Lesson Plan in English Grade-9

Topic: "The Man with The Hoe"


Date: September 8, 2017

I. Objectives;
At the end of the lesson, 85% of Grade-9 students are expected to;
a. interpret literary pieces "A Man With The Hoe",
b. appreciate the literary pieces as means of viewing other people's circumstances
in life and;
c. explain understanding about the poem "A Man With The Hoe".

II. Subject Matter


a. Topic: "The Man with The Hoe"
b. References: PELC, II, English Book A Journey through Anglo- American Literature
c. Materials: Visual Aids, Picture, Chalk Board
d. Value: Valuing Circumstances in Life

III. Procedure
 PREPARATORY ACTIVITY
Prayer
Greetings
Checking of attendance
Review

 ACTIVITY
The teacher will divide the students into 5 groups. The teacher will assign each group a stanza.
Each group will read and analyze the stanza assigned by the teacher. They will write their own
interpretation about the poem in 1 whole sheet of pad paper.
The teacher let the leader of each group to report in front of the class about their
understanding.

 ANALYSIS
The teacher will elaborate the ideas of the students by discussing the poem "The Man with The
Hoe".

 ABSTRACTION
The teacher will ask students if they have questions or clarifications about the poem then
proceed to the activity.

 APPLICATION
The teacher will ask some question to students about the poem. The students will be included
in their performance task.

IV. Evaluation
The teacher will ask students to get ½ sheet of paper and answer the following question.
1. What is the image of "The Man with The Hoe".
2. How does the poet describe him?
3. What is meant by the line "What to him a plato and the swing od Pleaiades?"
4. What does the bent body of the man with the hoe signify?
5. According to the poet, who is responsible for the condition or state of the man with the
hoe?
6. As a child of the future, how would you respond to the question, "How will the future reckon
with this Man?" posed by the persona.
7. How does the society treat them?

V. Assignment
The teacher will ask students to advance read the poem “Sonnet 29”.

VI. Remarks
The topic and the activities are too lengthy so 1 hour is not enough. The rest of the topic will be
elaborated the next meeting.
