1. Sumpner’s test is conducted at rated conditions on two identical single phase transformers
each rated 1 kVA, 230 V/115 V. The readings of the two wattmeters were found to be
70 W each. The efficiency (in %) of one such transformer on full-load at unity power factor
is
2. A 15 kVA single phase transformer has a core loss of 150 W and a full load copper loss of
300 W. If this transformer experiences a full load at unity power factor for 12 hours/day
and no-load for rest of the day, the all-day efficiency (in %) of the transformer is
3. A 1 kVA, 250 V/125 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer is connected to a resistive load
of 20 Ω at its LV winding. Choosing transformer rating as the base, the per-unit value of
the load impedance referred to HV side is
4. A 200 V DC shunt generator supplies a load resistance of 20 Ω at rated terminal voltage.
The armature and field resistance are 1 Ω and 200 Ω, respectively. The armature reaction
and brush drop are neglected. The voltage regulation (in %) of the generator is
5. A three-phase, four pole, 1500 rpm, star-connected, synchronous machine has a double-
layer full-pitched winding with 100 turns per phase and a distribution factor of 0.96. If the
flux per pole in the machine is 0.02 Wb, then the rms line-to-line value of the generated
voltage (in V) on no-load is
6. A 415 V, 50 Hz, 6-pole, three-phase, star-connected synchronous generator delivers a
power of 1000 W per phase at a load angle of 30o to the infinite bus. If the stator winding
resistance is neglected, the maximum power per phase (in W) that can be delivered by the
generator is
7. A three-phase, 100 MVA, 50 Hz, 11 kV, star-connected synchronous generator delivers
a rated armature current at 0.6 lagging power factor to an infinite bus at 11 kV. If the
excitation is changed (keeping the power delivered to the bus unchanged) such that the
generator operates at 0.8 leading power factor, then the armature current (in A) is
8. A three-phase, 50 Hz, 2 pole induction motor, has the rotor leakage reactance at standstill
equal to twice of the rotor resistance. The stator impedance is neglected. The rotor speed
(in rpm), when the induction motor develops maximum mechanical power, is
9. A 10 kW, 400 V, 50 Hz, star-connected, three-phase induction motor running at a rated
load is drawing an input current of 22 A at 0.8 power factor lagging. The efficiency (in %)
of the induction motor is
10. For a 4-pole, 50 Hz, three-phase induction motor running at a particular load, the total
mechanical power developed and the total rotor copper losses are found to be 17 kW and
1 kW, respectively. The rotor speed (in rpm) of the induction motor at that load is

Part B: Closed-Book [Marks: 70, Duration: 120 min.]
Instructions:
1. Start a new question on a fresh page and answer all parts of the question together.
2. Make appropriate assumptions wherever necessary and justify them.
3. Overwritten answers will not be rechecked.

Question 1: A 1000 rpm, 400 V DC shunt machine has an armature resistance of 1 Ω and a
field resistance of 400 Ω. Neglect armature reaction and brush drop.
(a) The machine, as a motor, draws a line current of 5 A from its rated supply on no-load at
rated speed. Calculate the constant losses of the machine. [5]
(b) Estimate the efficiency of the machine, when used as a motor, drawing an armature current
of 40 A at the rated terminal voltage. [5]
(c) Determine the speed of the machine, when used as a motor, such that it draws an armature
current of 40 A at rated terminal voltage . [5]
(d) If the given machine is operated as a generator at the rated terminal voltage, calculate its
maximum efficiency. [5]
(e) If the given machine is operated as a generator, calculate the input (shaft) power such
that it is delivering a load current of 39 A at the rated terminal voltage. [5]
Question 2: A 2300 V, 230 kVA, 50 Hz, four pole, star connected, three phase synchronous
machine has a synchronous impedance of j10 Ω per phase.
(a) If the given machine is used as a generator, calculate the voltage regulation from no load
to full load at 0.8 lagging power factor. [7]
(b) The given machine is operated as a motor connected to the rated supply. If it generates
a (gross) torque of 800 Nm at an excitation emf of 2000 V (line to line), calculate the
current drawn from the supply and the power factor. Also, specify the nature of the power
factor. [7]
(c) Let the given machine be operated as a motor connected to an infinite bus (at the rated
voltage) operating at unity power factor and drawing half its rated current from the infinite
bus. Keeping the power drawn from the infinite bus unchanged, if the motor is overexcited
such that the current drawn is rated current, calculate the total reactive power and the
excitation emf per phase. [7]
(d) Calculate the per-unit value of the synchronous impedance. Choose the machine rating as
the base. [4]
Question 3: A 400 V, 50 Hz, three phase, 4 pole, star connected induction motor gave the
following test results:
No load test: 400 V, 8 A, 1100 W.
Blocked rotor test: 110 V, 25 A, 2000 W.
The effective ac stator resistance per phase is 0.5 Ω.
(a) Determine the parameters of the exact equivalent circuit model. The shunt branch con-
sists of only the magnetizing reactance. Draw the equivalent circuit showing numerical
values. [8]
(b) Calculate the maximum torque and the corresponding slip using the circuit model in
part (a). [6]
(c) Calculate the total input power and the line current at a slip of 5 % using the circuit model
in part (a). [6]
