3 Installation
Preliminary
3.1 Mounting
Depending upon the configuration ordered, there are several ways to mount the VL2
B(P)PC ... EX . Use the appropriate section below to mount the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX.
NOTE:
Install the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX with adequate clearance around the heat sink to provide
sufficient air flow such that ambient temperatures do not exceed the operating limits.
Install cooling fan(s) in the enclosure, if necessary.
Connectors and switches must be accessible. A wall panel thickness of 1.9 mm (14 ga.)
is required for correct mounting with IP65 protection.
Preliminary
When installing the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX in a cabinet, follow these general rules:
– Verify clearances within the cabinet. Typically, leave at least 5 cm (2 in.) on each side
with 12.7 cm (5 in.) on the connector side if the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX has the optional
optical storage drive.
– Drill all holes and make all cuts before beginning installation. Be sure to protect already
installed components from shavings.
– Supporting panels must be at least 14 gauge to provide proper support.
– Make sure that there is adequate space around the heat sink (on the back of the VL2
B(P)PC ... EX) and air inlets and outlets to provide sufficient cooling.
NOTE:
Exceeding the system temperature limits can result in performance degradation of any or
Preliminary
all components. It is therefore important that the ambient temperature of the installation
environment is kept within the system temperature limits of your VL2 B(P)PC ... EX.
Please be aware that adding PCI/PCIe cards can add heat to the system.

After mounting the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX, make any necessary cable connections (see
Figure 3-5).
Preliminary
The available connectors are:
– Ethernet (ETH): Two RJ45 connectors allow the computer to communicate on a
10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet network.
– Serial (COM): One configurable serial port (D-SUB 9) for RS-232/422/485 is standard
on the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX.
An optional extended function panel provides three additional serial ports (D-SUB 9).
Two ports operate on the RS-232 layer. The third port may be configured in the BIOS
as either RS-232 (default), RS-422, or RS-485 (see “BIOS” on page 25).
The extended function panel is not a field-installable option and must be selected during
the original configuration.
– USB (USB): USB devices connect using Type A connectors. The VL2...2000 has four
Preliminary
USB 2.0 ports. The VL2...3000 EX, VL2...7000 EX, and VL2...9000 EX have two USB
2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports.
USB 3.0 ports utilize a blue connector. USB 2.0 ports are black.
– DisplayPort (DP): These ports connect the VL2 B(P)PC ... EX to external digital
displays with a corresponding DP++ connector.
– PCI/PCIe: This slot allows installation of either a PCI or a PCIe card (see “PCI/PCIe
card” on page 21).
The type of card (PCI or PCIe) must be selected when the product is ordered. Adding PCI
or PCIe support or switching bus types is not a field-installable option.

Preliminary
Ports X8 and X11 (if installed) can be configured to communicate on the RS-232, RS-422,
or RS-485 physical layer. The physical layer is set using the BIOS (see “BIOS” on page 25).
Ports X12 and X13 are limited to RS-232 only.
The VL2 B(P)PC ... EX is capable of the following communication parameters:
Preliminary
The table shows the capabilities of the IPC. Configuration of parameters to communicate
with a specific device is typically part of the software tool performing the communication.
The COM ports can also be set, when operating as RS-485 ports, to enable built-in bias and
line termination (see “Configurable serial ports” on page 25).

Figure 5-1 Drive replacement
Preliminary
To replace a drive:
1. Turn off the IPC and disconnect power.
Preliminary
2. Open the service door (1) by sliding the two latches (2).
Thermal pads on the drive may cause resistance when opening the service door.
3. Rotate the two thumbscrews (3) counterclockwise and pull the desired tray and drive
(4) assembly straight out until clear.
4. If desired, remove the four screws (5) securing the drive (6) in the tray and replace the
drive.
5. To install, place the drive in the tray and secure with the hardware provided with the
drive.
6. Slide the tray assembly into the bay. Note that some resistance will occur as the drive
mates with the connector. Secure the tray assembly using the thumbscrews on each
Preliminary
side.
7. Ensure that the thermal pad (7) on top of the drive is properly oriented to engage the
service door when it is closed, i.e., not wrapped around the top of the drive or hanging
off the edge.
8. Close and secure the service door using the two latches before applying power.

It is recommended that, if a reset is necessary, both the CMOS and BIOS be reset.
Preliminary
7. Close and secure the service door using the two latches.
8. Reconnect the power connector and apply power. During the boot process, a message
will appear notifying the user that the CMOS and BIOS settings have been reset to the
factory defaults.
9. During the boot process, press the <F2> key to access the BIOS settings (see “BIOS”
on page 25).
10. Update the BIOS configuration with any appropriate user-defined requirements.
The two-way DIP switch (6) is reserved for future enhancements. Do not adjust the DIP
settings unless directed to do so by Phoenix Contact technical service. Both rockers
should always be in the OFF position.
Preliminary
5.3.1 Battery disposal
NOTE:
Dispose of used batteries properly. Always adhere to currently valid national regulations
for battery disposal.
Battery disposal is regulated differently by different nations and regions. For instance,
Directive 2006/66/EC addresses disposal of batteries in the European Union. In the U.S., it
is regulated by individual states.
NOTE:
Preliminary
To prevent short circuitry in the collection boxes, insulate the poles of each battery with
insulation tape or put each single battery into a plastic bag.
Preliminary
Preliminary
Preliminary
The CMOS is a small chip that stores the BIOS settings, date and time, and other items of
the IPC. It is powered by the real-time clock battery and, if the battery is removed, will likely
lose its settings. It can be reset to the factory defaults using a reset button.
NOTE:
The CMOS and BIOS reset buttons are intended to be used only by advanced users or if
directed to do so by Phoenix Contact technical service. After the reset, the BIOS will need
to be reconfigured to account for any user-defined settings.
NOTE:
The VL2...2000 has a single reset button for the CMOS and BIOS.

5.5 BIOS
Preliminary
The BIOS configures the software to match the hardware contained within the industrial PC.
NOTE:
Changing BIOS parameters can lead to system instability and data loss. Therefore, it is
recommended that only advanced users modify the BIOS settings.
To access the BIOS setup utility, there must be an actual (physical) keyboard attached to
one of the USB ports.
During the boot process, press the <F2> key to enter the BIOS setup utility. Use the arrow
keys to navigate and highlight desired selections. Follow on-screen instructions and be sure
to save any changes.
Preliminary
A device must be connected before applying power to be displayed as a selectable
device.
A quick-boot menu allows changes to the boot sequence one time. This can be used to load
a new operating system from a USB drive.
1. Press the <F12> key during the boot process to access the quick-boot menu.
