Most of India has three seasons: cool, hot and rainy. The cool season lasts from october
through February. The weather then becomes mild, except in the northern mountains. Snow usually
falls in mountainous areas during this season. As the altitude increases; temperatures drup below
freezing. Southern India lacks a true cool season, but the weather from October to Ferbuary is not
quite as hot as durin the rest of the year. The hot season lasts from March to the end of June. The
northern plains get the greatest heat. Parts of the southern plateau remain cool during the hot
season. The nothern mountaines are cool or cold, depending on the altitude. The rainy season lasts
from the middle of June through september. During this period, monsoons (seasonal winds) blow
across the Indian Ocean, picking p moisture. During the other two seasons, monsoons blow from the
north or northeast. The southwest monsoons are of great importance to Indian agriculture. If the
monsoons bring enough rain, the crops will grow.

Agriculture provides about a third of India's national income. India ranks fifth among
the world's nations i total farm area. Farms cover more than half of the whole country. About 80
percent of the farmland is used to grow some od Insia's main foods – grains and pulses, the seeds of
various pod vegetables, such as beans, chickpeas and pigeon peas. The major grain crops include rice,
wheat, millet and sorghum. Rice leads all crops in land area. India has more cattle and buffalo than
any other country. These animals are not butcherd for meat, but are important to the economy
because the females provide milk. The agricultural land mostly produces sugarcane, cotton, jute,
rice, wheat, cereals and many other crops. India has the world's largrt cattle population. But because
cattle are sacred to Hidnus, the animals are rarely used for meat, except by Muslims and Christians.
Farmers keep cattle and water buffaloes for powing and for milk. Most commertial milk production
comes from water buffaloes. Hides from cattle and water buffaloes are used for leather after the
animals have died. Sheep are raised mostly for wool and sheepski. The production of chickend and
eggs is inceasing.
Most daily activities of an Indian family are centered around providing the main necessities
of life – food, clothing and shelter. The men and women usually have separate tasks. The men
provide the food and women prepare it and do most of the work around their households. May
Indians get married at an early age, girls between the age of 12 and 15 and the boys between 15 and
20. In some Indian tribes, the parents or other family relatives chose the marrige partners for the
young people. The idea of marrige for love was unimportant. Most husbands and wives became fond
of each other through years of living together and raising children. In other tribes, a man could select
his own mate. He had to persuade the girl and her parents that he would make a suitable husband.
He often offered valuable gifts to win thwir consent. To this day, marriage is a family affair and not a
religious ceremony.
