The Transformer Turns Ratio test (TTR) measures the ratio of the
voltage between transformer windings to insure that it conforms to its
nameplate. SAES-P-121
B19
Measure and record the turns ratio on each tap. Deviation of not more Sec. 3.2
than +/- 0.5% are allowed.
NETA, ATS- 2009

The ratio of winding voltages of any two windings installed on the same
segment of magnetic core is nearly identical to the ratio of the number of
turns of the windings. This relationship is expressed mathematically as:
V1/V2=N1/N2 SAES-P-121
B20
V1 = open-circuit voltage of the high voltage winding Sec. 3.2
V2 = open circuit voltage of the low voltage winding
N1 = number of turns in the high-voltage winding
N2 = number of turns in the low-voltage winding

Power Rating
a) Transformer data appears on an identification nameplate fastened
SAES-P-121
B21 directly onto the transformer.
Sec. 3.2
b) Transformers are primarily rated in kilovolt amperes (kVA).
NETA, ATS- Sec.7.2.2.1.1

Transformers can be used in banks or in parallel to produce the desired

capacity or voltage system. All transformers have a polarity and they
must be installed correctly to ensure their proper operation. If one of the
windings is erroneously connected, either the transformer will trip the SAES-P-121
B22
overcurrent protection device or the transformer will operate improperly. Sec. 3.2
Polarity of transformers will be verified to confirm agreement with the
nameplate and contract specifications.
NETA, ATS- 2009

Transformers are designed to be either additive or subtractive. The

polarity can be determined by the connection diagram or the vector
SAES-P-121
B23 symbol given on the nameplate.
Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- 2009

The standardized rules of the industry state that the high-voltage leads
brought outside the case are to be marked H1, H2, etc. and the low-
SAES-P-121
B24 voltage leads X1, X2, etc.
Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- 2009

A simple test can be conducted to determine the transformer polarity.

Place a jumper between the H1 terminal and the X terminal located on
SAES-P-121
B25 the same side.
Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- 2009

Apply a voltage to terminals H1 and H2 SAES-P-121

B26
NETA, ATS- 2009 Sec. 3.2

With a voltmeter connected between H2 and the other X terminal, obtain

SAES-P-121
B27 a reading.
Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- 2009

If the reading is more than the applied voltage, the transformer is

additive. A voltage of less than the applied voltage would indicate a SAES-P-121
B28
subtractive unit. Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- 2009

Perform a polarity test on each transformer to verify the polarity marks or

SAES-P-121
B29 H1-X1 relationship as applicable.
Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- Sec.7.10.2.2.3

Winding measurements are made to determine if any changes have

occurred in the current carrying path of the transformer. In particular, the
SAES-P-121
B30 terminal-to-terminal resistance measurement helps to identify the
Sec. 3.2
presence of high resistance joints and poor connections.
NETA, ATS- 2009

Check that the transformer is de-energized and isolated, that power

SAES-P-121
B31 supply devices are properly "locked-out".
Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- 2009

The winding insulation resistance test (also called a Megger Test) is a

measure of the relative and condition quality of the winding insulation of
the transformer and indicates presence of moisture. The test is normally SAES-P-121
B32
performed using a megohmmeter that may be either hand operated or Sec. 3.2
motor driven (motor driven preferable).
NETA, ATS- 2009

The megohmmeter will typically provide a constant potential of 500,

1000, 2500, or 5000 VDC (and in some cases even higher also newer
megohmmeters are able to select any voltage value from 0V - 5000V) to SAES-P-121
B33
be applied across the insulation with the insulation resistance read Sec. 3.2
directly from a scale calibrated in megohms.
NETA, ATS- 2009, Table 100.1

Insulation resistance test can be performed by using the Single

SAES-P-121
B34 Measurement (60 second test) and the Polarization Index.

NETA, ATS- Sec.7.12.1.1.2.5

Test insulation resistance of transformer windings by disconnecting

surge arresters and using a 10-minute dielectric absorption test.
SAES-P-121
B36 Windings shall be tested primary to ground, secondary to ground, and
Sec. 3.2
primary to secondary.
NETA, ATS- 2009

Dielectric test levels shall be in accordance with the distribution levels. SAES-P-121
B37
NETA, ATS- Sec.7.2.2.2.10.1 Sec. 3.2

Core-Ground Inspection and Test-The purpose of measuring the core-to-

ground insulation is to verify that the condition of the insulation is SAES-P-121
B38
satisfactory and that no other core grounds exist. Sec. 3.2
NETA, ATS- Sec.7.2.2.2.8

The test is made by first disconnecting the core ground strap, which is
normally connected to a pad on the underside of the cover near the
SAES-P-121
B39 manhole or handhole. The megohmmeter is then connected between
Sec. 3.2
the core ground strap and the tank ground.
NETA, ATS- Sec.7.2.2.2.8

Perform insulation-resistance tests, winding-to-winding and each

winding-to-ground. Apply in acordance with manufacturer's published SAES-P-121
