CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
„‟ Look deep into nature… and you will understand everything better.’’
-Albert Einstein
Climate change is perhaps the most vulnerable challenge the world is facing right
now. In this time of technological advancements and fast phase of life we tend to neglect
to pay attention to our environment, Philippines is one of the countries that is greatly
affected on the effect of climate change, we are lacking knowledge and information on
how to mitigate the effects. The proponents of this project want to convey information
not only relaying on media and written information but through exhibits, like multimedia
and interactive settings. We learn fast and absorb the information on more easily if we
actually see it, feel it, and hear it. According to studies, we learn more though experience
and retain it subconsciously.
The project will show the significance and importance of nature to mankind. It
will show how ecology evolves on its natural setting, in present, future, and past. What
will happen in the future if we neglect it? What are the remedies that we can do to
mitigate the effect and be ready and resilient in times of crisis?
This project will not only shoe the solutions but also will setting the example of
using of renewable energy and green practices, the use of organic ways and other fun
activities in order for us to appreciate nature more in different perspective
Also a venue for every artist, professionals, environmentalist and nature loving
individuals to exhibit and promote their works about environment and to help educate
people on what is the significance of nature in our lives.
“The Earth is not dying, it is being killed. And the people who are killing it have
names and addresses.”
-Utah Phillips
Every organism on the earth relies to the nature; it‘s a pattern of give and take.
We make use to its natural resources and we take care of it. It‘s how the thing works, but
what if we only take and we don‘t give, we forgot to watch and protect our nature and
because of that we are affected by the negative consequences.
These primary issues results the Earth from becoming warm and even warmer that
is surely an alarming topic. This subject is being discussed not just in the Philippines, but
worldwide because of its serious and becoming a very serious matter because it will
affect the human life, the future and the next generations. The people‘s daily activities,
truly affects the Climate Change without them knowing, and it‘s happening very quickly.
With the growing society and modern technology, the nature is being neglected because
people must follow the flow of modern living in order to become progressive and more
competence
Global surface temperatures have increased over the past 100 years. And it‘s our
fault. That is so, the only thing the people can do is to adapt and reduce the effects of
Climate Change to aggravate.
MAIN THREATS:
These threats are getting worse because we don‘t know how to adapt with this climate
change. The information that may help to reduce the effect of climate change is not getting to the
people. For the lack of communication and demonstration they cannot apply it to their own
houses or premises. That‘s why we need a facility that will explain climate change, educate and
demonstrate the things that will alleviate the situation. They say experience is the best teacher.
Goal: To propose a complex that uses sciences, art, and design to spark the optimism,
drive, innovation, and carry solutions to the center of our shared public life and catalyse
broad community engagement.
Strategies:
Objective 2: Provide trails that guides visitor around the ecological sites and green
facilities on the development and a variety of activities that promote green living.
Strategies:
Strategies:
Objective 4: To become an ecological destination where everybody can enjoy its clean
surrounding, savour the fresh air, and appreciate God‘s masterpiece and a favourite site
for local and foreign outdoor enthusiast not far from the city
Strategies:
Put some camping sites and open spaces for picnic and outdoor activities
To have enough space to hold some local and foreign evens that team up with the
nature lovers
Showcase a beautiful vista and atmosphere that imitate the natural biodiversity
Ensure a good access from the nearest civilization like Metro Manila.
Immerse the visitor in the forest, bringing them to the close existing trees.
The building façade materials enhance the relationship to the trees through
reflectivity and varying opacities of glass, framing views, out and through the
building.
Strategies:
Strategies:
Design a facility that takes full consideration on the needs and convenience of the
delegates.
Provide a spacious area to hold out the number of participants
Proper programing of the activities that will promote green living.
Objective 7: Showcase different kind of green living tips for them to apply to sustain
their needs, such as food.
Strategies:
Provide an organic farm that utilizes less space and less maintenance.
Design an organic restaurant for them to experience different dishes from the
organic farm.
SCOPE
LIMITATIONS
The following topics of the research were partially included and considered in the
study but have been delimited to just familiarize the other related studies and proponents
identified in the architectural solutions as a part of its scope. These include:
The further study in waste management and water quality control (to have proper
understandings and awareness on a complex producing a large scale of waste that
can affect the water waste system of Antipolo City which runs to the Falls of
Hinulugang Taktak.
The further study in other type of farming aside from hydroponics which uses
renewable energy and effective in boosting crops for the people in the steep sloped
land.
The study the endangered and endemic trees of the Philippines which we tend to
preserve and propagate.
The study about the existing international scenario of eco-tourism – number of eco-
parks, their ownership, funding patterns ,and the activities provided which aim to
protect our environment
The designed prototype house has an estimated life span of more than Twenty (20)
years, if it would result into certain damages due force majeure e.g. earthquakes,
typhoons, etc., and human mismanage is beyond the proponents control.
The study about the possible technology regarding the regulation and reduction of
carbon.
The study about the possible technology that use natural energy to produce
mechanical or electrical energy that can be used on dwellings to reduce the
consumption of coal and fossil fuels.
The timely issue about climate change affects different countries, and one of this
is Philippines that is why it is considered as international environmental threat. Globally,
they are initiating conferences to educate people about it. The growing society/
civilization wipes-out the green color of the earth. As time changes, everything is
expected and subjected to transition. But every change must take into account, because
the goodness of one is not for the goodness of all. As Pope Francis states ―Human beings,
while capable of the worst, are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again
what is good, and making a new start.‖ It is true that science and tech have enriched our
lives, and provide us countless benefits. But these advancements don‘t necessarily
improve things across the board. ― Our immense technological development has not been
accompanied by a development in human responsibility, values, and conscience.‖
Moreover, no matter how important or valuable these developments are for, are non-
sense if the world itself destroyed.
This fundamental study shows or tells how climate change affects the lives of
people nowadays that is precisely noticeable or sensible. This focuses to different
calamities brought by it that surely people do not want to become worst. Architecture has
a big part in reserving nature by providing structures that are adaptive to climate change.
This is very much about resilience, adaptation, and mitigation—about our shared ability
to escape the danger our shared abilities and proclivities have created.
The proponents hoped to help people be educated, adapt to climate and provide
clever solutions to minimize the cause of it.
1.1.6 . Assumptions
The Proposal will be governed by agencies that concerning about the topic issues.
With the help of GREENPEACE Philippines and Loren Legarda‘s Office, the researcher
will able to know the technical aspects of the certain issues, know all problems
concerning, new kind of solutions, studies and technologies from exhibits and activities
conducted, and some existing example of applications.
Climate Change- Climate change is the long-term shift in weather patterns in a specific
region or globally. Unlike global warming, which refers to just one aspect of
climate change - a rise in the surface temperature of the earth‘s surface – climate
change refers to changes in a regions overall weather patterns, including
precipitation, temperatures, cloud cover, and so on.
According to the scientific experts in the field of climatology,
climate change is caused by human activities that have resulted in an
increased concentration of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, including
carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide.
Organic- Technically speaking, the term organic refers to any chemical compound
that is comprised of animal or plant-based components as well as compounds of
carbon. Organic matter, on the other hand, is any organism that is capable of
decaying naturally. For the purposes of ecolife‘s dictionary, we will be talking
about organic in terms of farming practices and food certification.
Organic as an agricultural practice is one that is more sustainable
and environmentally friendly and adheres to set standards as defined by
certain governing bodies. The Canadian General Standards Board defines
Force majeure – is also known as cas fortuit (French) orcasus fortuitus (Latin)
"chance occurrence, unavoidable accident".It is a common clause
in contracts that essentially frees both parties from liability or obligation
when an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the
parties, such as a war, strike, riot, crime, or an event described by the legal
term act of God (such as hurricane, flooding, earthquake, volcanic
eruption, etc.), prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations
under the contract. In practice, most force majeure clauses do not excuse a
party's non-performance entirely, but only suspends it for the duration of
the force majeure.
Smog - fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.
Though the museum will focus on how and why climate change is happening, including
what causes it and what it means for the future, its main goal will not be to send museum-
goers into a pit of despair, but rather to educate and motivate people towards making
change.
Miranda Massie, who is spearheading the project told Historical Climatology In June:
"While we must be honest about growing risks, this is very much a museum about
resilience, adaptation, and mitigation—about our shared ability to escape the danger our
shared abilities and proclivities have created."
Building a museum from scratch is a long progress, and the grand opening won't be for a
long time yet (they're aiming for about 6 years). In the meantime, Massie and the Climate
Museum team plan to run pop-up exhibits and an interim museum to generate support for
the project. Eventually, they hope to attract one million visitors a year. For comparison,
the Metropolitan Museum of Art brings in 6.3 million visitors per year and the American
Museum of Natural History attracts about 5 million annually.
Topic no. 2: Playgrounds and eco park With Natural Elements Offer More Benefits
For Children Than Traditional Parks
Research shows that when nature elements are incorporated into playgrounds kids have
more fun, are more active and utilize more motor skills. Researchers working at The
University of Tennessee, Knoxville examined how children at UT‘s Early Learning
Center used traditional plastic-based, brightly colored playground equipment. They
logged the amount of time kids spent playing on the plastic slide and other equipment
along with how much time kids sat on an adjoining porch area in order to get out of the
sun. Then the Early Learning Center staff begin renovations of the playground. A natural-
minded gazebo, dwarf trees, a creek, rocks and flowers were added to the play area.
Slides were built into nearby hills. Logs and tree stumps were also added, all of which
resulted in a more nature-based playscape for the kids. After the renovations, researchers
observed the kids again to see if there were changes in the kidsphysical activity levels.
Dawn Coe, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport
Studies at UT noted that there were many positive changes, saying, ―Natural playgrounds
have been popping up around the country but there was nothing conclusive on if they
work.‖ Coe added that now they know natural play areas work better for kids.
6.7: Estimated average sea level rise, in inches, during the 20th century. The rate since
1993 is about twice that of the past century.
―Scientists used to operate under the assumption that if people don‘t agree with you, it‘s
because they don‘t understand,‖ Hayhoe says. ―So they thought, ‗Oh, we just have to
explain it better.‘ ‖ But social scientists have learned that a simple lack of information
doesn‘t explain disbelief or indifference. ―Science can tell us why climate change is
happening, and what might happen next,‖ Hayhoe says. ―But what we should do about it
isn‘t a science question. It‘s a question of values.‖
And that‘s where Pope Francis comes in. He aligns the science of climate change with a
moral call-to-arms. As he states in the encyclical, ―Human beings, while capable of the
worst, are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again what is good, and
making a new start.‖
Introduction:
An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one
earth we all share. "It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that
requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore.
Climate‘s a very good indicator of the environment, must learn so we can save the planet
before things go very wrong.
The second study in 2007 consisted of focus groups with a range of target audiences to
unpack the issues further. Again, climate change was clearly the most popular exhibition
topic across all groups because:
In the past 12 months, the issue has moved beyond the realm of science into the
mainstream
People are confused and overwhelmed – can‘t trust politicians, industry or lobby
groups
With all the media coverage and THAT MOVIE, there is significant background
knowledge, but much of it is contradictory, making the issue even more
confusing!
We found that participants felt the Museum was in a perfect position to be that authority,
as audiences see us as a trusted source of scientific information and not aligned to a
political party, lobby group or big business partner:
I think the Museum has a great chance to be the authority on this issue, people trust the
Museum and its science.
What is renewable energy and what is its role in beating climate change?
The Climate Change: our future, our choice exhibition was held at the Museum from
May - August 2009. Two case studies gathered detailed feedback from teenagers; and an
observation study was undertaken with general visitors to track how they used the
exhibition and the total time spent. Here's a summary of our findings.
Teenage Boys
A class of 13-14 year old boys were observed visiting the exhibition, and then gave
detailed feedback using a list of headings to complete.
They were surprised at the exhibit that showed how much energy the human body could
generate; they'd tell their friends about the energy-generating takes; they wanted to
know why the exhibition was made from cardboard, how much it cost to build the
exhibition; as well as:
If we act now we can make a difference was seen as the main message of the exhibition.
Teenage Girls
A group of girls, the Eco-Warriors, were also invited in to the exhibition and after their
visit were asked a series of questions.
What sort of things they are currently doing about climate change?
The actions mentioned included activities both at school and at home and related to
energy saving, recycling, water saving, and sustainability. The Eco-Warriors had a well
developed understanding of the issues and measures needed to counter the effects of
climate change. Some examples of actions include:
Buy more durable things that will last you ages instead of less durable things that
won‘t last as long
After visiting the exhibition did they have any additional ideas for other things they
could do?
The exhibition clearly provided the students with new ideas for action:
It aroused a sense of realisation that global warming and climate change will and
are currently making a huge impact on our lives.
Eat less red meat and buy more locally grown or Australian grown food, rather
than imported stuff.
It hit home
Wouldn‘t take much to cause significant damage by using other cities around the
world
Brings us together
The climate change exhibition was really good and it is made so that anyone
could understand it. It hit home and if anyone had not been interested they would be after
the exhibition.
Observation Study
Visitors were tracked through the exhibition and length of time spent noted. They spent
between 30 sec and 40 minutes in the exhibition, with most wandering in without reading
the introduction text. We found that the exhibition was not able to immediately engage
young children. When parents entered, their children ran around and often headed to
Kidspace so, while parents appeared interested in engaging with the exhibits, they were
drawn away by their children. Little time was spent reading the labels and the majority of
visitors visited only one half of the exhibition. The most attractive exhibit was the
interactive table. Three visitors observed spent between 12-16 minutes at this one exhibit.
It was a highly social experience where we observed that groups discussed the choices.
Green museums strive to help people become more conscious of their world, its
limitations, and how their actions affect it. The goal is to create positive change by
encouraging people to make sustainable choices in their daily lives. They use their
position as community-centered institutions to create a culture of sustainability.
Saving the Planet from climate change is not easy. There will always some
limitations and boundaries. But as Homo-Sapiens, given with knowledge and intellect,
humans have no rooms for excuses and incapability. There will always be a solution. As
an Architect, we must make the first step for solutions and ideas. Architects are city
changer has a poignant today‘s response this will make an effort to the country as to
become a conservationist of nature, By showing the problems and solutions through the
project‘s museums, eco parks and mini-villages.
The study will focus on awareness of the people and the significance of their
participation and actions. It will show the importance of sustainability designs, green
methods and environmental friendly materials. The design will set a modern method yet
simple for others to apply and imitate. That Living green is not people usually think
‗expensive and critical‘.
Furthermore, This must set an example on how to progress and innovate but still
preserve the biodiversity on maintaining the natural settings of the place. The nature is a
very big consideration in designing.
The facility will be develop at the site given but will follow the natural
topography and slope. At the same time, the structure will be having a design varied
green landscapes with ramps, stairs, corridors large spaces, exhibits, open spaces, for
accessibility while interacting in the facility, The views, the trees, the sunset sceneries as
part of drama of the development as part of the activity. The other purpose of the project
will be predominating self-sufficient in energy and thus stand as an environmental model.
By integration of solar power, wind energy on the project for an alternative ways of
energy source, for example, the upper part of the roof will be having solar cells along
with the windows and canopy, concentrating some small wind turbines on wind direction
for other sources. Also with the use of recycled materials for construction such as used-
tires, bottles, plastics, woods and other in Antipolo City for other supporting structure of
the project.
These are parameters that should be applied to the whole concepts. Architectural
side of the study best fit all certain subjects. The history of the project includes, Theories
of spaces and factors regarding the functions and forms of the building, utilities, and
building technologies for structural stability.
Problem Identification
This is the time when the proponents search for a particular problem on a specific area
and consider the development for the selected type of project. It is the procedure what the
possible problems that needed appropriate solutions are. In this case ―How to aware the
society about climate change without the use of conventional methods of advertisement ―
Another problem that needs to be delivered is on how to educate the people on adapting
on climate change and persuade them to take an action.
Data Gathering
This is the procedure where in the proponents gather data and information that will support
the problem/s of the project that are needed to be solved. It includes the discovery and
researching topics and data that help solving the problem.
Research Topics
Climate Change Background and Profile
Climate Change Awareness related Studies
Antipolo City Background and Profile
Greenpeace Philippines
Antipolo City Tourism Industry
Climate Change Museum related studies
New Trend in Renewable Energy
Interactive Museums Related Studies
Basic Organic Farming in the Philippines
Environmental Conservation Programs
After gathering data, reading related articles and topics useful for the project. The
proponent must take-down and list all the necessary information and facts to make a
logical and reasonable hypothesis to put up a conclusion and solution on how to solve
the said problem/s.
Data Sources
The researcher can get more precise and accurate data and information from different
government agencies through undergoing interviews and variety of book sources from the
library to be able gather the important data needed to solve the stated problems.
The proponents has already gathered initial concrete data concerning the project through
different government agencies concerned in the study as well as libraries, local book and
design center. It was categorized the proponent into primary and secondary sources and
presented on the table below.
Philippine Solar Summit Convention at SMX For the needs of ideas and information
about the latest sustainable energy
supply
Data Evaluation
After gathering all the important data the researcher will now compile and study the
essence of the gathered information. The proper analysis and distinction of every detail of the
data should be observed for this will be the foundation and basis of the whole research.
The proponents should be able to assess all the data gathered from the said sources in this
part of the research. Recognized concepts and solutions of the researcher must be supported
with concrete and specific design solution to be applied in the design.
Conclusion
A concrete statement of the project that will lead to the development of space
programming and design framework shall take place after pulling out all the ideas and
information from the gathered data.
After that the proponents should conclude design strategies that will reflect on the design.
It includes planning strategies and direct concept should be planned efficiently according to
the design solution that the proponent come up based on the problems and questions.
The specific location of the project should be identified and all the limitations should be
addressed. The proponents should distinguish the strength, weakness, opportunities and treat
and consider it on how the facility will be planned and effectively arrange the developed idea
and concept to the chosen site.
Translation
In this portion is the transition of data from research to graphical output. This will give a
clear definition and interpretation of the design framework that was established in the
process.
This is the part where the ideas are ready to be put into the paper. This is when
architectural drawings are presented to illustrate how the strategies and techniques are applied
in the planning and construction.
Recommendation
After all the process being done the proponents will now get the recommendation based
on the conducted research. This time the researcher could think of the possibilities and further
research and how will it become more unique and efficient compares to the existing projects.
