UCS2 Objective Statement

The objective of the UCS2 project is to enlarge ACME’s market share in

building environmental controls. This new business-critical product will be
suitable for a wider range of buildings than the present UCS1. The UCS2 will
exploit new technology and opportunities presented by increasing awareness
of the need for energy conservation and rising utility costs. The system
available at launch will have the functionality of the UCS1, plus new
environmental controls for air quality, room occupation, and lighting. The
UCS2 will reduce production and product unit cost below that of the UCS1.
The UCS2 system will be developed by a multidiscipline team and will be
ready for production as soon as possible after approval to proceed.
Production will be housed in a new production facility. A new sales team will
be recruited to sell the UCS2 into new markets.

We are assuming no budget restrictions at this time.

Suggested Solution to
Hands-On Exercise 5.2:
UCS2 Resource Optimization

296S/HO3/D.1/712/C.1
Suggested Solution to Hands-On Exercise 5.2
 Replace Albert with Jean on task H; Albert not over-allocated
 Replace Marie with Contractor on tasks D and G
 Replace Marie with Leslie on tasks C and F; Marie not over-allocated
 Replace Jean with Marie on task E; Jean not over-allocated
 Move non-critical task I and dependent task K to start one day later using float
 Replace Leslie with Contractor on tasks I and K; Leslie not over-allocated
 Extend duration of task E from 3 to 6 days (assuming this task can be extended, and using float)
 Keep Marie assignment to task E; remove Paul from task E
 Replace Paul with Marie on task K; Paul no longer over-allocated
 Replace Marie with Jean on task L
 Note:
• Reduced task E float from 7 days to 4 days, reduced tasks I and K float to 1 day
• Keep all critical tasks assigned to permanent staff
• Contractor is working only on non-critical tasks, with permanent staff
• Marie is working on non-critical tasks only with a lot of float available
• Task E extended to 6 days with single resource (Marie) assigned
• Jean assigned to all critical tasks full time for duration of project schedule
