Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This PowerPoint includes images for the children of the moon phases. The PowerPoint is a great
representation since it gives the students voice and choice. On PowerPoint you can utilize graphics and
animations, highlight critical information, and support students with their vocabulary. PowerPoint provides
options to express and demonstrate what they know. Using PowerPoint provides models, feedback and
supports for their different levels of proficiency. Using this activity is student centered. Students are able to
choose what they want to do to learn and actually choose something they have interests in. For the ESL
students within the class, being able to have a visual representation of the moon phases.
Lesson idea implementation:
For the beginning of the lesson, the students can go through the PowerPoint on the moon phases. The
teacher can lead the discussion by asking questions such as “does anyone know what the moon phases are?
“Could you label the moon in the sky with one of the phases in the PowerPoint?” The students can come up
with higher-order thinking questions (at least 5) to assess their classmates. This could be used as a great
activity for them and their classmates.
After a certain amount of time, the students can do turn and talk to discuss how they came up with the
questions, where they found the answers and I will also ask them which questions were hard to them and
what do they think can help them. The students will be assessed by their open-ended discussions. As we
come to an end, the teacher will allow the students to write down the “grows and glows” that reflect their
learning experience during this lesson. This allows them to privately tell whether or not they need extra help
with something or if they want something complex for a challenge.
Reflective Practice:
Doing this activity could impact the students learning in a great way. I do believe we learn best when working
with a peer and this activity allows that. To extend the lesson, I could allow students to come up with quiz
questions about the moon phases and tell me the answers. They could even ask their peers these questions

as a miniature quiz. The students are always allowed to come to the PowerPoint or mp4 for extra help on
their moon phases. This will definitely be helpful for them as we go through the lesson!
