Chapter 1

I. Introduction

Today, the internet has taken a firm place in people's lives. It is difficult to imagine a
young man who at least once a day did not check his phone for updates in social networks and
did not leaf through the news lines. The modern reality requires us to stay in touch and keep
abreast of the latest news and trends. However, does this trend affect the performance of
students?

Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to
share content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. The ability to share photos, opinions, events,
etc in real-time has transformed the way we live (Hudson,2019).

It is a known fact that a lot of parents are complaining about their children’s addiction in
using social media. They say that most teenagers can’t live without their phones anymore. When
they are about to sleep, the last thing they were holding was their phone and also the first thing
they check in the morning is their notifications on their social media accounts.

The existence of social media is really helpful to anybody. It can be a medium to

communicate with other people, your daily source of news and most widely used as an
entertainment. There’s a positive and negative effect of using social media. This may or may not
also affect the academic performance of students.

Social networking sites although has been recognized as an important resource for
education today, studies however shows that students use social networking sites such as
Facebook for fun, to kill time, to meet existing friends or to make new ones (Ellison, Steinfield,
and Lampe 2007). This made the researchers pursue on conducting a research that intends to
identify the relationship between the length of time students spend in social media and its
involvement in their academic performance.
II. Significance of the Study

Social media is becoming more popular among students and a way of spending free time and
serve as a separate channel for finding the necessary information, both educational and
entertaining. Therefore, it is urgent to examine if this has an effect on its users, in particular, how
the length of time using social media affects the academic success of students. This study will
discover this information, giving the researchers an opportunity to explore and gain new
knowledge. Furthermore, it can be used for future studies.

This study will be undertaken to find out if there is a significant relationship between the
two variables, length of time students use social media specifically the Facebook and academic
performance of the Grade 11 students in STI College Munoz-EDSA. The researchers firmly
believes that this will benefit the students to asses if using social media affects their academic
performance. If proven that there is direct relationship between the two variables, students may
gain awareness and may find a solution in order to prevent their academic performance to be
affected with their overusing of social media. This can also be beneficial to teachers and schools
for they can take advantage of the widespread use of social media as a way of disseminating
knowledge to the students. It can be a medium to give tasks and information that will help
students improve their academic performance.

III. Statement of the problem

This research aims to study how the length of social media usage affects student's
academic performance. This study sought to answer the following questions:

1. How long does the respondent use social media?

2. What is the General Average of the respondents?
3. Is there any significant relationship between length of time used in social media and
the academic performance?

General Problem

Is the length of time of social media usage affects students academic performance?
Specific Problem

To be more specific, the researchers aim to find the relationship between the length of
time of social media usage and the student’s academic performance.

Methodology

I. Research Design

The researchers will use correlational design where a researcher seeks to understand what
kind of relationships naturally occurring variables have with one another. In simple terms,
correlational research seeks to figure out if two variables are related and, if so, in what way. The
length of time using social media is the independent variable and academic performance is the
dependent variable. This study aims to know if there is a significant relationship between length
of time using social media and academic performance of grade 11 students in STI College
Munoz-EDSA.

II. Respondents and Proceedings

Using the convenient sampling, some grade 11 students will serve as the respondents.
The researchers will gather data from their social media time manager where in there is a record
of their daily record of how long they have been using it and their first quarter Grade Point
Average.

IV. Statistics

The statistical treatment that the researchers will use is the Pearson’s Correlation which

is the test statistics that measures the statistical relationship, or association, between two

continuous variables. It is known as the best method of measuring the association between

variables of interest because it is based on the method of covariance. It gives information about

the correlation, as well as the direction of the relationship.

It is a technique used for investigating the relationship between two quantitative and

continuous variables, X and Y. The X or the independent variable would be the length of time

using social media, while Y or the dependent variable would be the Grade Point Average (GPA)

of the students.
