ABSTRACT

The world is today celebrating the improvements in communication

technology which has broadened the scope of communication through Information

and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Modern Technology in communication

no doubt has turned the entire world into a “Global village”. But as it is, technology

like two sides of a coin, bring with it both negative and positive sides. It helps

people to be better informed, enlightened, and keeping abreast with world

developments. Technology exposes mankind to a better way of doing things. Social

networking sites include: Twitter, Yahoo, Messenger, Facebook Messenger,

Skype, iPhone and Androids.Students at all levels of learning now have divided

attention to studies, as a result of available opportunities to be harnessed from

social media. Whether these opportunities promote studies is a question that needs

to be answered. Thus, the problem this study investigates is the impact of social

media networks on the academic performance and behavioral changes of the

students in Olongapo Wesley School. This study is significant to the teachers,

parents and students.

CHAPTER ONE

Introduction and background to the study

The world is today celebrating the improvements in communication

technology which has broadened the scope of communication through

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Modern Technology in

communication no doubt has turned the entire world into a “Global village”. But as

it is, technology like two sides of a coin, bring with it both negative and positive

sides. It helps people to be better informed, enlightened, and keeping abreast with

world developments. Technology exposes mankind to a better way of doing things.

Social networking sites include: Twitter, Yahoo, Messenger, Facebook

Messenger, Skype, iPhone and Androids. These networking sites are used by most

people to interact with old and new friends, physical or internet friends (Asemah

and Edegoh, 2012).

The world has been changed rapidly by the evolution of technology; this

has resulted into the use of technology as the best medium to explore the wide area

of knowledge.

The evolution of internet technology has led to its use as the best

medium for communication. Whereby, two-third of the world’s internet

population visits social networking or blogging sites, thus serving as a

communication and connection tool. Social networking sites (SNSs) are online

Communities of Internet users who want to communicate with other users about

areas of mutual interest, whether from a personal business or academic

perspective (William ,Boyd, Densten, Chin, Diamond & Morgenthaler 2009).

7
The millions of social networking sites have transformed the thought of global

village into a reality whereby billions of people communicate through social

networking sites. Numerous benefits have been obtained through distant

communication through the use of social networking sites.

Higher institutions as well as the level of employability in one’s career is

inevitable Academic excellence or achievement plays an important role in an

individual placement, be it in the academic institutions or job placement. Due to

this, many people are concerned with the ways they can enhance their academic

achievement.

The emphasis on academic excellence which is also prevalent worldwide

has encouraged many studies about the conditions promoting it. The role of

academic achievement as one of the predictors of one’s life success and also in the

aspect of academic placement in schools to e (Kyoshaba, 2009). Academic

performance, which is measured by the examination results, is one of the major

goals of a school. Hoyle (1986) argued that schools are established with the aim

of imparting knowledge and skills to those who go through them and behind all this

is the idea of enhancing good academic performance.

Academic performance or achievement is the outcome of education, the

extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals.

Academic performance is commonly measured by examinations or continuous

assessment but there is no general agreement on how it is best tested or which

aspects are most important, procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative

knowledge such as facts (Annie, Howard & Mildred, 1996).

8
A direct relationship exists between Social media usage and the academic

performance of students in universities.

However the darker side within technological evolution has resulted in

dilemmas such as the setback of real values of life especially among students who

form the majority of users interacting through the use of social networking

sites. Online social networking sites focus on building and reflecting social

associations among people who share interests and or activities. With so many

social networking sites displayed on the internet, students are tempted to abandon

their homework and reading times in preference for chatting online with friends.

Many students are now addicted to the online rave of the moment, with Facebook,

Twitter and more.

Today most youth and students possess Facebook accounts. The reason

most of them perform badly in school might not be far- fetched. While many minds

might be quick to blame the poor quality of teachers, they might have to think even

harder, if they have not heard of the Facebook frenzy (Oche & Aminu, 2010).

Olubiyi (2012) noted that these days’ students are so engrossed in the social media

that they are almost 24 hours online. Even in classrooms and lecture theatres, it has

been observed that some students are always busy Facebooking, while lectures are

on.

Times that ought be channeled towards learning, academic research and

innovating have been crushed by the passion for meeting new friends online, and

most times busy discussing trivial issues. Hence, most students’ academics suffer

setback as a result of distraction from the social media. In (Obi, Bulus, Adamu &

9
Sala’at 2012), it was observed that the use of these sites also affects students’ use

of English and grammar. The students are used to short forms of writing words

in their chat rooms; they forget and use the same in the classrooms.

They use things like 4 in place of for, U in place of You, D in place of The

etc. and this could affect their class assessment.

Social networking sites although has been recognized as an important

resource for education today, studies however shows that students use social

networking sites such as Facebook for fun, to kill time, to meet existing friends or

to make new ones (Ellison, Steinfield, and Lampe 2007).

Although it has been put forward that students spends much time on

participating in social networking activities, with many students blaming the

various social networking sites for their steady decrease in grade point averages

(Kimberly, Jeong and Lee, 2009), it also shows that only few students are aware of

the academic and professional networking opportunities the sites offered.

According to Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), social network websites

grab attention of the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and

inappropriate actions including useless chatting. Whereas on the other hand,

(Liccardi, Ounnas, Massey, Kinnunen, Midy, & Sakar. 2007) reviewed that the

students are socially connected with each other for sharing their daily learning

experiences and do conversation on several topics.Tinto (1997) argued that

extracurricular activities and academic activities are not enough to satisfy some

student those who are suffered by social networking isolation.

10
This shows that social networks are beneficial for the students as it

contributes in their learning experiences as well as in their academic life. Trusov,

Bucklin, & Pauwels (2009) noted that the Internet is no doubt evolution of

technology but specifically social networks are extremely unsafe for teenagers,

social networks become hugely common and well-known in past few years.

According to Cain (2009) social network websites provide ease of connecting

people to one another; free of cost and after connecting one can post news,

informative material and other things including videos and pictures.

Wiley and Sisson (2006) argued that the previous studies have found that

more than 90% of tertiary school students use social networks. In the same way

Ellison et al (2007) stated that the students use social networking websites

approximately 30 minutes throughout the day as a part of their daily routine life.

This statement shows the importance of social networking websites in

students’ life. Lenhart and Madden (2007) revealed through a survey that students

strongly recommend social networking websites to stay in touch with friends to

keep informed and aware.

Social information processing theory is an interpersonal communication

theory which suggests that online interpersonal relationship development might

require more time to develop than face-to-face relationships, but when developed,

it has the same influence as face-to-face communication. This means, the more

students use social media, the more they influence their disposition to studies,

11
given the fact that friends from social media will begin to exert influence on each

other.

Statement of the problem

The world today is a global market in which the internet is the most

important sort of information. Since the advent of social media sites in the 1990s,

it is assumed in some quarters that the academic performance of students is facing

a lot of neglect and challenges. The educational system in Nigeria is faced with so

many challenges which have certainly brought about a rapidly decline in the quality

of education. There is a deviation, distraction and divided attention between social

networking activities and their academic work. It is observed that students devote

more attention to social media than they do to their studies.

Students’ addictiveness to social networks, students’ frequency of

exposure to social network, social media network that the students are more

exposed to and the influence of social media as a medium of interaction between

students has been part of discussion in recent times and which have imparted on

their academic performance.

Instead of students reading their books, they spend their time chatting and

making friends via the social media and this might definitely have influence on

their academic performance, because when you do not read, there is no way you

can perform well academically. Some are so carried away that even as they are

walking along the high way, they keep chatting. The manufacturing and

distribution of equally sophisticated cellular phones has complicated the

12
situation, as students no longer need to visit a cybercafé before they send and

receive messages. Attention has been shifted from visible to invisible friends, while

important ventures like study and writing might be affected in the process.

This phenomenon has become a source of worry to many who believe in

knowledge and skill acquisition. In recent times social media have been a major

stay in the minds of students and the world at large thereby causing a lot of drastic

measure by students, teacher and even educational administrators at large. It is

therefore of great importance to explore some of the trending issues facing students’

academic performance as a result of social media.

Students at all levels of learning now have divided attention to studies, as a

result of available opportunities to be harnessed from social media. Whether

these opportunities promote studies is a question that needs to be answered.

Thus, the problem this study investigates is the impact of social media

networks on the academic performance and behavioral changes of the students in

Olongapo Wesley School.

Goal and objective of the study

The purpose of this study generally is to examine the influence of Social

Media on the Academic Performance and behavioral changes of students in

Olongapo Wesley School. Specifically, the study seeks;

1. To examine the level of student addictiveness to social media and the influence

on their academic performance.

13
2. To determine the social media network that the students are more exposed to

and the influence on their academic performance and behavior.

3. To ascertain how the use of social media has influence the academic performance

and behavioral changes of the students in Olongapo Wesley School.

4. To ascertain the difference in students’ usage of social media network by gender.

5. To ascertain what are the positive and negative effects of social media.

Research Questions

The following research questions were raised;

1. How many hours in a day do you use your cellphone or any mobile device?

2. What particular application do you most likely use?

3. Could you survive without any technology- based specimen?

4. What do you think are the bad and good ones that have been brought to you by

social media?

5. How does social media influence you?

Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses are generated by the researcher and was tested in this

study:

1. Students’ addictiveness to social network has not significant influence on their

academic performance and behavior.

14
2. Student’s exposure to social media network has no significant influence on

students’ academic performance and behavior.

3. Use of social media dot not significantly influence on the academic performance

of the students in Olongapo Wesley School.

4. There is no significant difference between male and female student usage of

social media network.

5. Age does not have significant influence on the use of social media.

Significance of the study

This study is significant to the teachers, parents and students. This study

will help the teachers of the school to know the influence that social media has on

their students, so as to assist them to enlighten and create awareness to the students

on the possible influence it has on them. The study is of significant to parents in the

sense that they will know the possible effects these social media usage has on their

children, so as to serve as watch-dog to their children on the usage of the social

networking site. The study will enable the students of the senior level so that they

will be aware that, apart from the social benefits of this social networking site, using

the sites more than necessary will pose possible dangers to their health.

It will be relevant in assisting students in understanding the diversity of

social media. It will provide relevance material for students and other researchers

undertaking similar research. The study will help researchers with more

information on the Impact of social media on student’s academic performance and

behavioral changes.

15
Scope of the study

The focus of this research work is to primarily study the Influence of social

media on the academic performance of students. The study will comprise students

in Olongapo Wesley School.

Limitation of the study

The study covered what are the positive and negative effects and how does

it affect a teenager in Olongapo Wesley School except the Grade 10 students,

through academic performances and behavioral changes.

Definition of terms

As words may mean differently in different contexts, the following

definitions are given as the words used as intended to be understood for the purpose

of this study.

Social Media- They are forms of electronic communication which facilitate

interactive base on certain interests. Social media include web and mobile

technology

Social Networking Sites- A website where people put information about them

and can send to others.

16
Social Networking- The use of internet to make information about yourself

available to other people especially people you share an interest with to send

messages to them.

Media- Are all those media technologies that are intended to reach a large

audience by mass communication.

Academic- It is concerned with Studying from books as opposed by a practical

work.

Students- Someone who is Studying at a University or School. Someone who is

very interested in a particular subject.

Computer- A computer is a machine that receives or stores or process data

quickly according to a stored program.

Tweets- A short message posted on Twitter (a micro blog).

ICT- Information and Communication Technology.

Teenager- A teenager, or teen, is a person who falls within the ages of 13 to 19

years old.

17
CHAPTER TWO

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This research aims at measuring impact of social media on

the millennials' academic performances- of how they abuse using their mobile

phones. Technology is growing quickly from year to year, and the younger

generations are the ones caught in this fast change.

The internet is today the most important source of

information. It has been observed that students spare more attention and time to

social media than they do for their studies and they cannot pass their examinations

well if they do not learn. Literature review facts - it is a fact of the internet that

every click, every view and every sign-up is recorded somewhere.

Apparently there are 600 million more people that own a

mobile phone compared to those who own a toothbrush. Some research reveals that

there are 4.8 billion mobile users but only 4.2 billion people with a toothbrush.

Actually, many reasons exist that explain why students love to spend time

socializing. Firstly, social networks give them the freedom to do whatever they

want — to upload what they want and talk to whom they want. They like to make

new friends and comment on the lives of different people. Students can create other

online identities that the real world does not allow. The freedom it gives them to

act just by sitting in front of a computer or using mobile phone attracts them, and

they then request for more freedom.

18
They can learn new things just by themselves and they can

be aware of the news around the world. Never before has it been so easy for young

minds to create a digital image of their actions through such a voluntary medium.

Impact - as a coin has two faces so has social media. It has both positive and

negative aspects, we have to choose on our will that what is right for us.

Technology should be used in making something useful not

a waste. Social media has transformed the way people communicate and socialize

on the web. There is a positive effect on business, politics, socialization as well as

some negative effects such as cyberbullying, privacy, and fake news. Social media

has surely made us closer to other parts of the world. We can contact anyone around

the world at any time, with just a few keystrokes. One of the negative effects of

social media is it leads to addiction.

It can distract the focus and attention from a particular task.

It lowers the motivational level of people mostly teenager and students.

Another negative aspect of social media is fake news. There

are more cases that we have encountered about fake news recently. Everyone is

connected to one another in this wide network generated by the internet. The new

world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts.

In the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts

among people were restricted by long distance, nationality and religion. But now,

even these barriers cannot stop the flow of information, conversation and

knowledge.

19
CHAPTER THREE

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the description of the research design selection and

description of respondents, research instruments, data collection procedure and

statistical treatments used.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive research method with the questionnaire as

the main instrument in gathering data. Descriptive method is a fact - finding study

with emphasis with what actually exist as current conditions and situations.

According to Polit and Beck (2004), the purpose of a descriptive research

is to observe, describe and document aspects of a situation that naturally occurs and

sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis generation or theory

development.Since the study is concerned with the positive and negative effects of

social media to the academic performances and the behavioural changes of students

in Olongapo Wesley School, therefore the descriptive method of gathering data is

the most convenient method to utilize for the investigation.

20
Research Respondents

The researchers considered the high school student respondents and the

senior high student respondents of Olongapo Wesley School comprising of 42

members, male and female.

They were the chosen respondents, because their opinions had to do with

the data gathering. Moreover their generation is evidently more dependent on

technology than the way people used to before. In addition to this, Social Media for

them is not only a way of communication and socialization but a good way for

searching information.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at the Olongapo Wesley School main campus and

the "Project Joshua" campus since the chosen respondents are the High School

students and the Senior High School students of the school.

Data Gathering Instrument

A questionnaire is used to gather data. The questionnaire aims to know

about the opinion of high school and senior high school students about the positive

and negative influences of social media to the behavioral changes of students in

Olongapo Wesley School.

22
Data Gathering Procedure

The data was collected by interviewing the respondents on how they use

their phones, on what social media applications they use and how social media can

affect their lives based on their behavioral changes.

26
Table 5 shows that most of the respondents cannot survive without any

technology-based specimen.

One of the respondents even said, “At this modern time, I don’t think I can

survive.” But a respondent also said, “Although I am kind of obsessed to my

cellphone, I think I can still survive without it because I love adventures and the

outside world more than my phone. I think I’m only addicted to it when I’m at

home because once I get to go out, I rarely use my phone so I’m sure I can survive

without it.” An eye opener for teenagers.

RQ4: What do you think are the bad and good ones that have been brought

to you by social media?

Respondents mostly stated, the bad thing is that teenagers always forget

their moderations. The downside of it is the widespread of fake news which is very

rampant nowadays. Respondents also said that it has turned them to be lazy most

of the time while using it. But then the bad thing isn’t social media itself, It’s the

people who makes it complicated, sometimes people lose control of themselves

while using social media that’s why they intend to do bad things unconsciously.

On the other hand, the good side of it is that it has some education based

contents and you can socialize with it. Social media is a bridge that connects people.

Through social media we could socialize with people. People learn a lot of facts

daily, schoolworks became easier and faster to accomplish. Social media has made

our way of living much easier, convenient and better.

RQ5: How does social media influence you?

27
Respondents answered that it influences them to socialize with everyone or

be able to understand how other’s mind works. To promote equality, love, peace

and justice. Influences the way they live, act or dress. Their aspect of life, how their

character is builded up, connect with people around them, broaden their view at the

world, seek self- improvement.

Influences or affects their behavior in a way where teenagers see something

and do it unconsciously, affects their mood and the decisions they make. What they

see is what they apply or do in their lives. In terms of academic performances on

how it influences them, social media has influenced respondents to become lazy

doing school works, therefore social media’s impact to academic performances is

that it influences a teenager to be lazy.

We interviewed a psychologist namely Dan C. Garcia, and here are the

questions we raised:

1. What is your opinion about using social media?

It can influence the physical and social aspect of a student in Olongapo Wesley

School, thru personality, emotional, physical and spiritual. It could enhance or

develop a student’s character, values, behavior and intellectual capacity.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of social media?

Advantages- Can easily communicate, adopt and apply. Has legalistic

approach.

28
Disadvantages- Fake news, pessimistic or negative ideas that influence the

youth.

3. What do you think are the effects on behavior among teenagers by social media?

Social media is a dictator. It’s like hypnotizing the people mostly the youth to

something you’re not supposed to.

4. Do you think social media affects the academic performance of a teenager?

Positively, it gives ideas and information in any given situation.

Negatively, when a student cannot adopt or understand.

5. As a psychologist, how or what are your observations on a teenager using social

media?

My observation is that it can influence the whole being of a person. It can

change a state of mind. One thing I observed is that when a teenager is attached to

his or her any social media device, it’ll be hard for him/ her to adjust without it.

Teenagers are really impulsive and does not know or care about limitations

anymore. Just as Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray said, “Everything is good but

in moderation.” Always think before you click!

29
CHAPTER FIVE

Summary of Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter presents the summary of the research conducted, the

conclusions and recommendations for further research.

Conclusion

This research pursued on determining how social media affects an

individual, particularly a teenager in Olongapo Wesley School. What is its impact,

is it good or bad, what are the positive and negative effects? By interviewing the

students of Olongapo Wesley School, we, researchers were able to find out and

discover how effects of social media to the behavior of students. The respondents

30
were asked 5 questions that involves them about social media, respondents are

divided per grade level and gender. Concluding all their answers, researchers

conclude what are the benefits and effects of social media.

Social media is a broad topic and this research focuses on the youth sector

and what is its impact through academic performances and behavioral changes,

with the data we gathered, social media plays a big role on everyone’s lives.

Whether you are young or old, social media is a big part of life because we are

living in the digital age.

The point is, nothing is so wrong and so right about it. Researchers

therefore conclude that social media has a huge impact through behavioral changes

in Olongapo Wesley School teenagers for they use it every day.

RECOMMENDATIONS

With the gathered data and conclusions conducted by the researchers, the

researchers recommend the school to:

1. Discuss and raise awareness to students about using social media.

2. Confiscate cellphones during class.

3. Seminars, meetings with the parents of the students. Seminars about social

media awareness and right usage.
