CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Teaching is one of the noblest professions. In the Philippines, it is considered

even, as a vocation. Being a teacher is not a walk in the park. At a local setting, especially
in the public schools, teachers have to teach more or less 80 students per classroom.
Some even have to have their classes outside, where there are no roofs to protect their
heads from the blazing heat of the sun or from the drizzling rain. There also are teachers
who have to do multilevel teaching just so their students could learn something, all at the
same time.

There are a lot more challenges a teacher faces in his or her day to day activities
yet they still manage to smile whenever their students improved or did something good.
Now, here in the Philippines, a typical public school classroom would consist of chairs
(which, in some cases, are not enough for all the students so some would have to sit on
the floor), the teacher’s table in front and a chalkboard. New classrooms might have a
whiteboard, but mostly, the classrooms are equipped with just a chalkboard, some pieces
of chalk, a dusty eraser (sometimes just a piece of rug) and some charts or visual aids
made by the teacher.

The chalkboard inside the classrooms may be just a petty thing for some, but for
teachers, it is the greatest one could use to educate their students. A chalkboard eraser is a
special type of eraser. It is used mainly to erase the chalk markings on the chalkboard.
Usually, it is made up of thick felt strips attached to a cardboard or plastic handle.

Chalkboard erasers were invented by John L. Hammett in 1863. He owned some

stores in Rhode Island where he sold and created school products. Later on, he was able

iii
to put up a similar store in Boston. During that time, rags and old clothes were jused to
wipe off the chalk markings from the slate paint (paint which are used in making
chalkboards) however, in one of Hammett’s presentations, he found out that wool felt
strips work better in erasing the chalk markings rather than rags or old clothes. Soon
enough, Hammett formed a team to create a custom eraser for sale, hence the birth of
wool felt strip erasers that we know today.

Background of the Study

The researcher was impressed by Hammett’s story, however, staying inside a

classroom for the past 10 years made her realize quite a few things. One, when erasing

the board using a typical eraser, the said eraser constantly falls off, causing chalk dust

and chalk markings to scatter on the floor, thus creating quite a mess. Two, erasers with

cardboard handles tend to be destroyed faster than the plastic ones and three, letting the

erasers be stored in the little rectangular slots below the board makes it dusty and it

makes the chalk dust go back to the eraser even after you clean it.

And so the best thing to address such observations is to create her own version of

a chalkboard eraser, this time with a holder. With this eraser, one could easily grip on the

handle to avoid it from slipping from one’s hand. Second, the handle will be made of

plastic to make it more durable and make it last longer and three, since it comes with a

handle, one can just hang it so as to avoid chalk dusts from going back to the eraser after

cleaning.

iv
Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to answer the following questions:

1. What is the most effective material to be used in making the eraser with holder?

2. What could be the most effective and economic friendly design that would work

for the eraser?

3. Would this eraser be of help for teachers or for the whole classroom in general?

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework serves as a guide in conducting the investigation. It is

a basis for thinking about what the researcher would do and what it means. Influenced by

the ideas and study of others, the researcher would show how the work is done. A

paradigm is a diagrammatic representation of a conceptual framework and it depicts in a

more vivid way what the conceptual framework wants to convey.

Frame1 shows the input of the study the demographic profile of the respondents,

in this case, the select students and teachers from Senior High School in Tuy in terms of

sex, age and years employed or years studying in the school. The researchers also include

and want to know how students and teachers assess the current eraser they use at school

and the prototype product.

v
Frame2 presents the thru-put process including the construction and validation of

questionnaire, distribution of survey questionnaire, analysis and interpretation of data and

the presentation of data.

Frame3 shows the output of the study which is the preference of the

respondents regarding the design, the material and the overall usage of the product.

vi
Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is conducted to determine the best fit design and material for the

‘holdaser’ and how useful it is for the teachers and students. This portion of the study

will discuss the scope and limitation of the study.

The study will focus on the teachers’ and students’ preferences in the Senior High

School in Tuy. The study includes the profile of the respondents in terms of their age,

sex, years employed in the school or years studying in SHS in Tuy. This will be

conducted in the municipality of Tuy, Batangas and the data or information will be

gathered through the survey questionnaire constructed by the researcher.

Although this study aims to know the best design and material as well as the

overall usability of the product, the respondents will be, for now, limited to only the

teachers and students of Senior High School in Tuy. Also, only the plastic and cardboard

materials will be taken into consideration since there only is limited time and budget for

this study.

Significance of the Study

It is imperative for the readers and users of this study to understand its

significance and the over-all development the “holdaser” and its overall usability and

importance.

The study will be useful to the following:

vii
The faculty and the students of SHS in Tuy. This study is significant for the

SHS in Tuy Community since they are the ones who will benefit from the product first.

With the product at hand, the heavy load of cleaning will be quite easier.

The Researcher. This study is significant since it could open doors for many

other studies related to this topic. With this research study, the researcher will be able to

use her cognitive skills as well as the other skills she have acquired throughout her

continuous studies. It will also be a perfect time for her to put to the test everything that

she have learned so far. It will also be a great opportunity to be of help to a certain

community and at the same time, help them to be better individuals.

. Future Researchers. This study is significant since it could be used as future

reference. For future researchers, having some relevant information available is such a

great help. Also, this study could open up a lot of different topics which future

researchers could work on.
