10.1 Introduction
The column shown in Figure 10.1 is pin-ended about both axes and has no
intermediate restraint. Design the column in S275 steel for the factored force shown
below.

10.2 Member checks

10.2.1 Determine the effective length
The member is effectively held in position at both ends, but not restrained in direction 4.7.3
at either end. Therefore, the effective length LE = 1.OL = 6000 mm. Table 22

10.2.2 Trial section

Try 356 x 368 x 129 UC in grade S275
From section property tables:
Depth D = 355.6 mm Vol 1
Width B = 368.6 mm Page B-8
Web thickness t = 10.4 mm
Flange thickness T = 17.5 mm
Depth between fillets d = 290.2 mm
Radius of gyration about x-x axis r, = 15.6 cm Vol 1
Radius of gyration about y-y axis r, = 9.43 cm Page B-9
Gross area A, = 164 cm2

In the design of columns under axial compression only, it is sufficient to determine 4.7.4
whether the section is “class 4 slender” or “not class 4 slender”.

For the outstand element of a compression flange, the limiting b/T for a class 3 3.5.2
semi-compact flange is 1%. Table 11
Limiting b/T = 1 5 ~= 15 x 1.02 = 15.3
The actual b/T = 10.5 < 15.3
Therefore, the flange is “not class 4 slender”.

For the web of an I-or H-section under axial compression, the limiting d/t for a 3.5.2
Table 11
class 3 semi-compact web is but 2 4 0 ~ a,

Limiting d/t = = 56.7
1 + (2x 0.58)

The actual d/t = 27.9 < 56.7

Therefore, the web is “not class 4 slender”.

The cross section is “not class 4 slender”.

I
The compressive strength p , is obtained from the relevant strut curve for buckling
about the x-x and y-y axes. For a rolled H-section with T<40 mm:

Buckling about the x-x axis

Use strut curve b Table 23
For A, = 38.5 and p y = 265 N/mm2, pcx = 243 N/mm2 Table 24b

Buckling about the y-y axis

Use strut curve c Table 23
Licensed copy:scottwilson, Scott Wilson Holdings, 15/01/2007, Uncontrolled Copy, © SCI

For A, = 63.6 and p y = 265 N/mm2, p c y = 189 N/mm2 Table 24c

Therefore, p c = 189 N/mm2

P, = 16400 x 189 x 10-3 = 3100 kN

F, = 2500 kN

2500kN < 3100kN

Therefore, the compression resistance is adequate.

Adopt 356 x 368 x 129 UC in S275

10.3 Blue Book approach

The compression resistance calculated above could have been obtained directly from Vol 1
Volume lr2]. Page C-6

Try 356 x 368 x 129 UC in grade S275

For LE = 6.0 m, P,, = 3990 kN and Pcy = 3090 kN

Therefore, P, = 3090 kN
F, = 2500 kN
2500 kN < 3090 kN
Therefore, the compression resistance is adequate.

Adopt 356 x 368 x 129 UC in S275
