Learning Plan for Infinitives


Intended for: Grade-9 Champaca
Prepared by Jeremy Lois David

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
Identify the infinitive;
 Identify the function of the infinitive in the given examples;
 Identify the form and function of infinitive;
 Create the correct form of infinitive in a sentence;
 Construct their own sentence using the infinitive;
 Appreciate value of working cooperatively in order to succeed

 Greetings
 Checking of attendance, ID and uniform
 Cleaning the room and arranging the chairs
2. Recall/ Motivation

Divide into three groups. Complete the following sentences and write on the
board.
1. Last 2017 I learned to…
2. This 2018 I will try not to..
3. This 2018 I will try to…In
Follow-up Questions:
What can you notice with these sentences? Are there words or group of
words that are similar in each sentences? What are those?

Say: What have you noticed with these words?


Answer: They start with “to” and has a verb beside it. They look like verb but does not
function as verb.
These words are examples of another type of verbal that we call: Infinitives.

3. Lesson Proper

What is an infinitive?
An infinitive looks like a verb, but it begins with “TO”,
 To learn is very important.
 It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to
open it and remove all doubt
 To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society

How do we form an infinitive? To+verb = infinitive phrase

o To dream
o To throw
o To want
o To have

Activity 1: Identify the infinitives used.


To learn is very important.

Activity 2:
 Fill the blanks with the appropriate infinitives

How does infinitive functions? It functions as a noun (subject, direct object, subjective
complement), adjective, or adverb.

Role #1
Infinitive = Noun
To jog is the subject of the
***3 different types***
sentence.
• To leave the party would be rude. To leave …infinitive as the subject
• To jog a mile every day is my goal.

To stay and to win …infinitive as the Direct Object


 She tried to win the speech contest.
To win is the direct object of the verb tried.
 Lance does not want to stay. DO- receives the action of the verb; the things being
acted upon

• Her goal is to win. To win …infinitive as the Subjective


Complement
 My ambition is to become a pilot.
To become is a subjective complement.

Role #2
Infinitive = Adjective

1. The place to meet is the library

To meet modifies the noun place.

2. She is the one to call.

To call modifies the pronoun one.

To meet and to call are infinitives which used as an adjective.

Role #3
Infinitive = Adverb

• We came to cheer.

To cheer …infinitive as an adverb

Why did they come... to cheer

To cheer gives more information about the verb.

 This math problem is hard to solve.

To solve modifies the adjective hard.

 She turned to answer the phone.

To answer modifies the verb turned.

To solve , to answer are infinitives which used as an adverb

Activity 3:

Look for a partner and ask each other the following questions using infinitives.

 What do you hope to accomplish in five years?


 What are you willing to sacrifice for your family?
 What are you proud of? What do you take pride in doing?
 As a youth leader, what are you willing to do?
 Whom would you like to see in the youth congress?

4. Evaluation

Cut out five sentences from magazine or newspaper with infinitives. Identify the use of the infinitives in
the sentence. Paste it in a sh

Activity 2: Rewrite the correct infinitive

A. Rewrite the sentences using infinitive constructions.

1. My sister taught me . (declame / how)

2. They haven’t decided yet (put / the furniture / where)

5. She forgot to ask (pick her up / where)

Task 3: Construct

Choose five from the list of the verbs given in the activity and construct your own sentence.

TAsK 8 Language in Use Infinitives at Work

Infinitives are the “to” form of the verb. The infinitive form of “learn” is “to learn.”

You can also use an infinitive as the subject, the complement, or the object of a sentence.
