Abstract

This research aims to answer the following questions:

•Are there any effects of participation in athletics on academic performance rate among athlete's ?

•Are there any positive and negative impact of sports participation on the academic performance of the
respondents?

Summary

Based on the gathered data, the findings of this study indicate that high school sports
participation increases motivation and teaches teamwork, self-discipline and better in academic
performance rate. Athletics and academic performance has been studied in the literature. As a result,
the relationship between the academic performance of high school athletes was investigated in this
study. It was determined that there was a significant relationship that existed between academic
performance and athletic participation. Through an analysis of high school boys and girls, it was found
that athletic participation had a positive impact on academic performance ad that impact may be
attributable to their academic performance rate. Studies of high school athletes athletic participation
were considered in order to give a broad review of the relevant literature in terms of the impact that
athletic participation has been found to have on academic performance and other positive, as well as
negative, indicators. The discussion of the literature with respect to those findings indicated that there
were a number of possible explanations for those findings. While many studies have shown that high
school athletes love sports, athletic activities is fun, they join sports because they want to play, sports is
interesting, they are inspired to compete in athletic, sports is to explore more, to meet new friends and
other athlete's from other places, sportsmanship and teamwork is needed in sports, being athlete is a
stong person, joining athletics activities results to a more positive attitude towards school, and there are
some who say that because of athletic activities their grade in negatively affected. They prefer academic
performance rate over athletic activities to enhance their knowledge. Some hate academic and they join
athletics to just retain their grade. Our study contributes to this body of literature by explaining the
impact of joining sports in academic performance . Data show that those who participate in athletic
activities have better in academic performance rate.
Introduction

This part of the study includes a brief review of the literature in order to frame the
background of the research.Athletics have come to play a major role in the life of high schools and
universities. For several generations, athletics and education have been identified with each other, with
the result that sports culture has become embedded within academic can't understand and culture on
many levels. Traditionally, participation in sports was said to make boys into men and help them
appreciate teamwork, duty, sacrifice and dedication. Sports build character, and engendered the values
of good sportsmanship in young men. As a result of this tradition, a number of researchers have argued
that “organized sports can play a beneficial role in the development of children into educated and well-
rounded students” . One routinely hears, from podiums and in official school statements, that “high
school athletics can have a profound influence on our youth, our schools, and our communities” . The
promotion of sports as a path toward maturity was supported by studies that have found that
“participation in extracurricular activities….affect academic performance, attachment to school and
social development” among high school students . Participation in sports and related physical education
activities “provide opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork…and the opportunity to
apply academic skills in other arenas as part of a well rounded education”.

The effect of participating in athletics as a youth on performance is theoretically

ambiguous. Participation may reduce the time available for studying learning. Conversely, it has been
argued that sports increases students’ motivation and teaches and self-discipline, resulting in positive
academic spillovers. Studies have, in fact, shown that high school athletes better grades have higher
educational and occupational aspirations, spend time doing homework , and a more positive attitude
towards school than non-athletes. However, associations may simply be a reflection of unobservables
correlated with both sports participation and the under study as opposed to causal in nature. To our, to
date there has been no attempt in the empirical literature to distinguish between these hypotheses.

Conclusion and Recommendation

Conclusion

Based on the gathered data, the findings of this study indicate that high school sports
participation increases motivation and teaches teamwork and self-discipline. Athletics and academic
performance has been studied in the literature. Despite the junior high level research conducted, their
are consensus has been reached regarding the impact of athletic participation on academic
performance at the high school. As a result, the relationship between the academic performance of high
school juniors was investigated in this study. It was determined that there was a significant relationship
that existed between academic performance and athletic participation. Through an analysis of high
school boys and girls, it was found that athletic participation had a positive impact on academic
performance and that impact may be attributable to there academic performance rate. Studies of high
school level athletic participation were considered in order to give a broad review of the relevant
literature in terms of the impact that athletic participation has been found to have on academic
performance and other positive, as well as negative, indicators. The discussion of the literature with
respect to those findings indicated that there were a number of possible explanations for those findings.
While many studies have shown that high school athletes love sports, athletic activities is fun, they join
sports because they want to play, sports is interesting, they are inspired to compete in athletic, sports is
to explore more, to meet new friends and other athletes from other places, sportsmanship is needed in
sports, being athlete is a stong person, joining athletics activities result a more positive attitude towards
school, and some who say that because of athletic activities there grade in negatively affected and they
prefer academic performance rate than athletic activities. Our study contributes to this body of literature
by explaining the impact of joining sports in academic performance . While data show that those who
participate in athletic activities have better in academic performance rate.

Recommendation

Although we find little evidence to support the claim that sports participation is
positively related to academic performance in a causal sense.
This research recommends athletes to achieve the balance between school sports and
academic by managing time, stay motive, organize, priorities and remember to have balance.

This research recommends advisers to study more circumstances and guide students in
education.

This research recommends coaches to develop communication skill and never stop
trying to improve athletes and believe in your athletes-they believe in you.

This research recommends students to participate in sports not optional but necessary
in education.

This research recommends school to make a programs and policies designed to

encourage sports are unlikely to produce important contemporaneous positive effects on student
grades.

We found that there were positive effects of sports participation on grades, self-
concepts, and educational aspirations in addition to a negative effect on discipline problems. This study
was conducted with limited time and resources so a further study about the topic is recommended.
