COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS

DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT FOR STATISTICS FOR MANAGEMENT II SECOND YEAR

1.Ten thousand student of dire dawa university are normally distributed with the mean,µ of 60 inches
and the standard deviation of 3 inches.

A. what is the probability that the height of any one student chosen at random is between 60 and 65
inches?

B. if a random sample of 50 student is taken, what is the probability that the mean height of this
sample will be between 50 and 70 inches?

2. A cigarette manufacturer wishes to use random sampling to estimate the average nicotine content.
The sampling error should not be more than one milligram above or below the true mean with a 99
per cent confidence coefficient. The population standard deviation is 4 milligrams. What sample size
should the company use in order to satisfy these requirements?

3. Asurvey of 35 individuals who passed the seven exams and obtained the rank of Fellow in the
actuarial field finds the average salary to be $150,000. If the standard deviation for the population is
$15,000, construct a 95% confidence interval for all Fellows.

4. Themean undergraduate cost for tuition, fees, room, and board for four-year institutions as $26,489
for a recent academic year. Suppose that the standard deviation $3204 and that 36 four-year
institutions are randomlyselected. Find theprobabilitythatthesample mean cost for these36 schools is

a. Less than $25,000 ?

b. Greater than $26,000?

c. Between $24,000 and $26,000?

5.ABC Tool Company makes Laser XR;a special engine used in speedboats. The company’s
engineers believe that the engine delivers an average power of 220 horsepower, and that the standard
deviation of power delivered is 15 horsepower. A potential buyer intends to sample 100 engines (each
engine to be run a single time). What is the probability that the sample mean Xwill be less than 217
horsepower?

6. A machine is producing ball bearing with a diameter of 0.5 inches. It is known that the standard
deviation of the ball bearings is 0.005 inch. A sample of 100 ball bearings is selected and their
average diameter is found to be 0.48 inch. Determine the 99 per cent confidence interval.

7. In a survey carried out in a large city, 170 households out of a random sample of 250 owned at least
one pet. Find the 95 per cent confidence interval for the percentage of households in the city who own
at least one pet. Does the result support a pet food manufacturer’s claim that 75 per cent of all
households have at least one pet?
