3. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1. General
Design and materials construction, as well as the supply of components shall meet the
standards and rules shown in the relevant general and technical specifications attached.
However the Vendor shall be fully responsible for the proper working condition of the
instrument cable being supplied.
Vendor also to recommend any procedures and steps to be adopted, requiring the
Company to suggest whatever device, information and data in case they were not
indicated on the technical specification, in order to optimise and upgrade functionality
reliability for the instruments.
3.4. Conductors
Conductors shall be flexible or stranded plain annealed copper in accordance with IEC
60228.
3.5. Laying Up
Insulated conductors where applicable shall be uniform twisted together to form a pair.
The lengths of lay shall be such that two wires forming a pair are not easily
dissociated.
The lengths of lay shall not exceed 100mm.
A non-hygroscopic tape of minimum thickness 0.023mm shall be applied over the final
layer of pairs with a 25% overlap, 50% where two tapes are used.
3.7. Screens
Wherever specified, laminated screening tape shall be applied. Tape shall have a
minimum overlap of 25%, metallic side down, in contact with a tinned drain wire of
0.5mm² diameter minimum.
3.8. Shielding
The shielding to be provided for multicore cables (i.e. single pairs or single triples
separately shielded, cables overall shielding, single pairs/triples shielding plus cable
overall shielding) will depend on the type of signal, sensor and disturbance level present
in the cable installation area (either electromagnetic or EM interferences).
Single pairs or single triples cables for analogue signals (such as low voltage and current
signals) shall always be shielded.
Other considerations on the type of shielding deemed more suitable, may be given from
time to time, according to the type of EM interference either already present or expected
on the installation area.
All shields consisting of either aluminium tape or equivalent material, complete with drain
wire or high coverage copper braiding (95% min.) must be grounded at one end only,
preferably in Control Room, barring different System requirements.
As to multicore cables formed by pairs or triples the individual shields must be isolated
from one another.
The shield electric continuity, and their insulation, if any, must be ensured along the
overall cable run.
3.9. Bedding
The interstices between each core or pair and any central voids shall be filled with a non-
hygroscopic filler to form a circular and effectively filled cross-section.
3.10. Armour
A single layer of galvanised round steel wire armour with diameter sized to suit cable
glands to BS EN 50262.
The multicore cables will be selected among the following with the aim to reduce the
formation types:
Preferential multicore cables:
pairs: 1 x 2 x section, in mm²
6 x 2 x section, in mm²
12 x 2 x section, in mm²
24 x 2 x section, in mm²
The same formations will be deemed as preferential for triples multicore cables.
Special design and/or installation requirements may deviate from the above criterion,
upon notice to and/or approval by the Company, provided "ad hoc" construction
formations are not involved.
The single and multicore cable minimum section will be 1 mm², with exception for
intrinsic safety cables, for which the following will govern:
1 mm² for multicore cables
1.5 mm² for either single pairs and single triples
All above cables, either single or multicore, and including instrument supply cables
will require the following Uo-U rated voltage values:
The cables for low voltage and current analogue signals and cables for high level voltage
and current signal (such as instrument power supply, shut-down circuitry and digital
signals in general) will be generally laid in the same raceway provided they are suitably
separated, or in separate raceways.
Intrinsically safe cables will be generally laid on separate dedicated raceways; the
installation of mixed cables (intrinsic safety and non) on the same raceway may be
allowed provided they are adequately separated by a mechanical protection, such as
an insulating section or a grounded separator.
The cables for safety systems (such as fire and gas detecting circuits, ESD circuits)
will generally run on separate dedicated raceways.
The segregation between different type of cables is meant to be applied to the overall
cable runs (passages, terminal strips, junction boxes, etc.) unless differently specified.
The cable formation must take into account the homogeneity of the signals; in no case
will the usage of the same cable will be allowed for the transmission of analogue and
digital signals, unless with Company approval.
The final over-sheath shall be of a PVC compound which shall be suitable for the
specified duty and configuration and shall be applied by an extrusion process.
Insulation material shall be resistant to termites and fungus growth.
All instrument cables shall be ‘fire retarding’ type to IEC 60331-11 and IEC 60332 parts 1
& 3 and CE codes, with toxic gas low emission.
3.16. Bending
The cable supplier shall specify the minimum bending radius for each type of cable
offered and the minimum and maximum temperatures at which the cables can be
installed to these dimensions.
Each pair and core of every cable (single or multi-pair) shall be individually identified
using unique colour coding or numbering system.
3.18. Markings
3.19. Drumming
Each drum shall contain a single length of cable. The supplier shall advise the
limitations on minimum and maximum drum lengths. Each drum shall be clearly
identified with the following:
3.20. Size
The cables and glands shall be tested in accordance with the reference standards and
documentation. The supplier shall provide copies of test certificates for each type of
cable and gland to confirm compliance with the standards and suitability of the cable for
installation
4.1. General
Documents attached to this specification requiring Vendor's data (i.e. all data sheets or
where otherwise required) shall be filled up and returned attached to the proposal.
Moreover in bid phase, the Vendor shall enclose with its offer drawings & materials, of
the proposed equipment with technical description.
The Vendor shall include in his proposal the estimated utilities consumption.
The Vendor shall also include in his proposal the unit acceptance test at field.
The utilised units of measure shall comply with international system (S.I). Piping and
valves diameters shall be sized in inches.
