I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
Define verbals and gerunds
Recognize gerund
Create sentences using gerunds
Identify different usage of gerunds
Create essay, magazine, and brochure that talks about service using gerund
Perform a jazz chant with the theme of service and include gerund
Inculcate service to others

a. Motivation
Game: Act out these verbs: sing, jump, dance, cook, write, jump, etc
The first one who got all correct answers will be the winner.
Follow-up Questions:
Correct. However, not all verbs function as action word. We call this Verbals. We have three
kinds of verbals, the gerund, infinitive and participles.

Follow-up Questions:
How is the underlined words used in the sentence? As subject! These words talk about
something/describe something in the sentence.

Activity 2:
Gerund Phrase
• Finding a needle in a haystack would be easier than what we're trying to do.
• Needle is the direct object, and in a haystack is the prepositional phrase within the gerund
phrase.
Function of Gerund:
A gerund is a verb ending in –ing that is used as a noun, either as a noun such
as subject, subjective complement, object of a preposition, direct object, and
appositive.
Examples:
Subject: Serving your country is beneficial for everyone.
Subjective complement: My favorite task is teaching my younger sister.
Object of a preposition: You can help the community by sharing your time and
resources.
Direct object: Kim does cooking for the children at the orphanage.
Appositive: My only hobby, baking, is not boring.
Gerund as Appositive
The best form of exercise, walking, is also the least expensive.
Jogging, a sort of running, had become popular all over the city.
Her hobby, baking sweets, is a blessing to her family.
Subject Complement
My favorite hobby is gardening.
His hobby is playing computer games.
My least favorite chore is cleaning the bathroom.
His problem is not coming to class on time.

Work with your partner. Convert the following verbs to gerund and construct sentences
using its varied functions.
Run, Buy, Sell, Ask, Wait, Beat, Sit, Let, See, Cook
Describing a photo: Share a picture with your partner and talk about it using a gerund.
Example: I remember taking this picture. It was a weekend in July. My family was at
the beach. I remember asking my sister to take the picture quickly because the sun was in
my eyes. It was a beautiful, sunny day.
Activity 4:
My friend Bernardo liked to eat McDonald’s hamburgers. But he had a problem. He was
gaining weight. He decided to go on a diet. He stopped eating fast food and started
buying more fruit and vegetables. After a month, he had lost a few pounds. But he
wanted to lose more. I suggested joining a gym. Bernardo disliked exercising, but he
agreed to try it. Now he exercises every day and he looks better. He’s looking forward to
losing more weight.
