Spring 2020 - Course Outline and Expectations

Course Description
Students should be able to do the following -
Art Studio 11 and 12
1) Explore and create
- Use a variety of materials, processes and technologies
- Take creative risks and use a variety of styles
2) Reason and reflect
- Evaluate design choices and engage in critiques that are written and verbal
3) Communicate and document
- Document, share, and appreciate artistic works in a variety of contexts
- Demonstrate respect for self, others and place as well as express ideas, emotions and values through
art making
4) Connect and expand
- Examine the reciprocal relationships between visual arts, culture and society
- Evaluate personal, educational and professional opportunities in the visual arts
- Demonstrate safe and responsible use of materials, tools and work space

A wide variety of Print and Visual Resources: instructional handouts, videos on aspects of art theory and art history,
Internet resources, art books and colour wheel.
Evaluation

Term Marks Explanation


EOP 5% English only please! You receive 5% for good English speaking
habits.
Artist Sketchbook 25% The artist sketchbook includes creative work, journaling, drawing,
notes and self-assessments. Sketchbook assignments will be
assigned throughout the semester and evaluated monthly using a
rubric. Checklists will be used for self-evaluation.

Responses will be written to assigned questions, art history


Art Critiques and Reflections 15% assignments and reflections as well as noting, analyzing and
reflecting on your process in creating and completing class
projects. There will be homework and in class assignments to be
handed in for marking.
Art Projects 35% Projects and presentations are key to learning and understanding
the skills covered in Art 11 and 12. You should keep a digital copy
of your artwork so you can put together a portfolio. You will be
assessed with a variety of rubrics for each project and
Mid-Term Exam Project presentation.

The general rules: Why are rules important in the art room?

 Mutual Respect – At all times show all class members respect.


 Uniforms - Wear your uniform at all times. You can wear an apron when
doing messy projects.
 Computers – Are only used for research and reference when I tell you use
them (no videos, games or music!).
 I-pods and Cell phones – No cell phones or other devices to listen to music
are allowed. I will collect cell phones at the beginning of each class (they
must be in the box and not your bag).
 Language – EOP – this applies to this class at all times!!! What are some
good ways to make EOP work?
 Washroom break - You must ask the teacher to leave to go the bathroom.
 Food & drink - Only covered drinks are permitted in class – no pop, juice or
iced tea cans! Should food be allowed?
 Personal Responsibility – Come prepared on time and ready to learn
 Organization – Keep a neat and organized folder and bring your
sketchbook to class each day. This includes cleaning up at the end of each
class.
 Missed work – Complete assignments on time. Bring me an excuse note
and see me in advance. It is your responsibility to make up missed work!

Shape of the Course

What You Need Each Day:  Sketchbook (for sketching, written notes, ideas and reference
pictures) and folders
 Laptops for finding reference pictures, looking at art and
research (must ask to use it first)
