FRTU (FEEDER REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT)

The Feeder Remote Terminal Unit (FRTU) is an intelligent electronic device designed for use in
feeder automation. The device acquires data from the feeders & transfersit to the main Control
Station. FRTU is highly modular, featuring flexibility to interchange its I/O modules which provides an
advantage of easy maintenance &upgradation. It provides wide range of communication interfaces
including Ethernet, RS 232, RS 485 and USB for configuration, monitoring and control of tasks.

FRTU supports multiple industry standard protocols, including IEC 60870-5-101 Slave, IEC 60870-5-
104 Slave, IEC 60870-5-103 Master & Modbus-RTU Master, so that a wide range of IEDs & MFMs can
be integrated & the required data can be communicated back to the main Control Centres.

HARDWARE
The FRTU consists of an enclosure, a Power Supply Module, Processor module, and
various I/O modules. The enclosure is available with either 3/6 I/O module positions which
allow various input and output modules to be fitted. The following figure shows the basic
architecture of FRTU.

FRTU is inclusive of the following type of modules:

• PSM: Power Supply Module

• CPM: Central Processor Module
• AIM - 8 channel: Analog Input Module
• DIM - 16 channel: Digital Input Module
• DOM - 8 channel: Digital Output Module

POWER SUPPLY MODULE (PSM)

The auxiliary supply range for FRTU is 18-52 VDC. The green coloured POWERLED
glows when the
unit is switched ON. An adequate protection against reverse polarity,
overcurrent, and under voltage
conditions is present to prevent the module from being damaged in
an event of external effects.

CONTROL PROCESSOR MODULE (CPM)

The USP-020i Control Processor Module (CPM) provides a range of

communication options including Ethernet, RS232 and RS485. It
supports multiple industry standard protocols including IEC 60870-5-
101 Slave, IEC 60870-5-104 Salve, IEC 60870-5-103 Master and
MODBUS-RTU Master.

The CPM also includes a Local/Remote switch & OLED display which is
provided for status indication. The power supply required varies from
18V to 52VDC.
