Rep. Shelly Hutchinson’s Statement On 11Alive’s Investigative

Reporting And Rep. Kelley’s Actions
Snellville, GA—Earlier this week, 11Alive reported that a man who hit and
killed Eric Keais, a pedestrian, while driving, immediately called Rep. Trey
Kelley after the accident. Rather than report the accident to 911 and
emergency services, Rep. Kelley and his friend chose to call the police
chief at his home, who also did not immediately notify emergency services.
No charges have been filed in the case despite the coroner ruling it a
homicide. Following this reporting, Rep. Shelly Hutchinson had the
following to say:

“My heart breaks for Eric, and his friends and family. Nobody should die
alone or in those conditions and I hope those who loved him find peace.

As a member of the Georgia State House, I am incredibly troubled by the

reporting about my colleague. This story highlights the worst stereotypes
and fears people have about government officials—that our power will not
be used to help the public, but to benefit our personal friends and allow
them to get away with anything.

It is my hope that the investigation into what really happened on that tragic
night in September will reveal the truth. At a time when people’s trust in
government and political leaders is at an all-time low, we must be vigilant
against any kind of corruption. This alleged behavior from a Representative
is unacceptable, harmful to our state, and beneath his office.
We are entrusted with incredible power by the people of Georgia and it is
our sacred responsibility to use that power for the public’s good, not to
shield our friends. It is of the utmost importance that the truth be revealed,
that justice be done, and that the integrity of the Georgia State House be
preserved. No matter who you are or who your friends are, nobody should
be above the law.”
