Remember the Titans

I chose the film “Remember the Titans' ', by Boaz Yakin, released in 2000, which is

about an all-white high school that was forced to be integrated with an all-black high school.

They go through racial problems within the school and especially within a new football coach

who happened to be black. So, this little town in Virginal and the people in it white, black,

coaches, players, townspeople supporting the football team had to come together and set aside

their tensions they had with the other race and learn that racial discrimination is wrong and that

it’s not good to discriminate somebody whether they are white or black. Also, the players and

coaches have to get along to have the most successful season possible. Additionally, they started

getting bonds that even the people close to them who discriminate against the opposite race and

the bond couldn’t even be broken by that.

I chose this movie/film because it teaches a very great life lesson on racial inequality,

discrimination and racism between whites and blacks during that time period. It shows us that

you shouldn’t discriminate or judge people based off what they look like based off of the color of

their skin or etc. It shows that we need to come together as one in this world and that hatred and

discrimination toward one another white or black will get you nowhere and will just keeve you

with hatred in your heart and etc. It also depicts brotherhood between an interracial football
team. It just brings back the memories between my high school football team and how the whites

had to accept the blacks and the blacks had to accept the whites.

This film relates to my experiences during my time playing sports whether it was football

or basketball and we had to go against teams that had racist crowds or racist teams in general or

all white schools that looked at us differently. Additionally, my football team had to come

together as a collective and as a group to achieve one goal and that's winning football games and

competing for a title. But instead we got brother ships and long-life friendships due the coaches

bringing us together and making us interact with one another and become close as teammates.

Also, I use to have this perception based off of those moments until I came to college and

realized most people of the opposite race were just like me had the same goals same intress etc.

in some type of way and I started to hang around people of a different race due to this new

perception or thought of them. When I go through those moments I look back at the film and

remember how those African American athletes had to bond with the white athletes and they

found out that they have similar interest in music sports and love for the game just like I found

out. Even Though they both had to go through their racial differences at one point.

Furthermore, when I watched the movie again I noticed certain things in the movie that I

didn’t get when I remembered the film and I realized how the coach in the film did similar

exercises and tasks in the movie so the players can get to know one another of a different race.

The experiences in the movie also that I noticed that were similar to mine were the scenes where

they went through camp not even sitting with different races the blacks sat with blacks and the

whites sat with whites. Lastly, the most important scene in the movie that they experienced that
was similar to my high school team is when this Black player on defense made a great play and

the captain of the defense side was white congratulated him and that made me smile a little bit

and just realize that's why they all start coming together.

In conclusion, I just wanted to write my personal narrative on something that I can relate

to especially being a black male on a segregated football team just like the movie displayed and

having similar and different experiences to the movie.
