 4.7-01.
Windows XP, 32 and 64 bit operating systems; Service Pack 3 is required for XP 32bit.
Windows 7, 32 and 64 bit operating systems
Windows 8.1, 64 bit operating systems. Notice that the programs marked with “Non-maintained”
in Chapter 8 have not been tested on Windows 8.1
We strongly recommend the use of computers that support and have installed 64 bit versions of the
windows operative systems.
Following the end of official support by Microsoft, all future versions of Sesam, Nauticus Hull and
Nauticus Machinery will not support XP after 1st October 2014.
Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are primarily based on 64bit technology. This means that all new releases
of Sesam, Nauticus Hull and Nauticus Machinery will support Win7 and Win 8 on 64bit platforms after 1st
October 2014.
We acknowledge that this change will potentially be significant for some of our customers. Please contact
us on software.support@dnvgl.com if you have questions or comments.
This configuration is typical for tasks normally limited to beam jacket and topside design analyses
including wave and pile/soil analysis. The configuration is also applicable when making super-elements
built up of shell and beams. Furthermore, hydrostatic and smaller hydrodynamic analysis (frequency
domain) can also be carried out.
Graphic card: Open GL compatible. May be integrated with processor (e.g. Intel HD). If not
OpenGL support, use DX9 as provided in the Sesam installation
Memory: 2 GB
This configuration should be used for all other tasks than mentioned above.
Graphic card: Separate OpenGL compatible graphics card (NVIDIA or ATI) with 512MB graphics
memory. If not OpenGL support, use DX9 as provided in the Sesam installation
Memory: 4 GB
Terminology
This documentation refers to “graphics drivers” and “GeniE graphics drivers”.
The graphics driver is the system level software provided by your Graphics Card supplier (most likely
Intel, NVIDIA or ATI) to interface between Windows and the GPU. This is supplied with your operating
system or graphics card.
The GeniE graphics driver is the software used by GeniE to interface with the graphics driver defined
above and is supplied with GeniE.
Use of DX9
DirectX 9.0 (DX9) is the preferred GeniE graphics driver and it is the default on installation.
DirectX 9.0c Runtime version 9.27.1734 distributed on June 2010 or a later version of DirectX 9 must be
installed on your system. The Sesam installer will install DirectX 9.0c.
Note that although Windows 7 and 8 come with DirectX pre-installed, GeniE uses extra components and
so DirectX must be explicitly installed using the Sesam installer or from the Microsoft website.
The GeniE DX9 driver is supported on any DirectX 9.0 compliant graphics hardware (Microsoft Shader
Model 3) with the latest vendor-supplied drivers.
DirectX 9.0c was first released in August 2004 so older systems will not support the DX9 driver.
Use of OpenGL
GeniE supports two different OpenGL drivers. The standard GeniE OpenGL driver (“OpenGL”) is a legacy
driver that attempts to support all OpenGL 1.1 hardware.
The GeniE OpenGL2 driver (“OpenGL2”) is a shader-based driver that is offered as an alternative should
a user encounter problems with other drivers. It attempts to support all OpenGL 2.0+ hardware.
