Sato Shintaro - The Origin Of Tokyo

Seigensha Art Publishing 2019 ISBN 9784861527227 Acqn 29919
Pb 30x28cm 72pp col ills £47.75

After starting out as a news photographer, Shintaro Sato has worked as a freelance photographer
since 2002. His work is themed around the distinctive atmosphere (the "soul") of Tokyo.
Geological features influence the way cities are designed, and the combination of human
activities, the history of the land itself, and the history of the city that grows upon it eventually
generates this atmosphere. With its stunning urban scenes and panoramas photographed from
high viewpoints, always at dusk or night, this book is a supplement to Sato's earlier publication
'Tokyo Twilight Zone' (2008), a collection of photographs capturing scenes of Tokyo from
emergency staircases.

Art And Theory Publishing 2019 ISBN 9789188031808 Acqn 29927
Hb 21x34cm 144pp col ills £42

Swedish photographer Claudia Kent captures intimate images that challenge norms surrounding
bodies and sexualities while also exploring identity, nudity, gender, and intimacy. 'It's Just Sex'
honours all those who have sought and continue to seek greater appreciation and respect for the
rich diversity of human sexuality. It is the result of a documentary project conducted between
2013 and 2018 in Germany, Sweden, Australia, and the United States, and comprises portraits of
people who fall under the broad category of "queer", be it through self-identification or because
they simply find that they challenge norms relating to gender and sexuality. A reflection on our
shared humanity.

Takuma Nakahira – Overflow

Case Publishing 2019 ISBN 9784908526190 Acqn 29933
Pb 26x37cm 64pp col ills £44

Takuma Nakahira's series 'Overflow' was originally presented as an installation during the 1974
exhibition 'Fifteen Photographers Today' (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo). The work
consisted of 48 colour photographs that were arranged on a wall 6 meters wide and 1.6 meters
high. The book is the first chance to view Nakahira's astonishing series outside the context of an
exhibition. The photographs show elements of a city - eery rifts in a space overflowing with
objects, commodities and information - that Nakahira encountered and captured in his everyday
life, from ivy creeping across walls and manhole covers in the streets to the tire of a large truck,
from a pale-bellied shark floating in the transparent darkness behind the glass of an aquarium to
close-up shots of a subway station.

Nicola Nunziata – Album

Fw 2019 ISBN 9789490119782 Acqn 29999
Hb 17x24cm 192pp col ills £37.50

For this new project, the Italian photographer Nicola Nunziata returned to his personal research
topics about the materiality of photographs and the photographic objecthood. During a residency
fellowship from 2017 to 2018 at the ICCD in Rome, one of the largest public institutes for
photography conservation in Italy, he focused on 20th-century photographic albums, categorising
the archive in topics related to the object and subject of the medium. In close collaboration with
designer Hans Gremmen, Nunziata has made 'Album' into a layered, kaleidoscopic book in which
the reader becomes lost while travelling through the wonders of photography.

Stephanie Roland - Event Horizon

Eriskay Connection 2019 ISBN 9789492051455 Acqn 30004
Pb 22x30cm 96pp col ills £33.75

'Event Horizon' is a constructed fictional narrative that immerses the reader in a nocturnal and
mysterious atmosphere of anticipation. Belgian photographer Stephanie Roland depicts childhood
from an unusual perspective, capturing the gravity and mysteries that this period of life also
involves, not just the carefree world usually associated with children. The series shows the
children as well as their "mental images", visions of the future, disturbing memories, and strange
dreams from the subconscious. With a taste for the suspenseful, Roland creates a somewhat
menacing cosmos, a singular world where both utopian and dystopian perspectives become a
field for experimentation.

Lucas Leffler - Silver Creek

Eriskay Connection 2019 ISBN 9789492051448 Acqn 30006
Pb 20x29cm 32pp col ills £22.50

In the 1920s a Belgian factory accidentally disposed of tons of silver as a by-product of producing
photographic film. This ended up in a nearby creek, colouring the mud black. In 1927 a tool
maker realised the kind of fortune being washed away daily, and invented a system to recover the
sludge from the creek and extract the silver. The story, perhaps a myth, fascinated Lucas Leffler.
'Silver Creek' is the result of his research project. He scoured archives, newspaper clippings, and
other documents, and photographed the factory and the creek. He also took samples from the
creek, trying to find traces of silver, and even turned the sludge into artworks using a screen-
printing technique.

Andrei Krasilin – Sanatorium

Dostoevsky Photography Society 2019 ISBN 9789493069008 Acqn 30012
Hb 18x23cm 128pp col ills £46

'Sanatorium' centres on a researcher who finds himself at a conference in the half-empty Anapa
Sanatorium on Russia's Black Sea coast during the off-season. He sets off in pursuit of an
understanding of the place that humans and matter occupy. With its unique concept and binding,
this photobook intersperses photographs of deserted beaches with images of matter as seen
through electron microscopes. It consists of overlapping white and black pages, visually clear
depictions, and inscrutable abstractions, making the viewer both an accomplice in the
researcher's quest and a co-author of the resulting compositions.

M.H. Froslev - Unsettled City

Disko Bay 2019 ISBN 9788797052013 Acqn 30015
Hb 21x28cm 128pp col ills £59.50

Unsettled City is a dark photographic essay on the encounter between a human and a restless
metropolis. A personal depiction of a claustrophobic environment with the cityscape as
framework, captured in the cities of Saint Petersburg and Moscow over the last ten years. Here
we meet bulldogs, street fights and abandoned roads alongside loving glances, intimate moments
and faded buildings, all quietly standing still, waiting for the night to die down and the light to rise
again. Through disquieting atmospheres and raw sensitivity Unsettled City shows us how the
people of the night alternately love and fear both the city and each other. With this book M.H.
Froslev portrays feelings of alienation, inequality and pain on a par with love, intimacy and
fascination.

Inuuteq Storch – Flesh

Disko Bay 2019 ISBN 9788797052020 Acqn 30016
Hb 21x28cm 128pp col ills £49.50

Flesh is a both fun and heart-throbbing book about trying to be two places at once. One with the
body, another with the mind. Young photographer Inuuteq Storch based this series on a formative
time of his life, when he lived in New York. Through 72 full-colour pictures, captured with his little
sister's pink plastic analogue camera, the reader is taken on a journey of lurking fortune tellers,
mysterious cats and freaky red bar toilets. In each picture lies a fascination with the city's facade,
but behind it there's a longing for the nature that Storch has grown up in. Inuuteq Storch (b. 1989)
grew up in Greenland in the 1990s. His photographic work involves studies of his own nationality
and cultural heritage.

Andre Kertesz - The Art Of Poise

Jeu De Paume 2019 ISBN 9782915704877 Acqn 30046
Pb 22x31cm 48pp col ills £11.25

One of the twentieth century's great photographers, Andre Kertesz (Budapest, 1894-New York,
1985) left a prolific body of work spanning more than seventy years, from his earliest Hungarian
photographs to the blossoming of his talent in France, and from his New York years to
international recognition. The album published in conjunction with the exhibition organised by the
Jeu de Paume and the Chateau de Tours surveys his extraordinary career through around forty
images, whose compositions are marked by Europe's avant-garde art movements, forming a
visual narrative of interwar Europe and almost fifty years spent in the United States.

Colette Pourroy - Red Was Her Colour

Andre Frere Editions 2019 ISBN 9791092265842 Acqn 30066
Hb 17x22cm 64pp ills £25.75

Photographer Colette Pourroy's visual universe is fuelled by very personal emotions. A portrait of
a young woman and the staged appearances of her counterpart reinforce the sensuality, strength,
and femininity of the protagonist of this story about a mother who loved the colour red. Her
daughter has chosen to translate this into black and white. From the outset, the tone alludes to a
love story overshadowed by a dark omen. Lightness of emotion is muted by the appearance of
closed doors and closed bodies. Her inner journey overturns memories and breaks taboos, but
also repairs. As it progresses, her singular and haunting approach succeeds in making the
invisible visible.

Paul Knight - Jump Into Bed With Me

Perimeter Editions 2019 ISBN 9780987637154 Acqn 30288
Pb 14x18cm 88pp col ills £27

The seemingly conflicting qualities of intimacy and distance come to define the work of
Australian-born, Berlin-based photographer and artist Paul Knight. Part of a wider, ongoing
project documenting the day-to-day life Knight has shared with his partner Peter over the course
of their relationship, his first book considers intimacy as a conceptual proposition. To frame it, he
simply positions his 35mm camera and sets a timer. Paired with a transcript of the couple's
history of text messages to one another, the book is at once missive to a lover and an ode to
photography's intrinsic processes. The camera, when left to its own devices, can capture
wonderful and beautiful things.

Rodrigo Gomez Rovira - Ultimo Sur

Xavier Barral 2019 ISBN 9782365112093 Acqn 30218
Hb 21x28cm 144pp 90ills £40
Text in French

Ultimo Sur takes the reader on a journey to the end of the world combining Rodrigo Gomez
Rovira's photographs with the ones of his grandfather, who moved to Tierra del Fuego in 1938
after Chile's great land reforms. Nearly forty years later, the next generation fled to France to
escape the dictatorship. In the mid-1990s, Rodrigo Gomez Rovira decided to return to Chile in
search of his roots and family history. Ultimo Sur is a hybrid book, bringing together a family
album created by his grandfather and the author's own photographs of the vast region of Tierra
del Fuego, a magnificent and isolated land, letting the imagination run wild. It reveals an arduous
agricultural world in which farmers led difficult lives. Portraits that bear witness to a forgotten time
are slipped between scenes of daily life and the wild imposing landscapes between the
mountains and the sea.

Paris Colours - Gerard Ifert Ektachromes 1953-1954

Editions B42 2019 ISBN 9782490077236 Acqn 30196
Hb 21x21cm 104pp col ills £28.75

It is no wonder that colourmen's shopfronts in 1950s Paris caught Gerard Ifert's eye. The young
Swiss designer was drawn to this anonymous street art, and he would capture these geometrical
and colourful compositions during long walks through the city with his camera in hand. He
considered them vernacular equivalents of Swiss Concrete painting. This book presents a
surprising series of Ifert's photographs, vividly bringing the art form to life. In addition, it tells of a
designer at the outset of his career, who questions relationships between art and design by
examining the transformation of urban landscapes and appreciating the aesthetics of everyday
life.

Trigger Impact
Fw 2019 ISBN 9789490119829 Acqn 30148
Pb 24x32cm 96pp col ills £16.95

'Trigger' is a new platform launched by Fotomuseum Antwerpen for research, reflection, and
dialogue on all things photographic. This first publication on "Impact" is made in close
collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KABK), The Hague, and guest editor Donald
Weber. It aims to cast impact as a re-enactment or assertion of radical intimacy, initiate a different
gaze on the world, and show that impact can also exist within an ecology or geography of
photography. Through 20 contributions by Ariella Azoulay, Lewis Bush, Taco Hidde Bakker,
Andrew Jackson and Savannah Dodd, Shahidul Alam, Andrea Stultiens, and more, we learn how
impact is social, participative, conflictual.
