GIS ESSENTIALS TRAINING

Today, GIS related technologies power millions of decisions in areas such as health, water, weather and
climate, urbanization, transportation, crime, agriculture, energy, disasters, and security. Geospatial science
is an exciting multidisciplinary field, with diverse applications and job opportunities. This training will
combine formal presentation with hands-on practical exercises, designed to engage participants in active
interaction.

Focus Areas
Basic Geospatial Principles and GIS Tools

This module covers the essential concepts and methods of geographic data and analysis using GIS, with
emphasis on real world applications. Key topics covered will include map design and composition, spatial
data collection, data models and structures, basic GIS operations, map projection and coordinate referenced
systems, thematic mapping.

GIS for Field Data Gathering and Survey

This module encompasses the basic concepts of geographic data and analysis using GIS, with emphasis on
field data collection. Key topics covered will include spatial data collection, Global Positioning System (GPS)
and its data collection and integration into GIS.

Spatial Database Management

This module covers spatial database management systems (SDBMS), its functionalities and features. Specific
topics include relational database management, Structured Query Language (SQL), spatial database design,
spatial indexes, open source and commercial spatially-enabled databases.
Spatial Analysis

This module encompasses analytical operations to derive outputs from geospatial data, with specific focus
on data driven approaches. Topics addressed will cover analytical operations and methods, network analysis,
geoprocessing, raster data analysis, terrain analysis, and spatial interpolation.

Introduction to Python for GIS

This module covers computer programming of GIS and Remote Sensing analysis through Python scientific
programming language. Specific topics include introduction into Python programming, the ecosystem of
geospatial software and libraries, Python scripting for geospatial data acquisition, processing and analysis.

Publishing Map for the Web

This course covers the geospatial concepts and methods that underpin map publishing, with application
areas including utility, communication networks and transport networks. Specific topics include geocoding,
map matching, spatial routing, etc.

On completion of this workshop, participants are expected to:

• Undertake hands-on practical exercises using geospatial software and technology.
• Work with geospatial data to address practical societal problems.

Session duration: 2 hours each day for 5 days (Monday - Friday)
