AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

1.1.1 Background of the Study

„‟ Look deep into nature… and you will understand everything better.’’

-Albert Einstein

Climate change is perhaps the most vulnerable challenge the world is facing right
now. In this time of technological advancements and fast phase of life we tend to neglect
to pay attention to our environment, Philippines is one of the countries that is greatly
affected on the effect of climate change, we are lacking knowledge and information on
how to mitigate the effects. The proponents of this project want to convey information
not only relaying on media and written information but through exhibits, like multimedia
and interactive settings. We learn fast and absorb the information on more easily if we
actually see it, feel it, and hear it. According to studies, we learn more though experience
and retain it subconsciously.
The project will show the significance and importance of nature to mankind. It
will show how ecology evolves on its natural setting, in present, future, and past. What
will happen in the future if we neglect it? What are the remedies that we can do to
mitigate the effect and be ready and resilient in times of crisis?
This project will not only shoe the solutions but also will setting the example of
using of renewable energy and green practices, the use of organic ways and other fun
activities in order for us to appreciate nature more in different perspective
Also a venue for every artist, professionals, environmentalist and nature loving
individuals to exhibit and promote their works about environment and to help educate
people on what is the significance of nature in our lives.

“The Earth is not dying, it is being killed. And the people who are killing it have
names and addresses.”

The Proposal is an academically enriching tourist attraction which is geared

towards the development of a complete and simple understanding of climate change,
among students and career-professional individuals of today.

It is a perfect combination of both Science, Arts, and Nature experience

which are the harmonious integrals of cognitive and socio-cultural phases of
national and tourism developments in the country.

“Global warming is real. It is happening today. It is being charted by our

satellites. It is being charted by our scientists. It is being charted by those of us in this
body, and I think the real key is if we are ready to admit that fact and take the action to
make the necessary conversion.”
-Dianne Feinstein

1.1.2 Statement of the Problem

―Don’t expect to receive if you are not willing to give‖ – anonymous

Every organism on the earth relies to the nature; it‘s a pattern of give and take.
We make use to its natural resources and we take care of it. It‘s how the thing works, but
what if we only take and we don‘t give, we forgot to watch and protect our nature and
because of that we are affected by the negative consequences.

These primary issues results the Earth from becoming warm and even warmer that
is surely an alarming topic. This subject is being discussed not just in the Philippines, but
worldwide because of its serious and becoming a very serious matter because it will
affect the human life, the future and the next generations. The people‘s daily activities,
truly affects the Climate Change without them knowing, and it‘s happening very quickly.
With the growing society and modern technology, the nature is being neglected because
people must follow the flow of modern living in order to become progressive and more
competence

Global surface temperatures have increased over the past 100 years. And it‘s our
fault. That is so, the only thing the people can do is to adapt and reduce the effects of
Climate Change to aggravate.

MAIN THREATS:

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 3
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

 The rapid increase in rate of global warming as of present days.

 Majority of people are uneducated about Climate Change, that‘s why they feel
helpless.
 Extreme weather event is a major threat and timely issue especially in the
Philippines.
 Due to increased warming of the Earth, glaciers in polar region are melting that
causes high-tide.
 Natural habitat/ resources are swept away by outsiders to exploitation in the
name of development that causes loss of diversity.
 It could make it too hot to grow certain crops, and droughts caused by climate
change could reduce the amount of water available for irrigation. It also likely to
cause stronger storms and more floods, which can damage crops.
 Temperature related illnesses are abundant

These threats are getting worse because we don‘t know how to adapt with this climate
change. The information that may help to reduce the effect of climate change is not getting to the
people. For the lack of communication and demonstration they cannot apply it to their own
houses or premises. That‘s why we need a facility that will explain climate change, educate and
demonstrate the things that will alleviate the situation. They say experience is the best teacher.

1.1.4 Scope And Limitations

SCOPE

A carefully deliberated and educational Museum that will serve as nature

preservation and environmentally concerned facility which displays a virtual
representation of the current and forthcoming effects of climate change it also
accommodates Organic farms and an Organic Restaurant for the native and overseas
tourist that offers an environmental friendly experience. This serves a solution to the
awareness issue about climate change of the Philippines who are facing a severe extreme
weather changes and natural calamities: super typhoons, rising of the sea level, acid rains,
drought and etc. Architecture contributes a big part as it structures remain for an ample of
time, it also share in the urbanization where forest is converted into concrete jungles, it is
the time to take part in the preservation of our environment over the modernity of our
generation. In Addition, this serves an outline on how to deal with the same issue of the
lack of awareness of the society regarding climate change in the Philippines. This will
CHANGE not just our future, but the fate of the next generation thru the help of
Architecture.

LIMITATIONS

The following topics of the research were partially included and considered in the
study but have been delimited to just familiarize the other related studies and proponents
identified in the architectural solutions as a part of its scope. These include:

 The further study in waste management and water quality control (to have proper
understandings and awareness on a complex producing a large scale of waste that
can affect the water waste system of Antipolo City which runs to the Falls of
Hinulugang Taktak.
 The further study in other type of farming aside from hydroponics which uses
renewable energy and effective in boosting crops for the people in the steep sloped
land.
 The study the endangered and endemic trees of the Philippines which we tend to
preserve and propagate.

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 7
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

 The study about the existing international scenario of eco-tourism – number of eco-
parks, their ownership, funding patterns ,and the activities provided which aim to
protect our environment
 The designed prototype house has an estimated life span of more than Twenty (20)
years, if it would result into certain damages due force majeure e.g. earthquakes,
typhoons, etc., and human mismanage is beyond the proponents control.
 The study about the possible technology regarding the regulation and reduction of
carbon.
 The study about the possible technology that use natural energy to produce
mechanical or electrical energy that can be used on dwellings to reduce the
consumption of coal and fossil fuels.

1.1.5 Purpose, Relevance, Significance of the Study

The timely issue about climate change affects different countries, and one of this
is Philippines that is why it is considered as international environmental threat. Globally,
they are initiating conferences to educate people about it. The growing society/
civilization wipes-out the green color of the earth. As time changes, everything is
expected and subjected to transition. But every change must take into account, because
the goodness of one is not for the goodness of all. As Pope Francis states ―Human beings,
while capable of the worst, are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again
what is good, and making a new start.‖ It is true that science and tech have enriched our
lives, and provide us countless benefits. But these advancements don‘t necessarily
improve things across the board. ― Our immense technological development has not been
accompanied by a development in human responsibility, values, and conscience.‖
Moreover, no matter how important or valuable these developments are for, are non-
sense if the world itself destroyed.

This fundamental study shows or tells how climate change affects the lives of
people nowadays that is precisely noticeable or sensible. This focuses to different
calamities brought by it that surely people do not want to become worst. Architecture has
a big part in reserving nature by providing structures that are adaptive to climate change.

This is very much about resilience, adaptation, and mitigation—about our shared ability
to escape the danger our shared abilities and proclivities have created.

The proponents hoped to help people be educated, adapt to climate and provide
clever solutions to minimize the cause of it.

1.1.6 . Assumptions

The Proposal will be governed by agencies that concerning about the topic issues.
With the help of GREENPEACE Philippines and Loren Legarda‘s Office, the researcher
will able to know the technical aspects of the certain issues, know all problems
concerning, new kind of solutions, studies and technologies from exhibits and activities
conducted, and some existing example of applications.

The project will be sponsored by (NGU) Non-Government Units and other

Philippine Banks that do really promote and conduct Green Designs and exhibits.
Located at Antipolo City,Rizal, where extreme preservation of nature‘s forest and
landscapes is being regulated. With the help of Local Government of Antipolo City,Rizal
the researcher was able to find a suitable site location for the project that fits the
requirements of the researchers for site. In parallel to their campaign (YES) Ynares Eco
System, and in their local ordinances and support, the Project can be possibly become a
tourist spot.

1.1.7 Definition of Terms And Concept

EEPSEA – Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia

 Is a project administered by the International Development Research Centre
(IDRC) on behalf of the Sponsors Group. Typically, researchers learn
about EEPSEA by various means and apply for a. research or training award.

LGU- Local Government Unit

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 9
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

 An administrative and political government unit subsidiary to the national

government which could itself consist of sub-units as in the case of a province or
a municipality.

NGO – Non-Government Organization

 is an organization that is neither a part of a government nor a conventional for-
profit business. Usually set up by ordinary citizens, NGOs may be funded by
governments, foundations, businesses, or private persons.
Interactive - allowing a two-way flow of information between a computer and a
computer-user; responding to a user's input. If users receive real-
time feedback from a computer so thatthey can modify the use of the mach
ine, the hardware, software, or content, the system is said to be interactive.

Sustainable Design- (also called environmental design, environmentally sustainable

design, environmentally conscious design, etc.) is the philosophy of
designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply
with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability.
A sustainable design, regardless of the application, will seek to incorporate
environmentally-preferable outcomes such as:
 Lower energy and water consumption through the entire lifecycle –
from manufacture to daily use to disposal
 Minimize impact on climate change by reducing greenhouse gas
emissions or mitigating them through carbon neutralizing activities
 Limit resource consumption through waste-free manufacturing, a
preference for renewable resources, and an emphasis on recycled materials
 Reduce or eliminate waste by minimizing consumption, reusing
when possible, and recycling when necessary
 Minimize impact on the local ecosystem and look for ways to
incorporate biomimicry principles where possible
 Give preference to non-toxic materials and those that will
contribute to the health and wellbeing of humanity

 Emphasize quality and durability over price

Greenhouse effect – is the process by which radiation from a planet's atmosphere

warms the planet's surface to a temperature above what it would be in the absence
of its atmosphere. If a planet's atmosphere contains radioactively active gases
(i.e., greenhouse gases) the atmosphere radiates energy in all directions. Part of
this radiation is directed towards the surface, warming it.
On Earth, solar radiation at the frequencies of visible light largely
passes through the atmosphere to warm the planetary surface. The surface
itself emits energy at the lower frequencies of infrared thermal radiation.
Infrared radiation is absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
These gases also radiate energy, some of which is directed to the surface
and lower atmosphere.

Climate Change- Climate change is the long-term shift in weather patterns in a specific
region or globally. Unlike global warming, which refers to just one aspect of
climate change - a rise in the surface temperature of the earth‘s surface – climate
change refers to changes in a regions overall weather patterns, including
precipitation, temperatures, cloud cover, and so on.
According to the scientific experts in the field of climatology,
climate change is caused by human activities that have resulted in an
increased concentration of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, including
carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide.

Organic- Technically speaking, the term organic refers to any chemical compound
that is comprised of animal or plant-based components as well as compounds of
carbon. Organic matter, on the other hand, is any organism that is capable of
decaying naturally. For the purposes of ecolife‘s dictionary, we will be talking
about organic in terms of farming practices and food certification.
Organic as an agricultural practice is one that is more sustainable
and environmentally friendly and adheres to set standards as defined by
certain governing bodies. The Canadian General Standards Board defines

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 11
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

organic production this way: Organic production is a holistic system

designed to optimize the productivity and fitness of diverse communities
within the agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and
people. The principal goal of organic production is to develop enterprises
that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment.

Renewable energy- Renewable energy is energy that can be infinitely

replenished as it comes from natural resources such as geothermal heat, wind,
tides, sunlight, etc. Renewable energy is much better for the environment and
much more sustainable for our economies and socio-political stability than non-
renewable energy sources such as coal, oil, etc. Humans have been using forms of
renewable energy for centuries – it wasn‘t until the Industrial Revolution that
fossil fuel energy became popular.
Renewable energy is most often used to create electricity for use in
homes, offices, and industrial processes, but it can also be used to heat and
cool homes directly as well as for fuel for transportation. The most
important benefit of renewable energy is that it does not produce
greenhouse gasses, which helps to slow climate change.
Hydroponics- Hydroponics may simply be described as growing plants with
nutrients and water, and without soil. The water must be delivered to the
plant root system. The root system may hang directly in the nutrient
solution, be misted by it, or can be enclosed within a container or a trough
which is filled with a substrate [a replacement for soil]. The substrate may
consist of many different types of materials, such as perlite, sand, sawdust,
wood chips, pebbles, or rock wool. All substrates must provide good water
holding capacity, yet be porous for gas exchange. Between watering
events, they become the storage location of water and nutrients for the
plant root system. The roots grow within the substrate to secure the plant
within the container, or trough.

Ecotourism- Ecotourism is a form of tourism whereby the travelers place large

emphasize on traveling to uniquely protected and fragile areas with a main

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 12
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

concern to learning or protecting the local environment and community. Called

by alternate names, such as ecological tourism, sustainable tourism, green
tourism, and ecotravel, ecotourism is a relatively new concept in travel and one
that is somewhat in dispute. Sometimes confused with adventure travel,
ecotourism in its purest form is characterized by low impact tourism where
travellers learn about the local ecology and how to preserve it, all the while
benefiting the local community and economy.
The basic features of ecotourism include things like minimizing
negative environmental impacts, contributing to local conservation,
keeping profits within the local community, providing environmental
education, working with local communities to manage natural areas, and
so on.

Force majeure – is also known as cas fortuit (French) orcasus fortuitus (Latin)
"chance occurrence, unavoidable accident".It is a common clause
in contracts that essentially frees both parties from liability or obligation
when an extraordinary event or circumstance beyond the control of the
parties, such as a war, strike, riot, crime, or an event described by the legal
term act of God (such as hurricane, flooding, earthquake, volcanic
eruption, etc.), prevents one or both parties from fulfilling their obligations
under the contract. In practice, most force majeure clauses do not excuse a
party's non-performance entirely, but only suspends it for the duration of
the force majeure.

Encyclical -Roman Catholic Church.a letter addressed by the

Pope toall the bishops of the church.(of a letter) intended for wide or gene
ral circulation; general.

Biodiversity – Biodiversity refers to the essential variety on our planet,

including all organisms and species and their individual genetic variations
and how they assemble themselves into harmonized biomes and

BIOASIS 13
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

ecosystems. The concept of biodiversity refers to the rich interconnection

and interdependent forces at work in ecosystems that contain creatures of
all shapes, sizes, and varieties. There are millions and millions of distinct
biological species on the planet that have developed and evolved to
depend on a vibrant, varied, biologically diverse system for survival.
Greenpeace – Greenpeace is an international organisation that prioritises global
environmental campaigns.
Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Greenpeace has 2.8 million
supporters‘ worldwide and national as well as regional offices in 41
countries.

Green Design – Green architecture, or green design, is an approach to building that

minimizes harmful effects on human health and the environment. The
"green" architect or designer attempts to safeguard air, water, and earth by
choosing eco-friendly building materials and construction practices.

Business- As -usual – it is an unchanging state of affairs despite difficulties or

disturbances.

Carbon Emission – carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in the atmosphere,

produced by vehicles and industrial processes

Energy Revolution – The Energy [R]evolution 2012 provides a consistent

fundamental pathway for protecting our climate through investment in
renewable energy. It's about getting the world from where we are now to
where we need to be by phasing out fossil fuels and cutting CO2 emissions
while ensuring energy security.
Aerogel Insulation - Aerogels are made by removing the liquid from gels,
resulting in a material that is more than 90 % air. The porous structure of
that nanomaterial makes it difficult for heat to pass through. As a result,
aerogels make very good and light-weight insulators.

Smog - fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.

Photovoltaic - relating to the production of electric current at the junction of two

substances exposed to light. Of, concerned with, or producing electric
current or voltage caused by electromagnetic radiation, especially visible
light from the sun

1.2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Topic no. 1: CLIMATE CHANGE WILL GET ITS OWN MUSEUM

There are museums of sex, signs and

spies. Why not museums for climate
change? That's the idea behind a new
effort to build an educational museum in
the heart of New York City, a city that
has been seriously prepping for climate
disasters since Sandy slammed into the
metropolis three years ago.

Called The Climate Museum, the

museum aims to educate people about
climate change in an interactive setting
with exhibits that allow attendees to get a
more hands-on view of the effects of climate change on the planet, from increasing
carbon emissions to rising sea levels.

Though the museum will focus on how and why climate change is happening, including
what causes it and what it means for the future, its main goal will not be to send museum-
goers into a pit of despair, but rather to educate and motivate people towards making
change.

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 15
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Miranda Massie, who is spearheading the project told Historical Climatology In June:
"While we must be honest about growing risks, this is very much a museum about
resilience, adaptation, and mitigation—about our shared ability to escape the danger our
shared abilities and proclivities have created."

Building a museum from scratch is a long progress, and the grand opening won't be for a
long time yet (they're aiming for about 6 years). In the meantime, Massie and the Climate
Museum team plan to run pop-up exhibits and an interim museum to generate support for
the project. Eventually, they hope to attract one million visitors a year. For comparison,
the Metropolitan Museum of Art brings in 6.3 million visitors per year and the American
Museum of Natural History attracts about 5 million annually.

Topic no. 2: Playgrounds and eco park With Natural Elements Offer More Benefits
For Children Than Traditional Parks

Research shows that when nature elements are incorporated into playgrounds kids have
more fun, are more active and utilize more motor skills. Researchers working at The
University of Tennessee, Knoxville examined how children at UT‘s Early Learning
Center used traditional plastic-based, brightly colored playground equipment. They
logged the amount of time kids spent playing on the plastic slide and other equipment
along with how much time kids sat on an adjoining porch area in order to get out of the
sun. Then the Early Learning Center staff begin renovations of the playground. A natural-
minded gazebo, dwarf trees, a creek, rocks and flowers were added to the play area.
Slides were built into nearby hills. Logs and tree stumps were also added, all of which
resulted in a more nature-based playscape for the kids. After the renovations, researchers
observed the kids again to see if there were changes in the kidsphysical activity levels.
Dawn Coe, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport
Studies at UT noted that there were many positive changes, saying, ―Natural playgrounds
have been popping up around the country but there was nothing conclusive on if they
work.‖ Coe added that now they know natural play areas work better for kids.

BIOASIS 16

Topic no. 3: POPE FRANCIS' CLIMATE CHANGE EPIPHANY

A REVOLUTIONARY PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC

CHURCH AND SCIENCE

Science and religion usually make

uneasy bedfellows. That‘s why
Pope Francis‘ encyclical on
climate change, published in June,
made headlines. The papal essay
is the Vatican‘s first authoritative
word on climate policy, and it
takes an unequivocal stance: The
world needs to act.

Atmospheric scientist Katharine

Hayhoe, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University, says the Pope‘s
message might prove more effective than 30 years of scientists‘ efforts to communicate
the urgency of climate change.

6.7: Estimated average sea level rise, in inches, during the 20th century. The rate since
1993 is about twice that of the past century.

―Scientists used to operate under the assumption that if people don‘t agree with you, it‘s
because they don‘t understand,‖ Hayhoe says. ―So they thought, ‗Oh, we just have to
explain it better.‘ ‖ But social scientists have learned that a simple lack of information
doesn‘t explain disbelief or indifference. ―Science can tell us why climate change is
happening, and what might happen next,‖ Hayhoe says. ―But what we should do about it
isn‘t a science question. It‘s a question of values.‖

And that‘s where Pope Francis comes in. He aligns the science of climate change with a
moral call-to-arms. As he states in the encyclical, ―Human beings, while capable of the
worst, are also capable of rising above themselves, choosing again what is good, and
making a new start.‖

Topic no. 4: “An Inconvenient Truth” (Documentary)

Introduction:

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH is a documentary, an

instrument of public education and talks about the
problem of global warming in the earth and inspires
people to take action to save the earth. This
documentary centers on Al Gore, and his campaign to
make global warming a recognized problem
worldwide. Gore combines objective scientific
evidence, humor and personal insights to create a
powerful exploration of what he clearly believes is
the most critical issue of this or any other time in
human history. Davis Guggenheim was the director
of the documentary.

An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one
earth we all share. "It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that
requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND MUSEUMS

BY: DR LYNDA KELLY, CATEGORY: MUSEULLANEOUS, DATE: 02 JUL 2009

Climate‘s a very good indicator of the environment, must learn so we can save the planet
before things go very wrong.

The second study in 2007 consisted of focus groups with a range of target audiences to
unpack the issues further. Again, climate change was clearly the most popular exhibition
topic across all groups because:

 It‘s an issue that‘s become personal

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 18
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

 In the past 12 months, the issue has moved beyond the realm of science into the
mainstream

 The sense of personal responsibility has started to hit home

 People are confused and overwhelmed – can‘t trust politicians, industry or lobby
groups

 With all the media coverage and THAT MOVIE, there is significant background
knowledge, but much of it is contradictory, making the issue even more
confusing!

 With so much conflicting information regarding climate change, audiences are

craving an authority on the issue to clear things up once and for all, and assist
them in adopting a stance

We found that participants felt the Museum was in a perfect position to be that authority,
as audiences see us as a trusted source of scientific information and not aligned to a
political party, lobby group or big business partner:

It‘s a perfect fit for the Museum, it‘s science!

I think the Museum has a great chance to be the authority on this issue, people trust the
Museum and its science.

Some questions people wanted an exhibition to help them with were:

 What are acceptable levels of warming?

 What are the possible outcomes, at varying degrees of warming?

 Are these changes due to emissions or part of normal cycles?

 What is our ability to reverse the effects?

 What can I personally do?

 What is renewable energy and what is its role in beating climate change?

WHAT DID VISITORS THINK ABOUT THE CLIMATE CHANGE

EXHIBITION?

BY: DR LYNDA KELLY, CATEGORY: MUSEULLANEOUS, DATE: 07 JAN 2010

The Climate Change: our future, our choice exhibition was held at the Museum from
May - August 2009. Two case studies gathered detailed feedback from teenagers; and an
observation study was undertaken with general visitors to track how they used the
exhibition and the total time spent. Here's a summary of our findings.

Climate Change Postcard 3

Photographer: © Australian Museum

Teenage Boys

A class of 13-14 year old boys were observed visiting the exhibition, and then gave
detailed feedback using a list of headings to complete.

They were surprised at the exhibit that showed how much energy the human body could
generate; they'd tell their friends about the energy-generating takes; they wanted to
know why the exhibition was made from cardboard, how much it cost to build the
exhibition; as well as:

How long will it be before [climate change] gets really bad?

How many species will be extinct in the future years of climate change?
Is climate change ever going to stop?

If we act now we can make a difference was seen as the main message of the exhibition.

Teenage Girls

A group of girls, the Eco-Warriors, were also invited in to the exhibition and after their
visit were asked a series of questions.

What sort of things they are currently doing about climate change?
The actions mentioned included activities both at school and at home and related to
energy saving, recycling, water saving, and sustainability. The Eco-Warriors had a well
developed understanding of the issues and measures needed to counter the effects of
climate change. Some examples of actions include:

 Worm farm at school

 Installing water saving appliances home and school

 Recycling bins in classrooms

 Air conditioning less or lower

 Buy more durable things that will last you ages instead of less durable things that
won‘t last as long

After visiting the exhibition did they have any additional ideas for other things they
could do?

The exhibition clearly provided the students with new ideas for action:

 Buy more re-usable items for future use.

 It aroused a sense of realisation that global warming and climate change will and
are currently making a huge impact on our lives.

 Eat less red meat and buy more locally grown or Australian grown food, rather
than imported stuff.

What do you consider to be the main messages of the exhibition?

The main messages in the exhibition were considered to be:

 Climate change is scary

 Climate change will affect me

 Climate Change is happening now

What will you tell your friends about this exhibition?

The students were very positive about the exhibition and several asked if it had been
designed especially for teenagers. They considered the exhibition worth visiting; they
enjoyed the experience, learnt from it and would recommend it to others.

The climate change exhibition was really good and it is made so that anyone
could understand it. It hit home and if anyone had not been interested they would be after
the exhibition.

Observation Study

Visitors were tracked through the exhibition and length of time spent noted. They spent
between 30 sec and 40 minutes in the exhibition, with most wandering in without reading
the introduction text. We found that the exhibition was not able to immediately engage
young children. When parents entered, their children ran around and often headed to
Kidspace so, while parents appeared interested in engaging with the exhibits, they were
drawn away by their children. Little time was spent reading the labels and the majority of
visitors visited only one half of the exhibition. The most attractive exhibit was the
interactive table. Three visitors observed spent between 12-16 minutes at this one exhibit.
It was a highly social experience where we observed that groups discussed the choices.

Topic no. 6. A green museum

BIOASIS 23
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

A green museum is a museum that incorporates concepts of sustainability into its

operations, programming, and facility. Many green museums, but not all, use their
collections to produce exhibitions, events, classes, and other programming to educate the
public about the natural environment. Many, but not all, green museums reside in a
building featuring sustainable architecture and technology. Green museums interpret their
own sustainable practices and green design to present a model of behavior.

Green museums strive to help people become more conscious of their world, its
limitations, and how their actions affect it. The goal is to create positive change by
encouraging people to make sustainable choices in their daily lives. They use their
position as community-centered institutions to create a culture of sustainability.

1.3 THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Saving the Planet from climate change is not easy. There will always some
limitations and boundaries. But as Homo-Sapiens, given with knowledge and intellect,
humans have no rooms for excuses and incapability. There will always be a solution. As
an Architect, we must make the first step for solutions and ideas. Architects are city
changer has a poignant today‘s response this will make an effort to the country as to
become a conservationist of nature, By showing the problems and solutions through the
project‘s museums, eco parks and mini-villages.

The study will focus on awareness of the people and the significance of their
participation and actions. It will show the importance of sustainability designs, green
methods and environmental friendly materials. The design will set a modern method yet
simple for others to apply and imitate. That Living green is not people usually think
‗expensive and critical‘.

Furthermore, This must set an example on how to progress and innovate but still
preserve the biodiversity on maintaining the natural settings of the place. The nature is a
very big consideration in designing.

The facility will be develop at the site given but will follow the natural
topography and slope. At the same time, the structure will be having a design varied
green landscapes with ramps, stairs, corridors large spaces, exhibits, open spaces, for
accessibility while interacting in the facility, The views, the trees, the sunset sceneries as
part of drama of the development as part of the activity. The other purpose of the project
will be predominating self-sufficient in energy and thus stand as an environmental model.
By integration of solar power, wind energy on the project for an alternative ways of
energy source, for example, the upper part of the roof will be having solar cells along
with the windows and canopy, concentrating some small wind turbines on wind direction
for other sources. Also with the use of recycled materials for construction such as used-
tires, bottles, plastics, woods and other in Antipolo City for other supporting structure of
the project.

These are parameters that should be applied to the whole concepts. Architectural
side of the study best fit all certain subjects. The history of the project includes, Theories
of spaces and factors regarding the functions and forms of the building, utilities, and
building technologies for structural stability.

1.4 METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH

To attain a creative output for the proposed project the activities should have systematic
and efficient process. Methodology suggests a sequence of accurate and fact based analysis
and restricts the presence of indefinite that may arise. Likewise, it gives an impression of the
research guiding the proponents to a clear track, creating a more precise environment. Major
Activities of the research method are discussed in this chapter such as data collection.

Problem Identification

This is the time when the proponents search for a particular problem on a specific area
and consider the development for the selected type of project. It is the procedure what the
possible problems that needed appropriate solutions are. In this case ―How to aware the
society about climate change without the use of conventional methods of advertisement ―

PUNSALAN - CASUPANAN - YUSI

BIOASIS 26
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Another problem that needs to be delivered is on how to educate the people on adapting
on climate change and persuade them to take an action.

Data Gathering

This is the procedure where in the proponents gather data and information that will support
the problem/s of the project that are needed to be solved. It includes the discovery and
researching topics and data that help solving the problem.

Research Topics
 Climate Change Background and Profile
 Climate Change Awareness related Studies
 Antipolo City Background and Profile
 Greenpeace Philippines
 Antipolo City Tourism Industry
 Climate Change Museum related studies
 New Trend in Renewable Energy
 Interactive Museums Related Studies
 Basic Organic Farming in the Philippines
 Environmental Conservation Programs

After gathering data, reading related articles and topics useful for the project. The
proponent must take-down and list all the necessary information and facts to make a
logical and reasonable hypothesis to put up a conclusion and solution on how to solve
the said problem/s.

Data Sources

The researcher can get more precise and accurate data and information from different
government agencies through undergoing interviews and variety of book sources from the
library to be able gather the important data needed to solve the stated problems.

The proponents has already gathered initial concrete data concerning the project through
different government agencies concerned in the study as well as libraries, local book and
design center. It was categorized the proponent into primary and secondary sources and
presented on the table below.

BIOASIS 28
AN INTEGRATED BUILT ENVIRONMENT TOWARDS A RESILIENT NATION IN RESPONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE

After gathering all the important data the researcher will now compile and study the
essence of the gathered information. The proper analysis and distinction of every detail of the
data should be observed for this will be the foundation and basis of the whole research.

The proponents should be able to assess all the data gathered from the said sources in this
part of the research. Recognized concepts and solutions of the researcher must be supported
with concrete and specific design solution to be applied in the design.

Conclusion

A concrete statement of the project that will lead to the development of space
programming and design framework shall take place after pulling out all the ideas and
information from the gathered data.

After that the proponents should conclude design strategies that will reflect on the design.
It includes planning strategies and direct concept should be planned efficiently according to
the design solution that the proponent come up based on the problems and questions.

The specific location of the project should be identified and all the limitations should be
addressed. The proponents should distinguish the strength, weakness, opportunities and treat
and consider it on how the facility will be planned and effectively arrange the developed idea
and concept to the chosen site.

Translation

In this portion is the transition of data from research to graphical output. This will give a
clear definition and interpretation of the design framework that was established in the
process.

This is the part where the ideas are ready to be put into the paper. This is when
architectural drawings are presented to illustrate how the strategies and techniques are applied
in the planning and construction.

Recommendation

After all the process being done the proponents will now get the recommendation based
on the conducted research. This time the researcher could think of the possibilities and further
research and how will it become more unique and efficient compares to the existing projects.
