Topic

Solid Waste Management System

Objectives

 To improve students’ knowledge on solid waste management particularly focusing in

proper collection, storage and disposal.
 To provide an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their creativity and analytical
ability through practical scenarios.
 To develop report writing and presentation skills of students.

Introduction

Management of waste has become a critical environmental concern in Sri Lanka. Due
to the changing consumption patterns together with increased population, rapid
economic growth, urbanization and industrial development, the generation of solid
waste has increased over previous decades. Waste from residential, commercial,
industrial and hospital premises comprise a large contribution into solid waste stream
containing many organic, hazardous and non-hazardous materials. This has caused
serious impacts on human health, and to the environment. Thus, having a proper system
for managing solid waste generated in building facilities is utmost importance both in
terms of minimizing waste generation as well as managing the generated solid waste
effectively.

Task

Students are required to select a facility belonging to one of the following categories and
carry out the tasks mentioned subsequently.
Hotel Office Building Manufacturing facility
Heath Care Facility Shopping Complex Construction site
Educational Facility Apartment Airport
Port
T1) Identify different types of solid waste generated in the selected facility and the
locations/activities of waste generation.
T2) Investigate the existing solid waste management system in the selected facility to
identify waste collection, storage, processing and disposal mechanisms used.
T3) Identify the issues in existing solid waste management system in the particular
facility.
T4) Develop a solid waste management system for the selected facility by means of
following;
 Strategies for solid waste minimisation
 Mechanism for the collection of solid waste within the premises
 Solid waste storing mechanism/suitable locations ( incompliance with relevant
standards applicable in Sri Lanka)
 Solid waste processing and/or disposing mechanism
You are required to support the proposed solid waste management system with appropriate
drawings and supportive documents (legislative documents, standards etc) where
necessary.

Methodology

 Students shall work in groups of maximum four (04) members.

 Students are expected to produce a written report and should participate in the
workshop.
Report

 The report shall be word processed on both side of A4 paper, neatly presented as a
bound document and should be limited to a maximum of 5000 words.
 The report shall contain;
a) Coursework Brief
b) An introduction
c) The text (preferably in appropriate chapters)
d) Conclusions
e) References in accordance with APA referencing system
f) Supportive documents, drawings etc
Workshop for developing and demonstrating the model
 Students are required to participate one day workshop and should prepare a model to
present findings relating to proposed solid waste management system of the selected
facility.
 Developing the model will take place in the morning session and the demonstration is
in the afternoon session.
 All students must participate in the workshop.
 You may be cross-examined by the assessors on aspects that require further
clarification throughout the workshop.
