Question 1.15. Force Balance -

ΣFX = RX − F Sinθ = 0
ΣFY = −100 + RY − F Cosθ = 0
From the above two equations, we can find RX and RY in terms of F . Now coming to the
value of F to hold the foot pedal in static equilibrium, we need to balance the moments of
the forces about O (Taking counter-clockwise to be the positive direction)

ΣMO = 100 ∗ 250 − F ∗ L = 0.

We also need the value of L, which is the following
150
LCosθ = 150 ⇒ L = .
Cosθ
Therefore,
100 ∗ 250
F = Cosθ.
150
Total reaction force at O then becomes
q
2
RO = RX + RY2 .

Question 1.22. Let the reaction forces at A, B and C be RA , RB and RC respectively
(Bold letters being vectors), where

RA = RAx i + RAy j + RAz k

RB = RBx i + RBy j + RBz k

RC = RCx i + RCy j + RCz k,
i, j and k being the unit vectors along x, y and z axes respectively. The z axis is perpendicular
to the plane of the frame, pointing upwards. Therefore, in total, we have 9 unknowns. Hence,
we need 9 equations to solve them.
Force balance (3 equations) -

RA + RB + RC − (8kN )k = 0.

Moment balance about any two points from A, B and C would give us the remaining 6
equations. One case would be, say, the moment balance about B -

ΣMB = rA/B × RA + rD/B × (−8kN k) + rC/B × RC = 0

where rA/B is the vector from B to A, and so on.

Hence, we have 9 scalar equations and 9 scalar unknowns, solving which would lead us to
the reaction forces at A, B and C.

Question 1.34. When car moves up the hill, friction on the rear wheel is upwards (rear-
drive) and downwards on the front wheel. When car is just about to slip, the friction on
the rear wheel acts in the same direction (upwards) and friction on the front wheel changes
direction (upwards). At this moment taking limiting value of friction on the front wheel as
zero .

Question 1.36. Equilibrium of forces at log I:

ΣFx = 0 ⇒ RA sin(30 − θ) = RB sin(30 + θ)

ΣFy = 0 ⇒ RA cos(30 − θ) + RB cos(30 + θ) = W
sin(30 + θ) sin(30 − θ)
∴ RA = W , RB = W
sin 60 sin 60
Equilibrium of forces at log II:

ΣFx = 0 ⇒ RC cos θ + RB sin(30 + θ) = RD sin θ

ΣFy = 0 ⇒ RC sin θ + RD cos θ = W + RB cos(30 + θ)
RC ≥ 0, for logs to remain stationary, RC = 0.
From last two equations:

RB sin(30 + θ) cot θ = W + RB cos(30 + θ)

sin(30 − θ) sin(30 − θ)
⇒W sin(30 + θ) cot θ = W + W cos(30 + θ)
sin 60 sin 60
Solving, we get:

θ = 10.890
