Communication for academic purposes
Introduction ;
• ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION – Academic communication, also called
scholarly communication, refers to methods of communication that are highly
structured and generally only used in pedagogical settings. Academic
communication can include the words and structures used to express ideas, as well
as the methods by which ideas are disseminated.
• Academic communication presenting ideas effectively and formally in a scholastic
environment in institution of higher education these skills are contribute.
LECTURES
• To promote understanding via explanation of particular difficult concepts respond
to student misconceptions and difficulties in academic topics.
SEMINARS
• Gathering of people for the purpose of discussing a stated topic. Interactive sessions
for the participants engage in discussion about.
TUTIORIALS
• Enable you to complete assigned activities, develop specific skills and discuss any
problems you may have read the study topics. It is less formal than lecture.
Oral communication
• Makes use of words and involve speaking and listening, the sender and the receiver
exchange their thoughts or ideas verbally either in face to face discussion or through
any mechanical or electrical devices. Research shows that preparation is the key to
effective public speaking.
Self-presentation
• Set the right tone through the way you present yourself. Pay attention to personal
grooming, choice of clothing and accessories. Avoid irritating unpleasant or
discourteous mannerisms of speech, gesture or pasture.
Research paper
• A scholarly article that contains the result of an original research or an evaluation
conducted by other to define a particular issue, find it, and provide new ways to
solve that can be used for further investigation of problems.
Academic writing
• Many people intuitively know the proper way to communicate in different settings,
for instance. The way you speak to your friends is usually different than the way
you speak to your parents. Academic communication, also called scholarly
communication, refers to method of communication that are highly structured and
generally only used in pedagogical setting. Academic communication can include the
words and structures used to express ideas, as well as the methods by which ideas
are disseminated. Academic writing is characterized by evidence based arguments.
Precise word choice logical organization, and an impersonal tone.
Types of communication in a classroom
• Classroom communication exist in three categories: verbal, non-verbal and written.
Verbal communication – means that anything that a teacher or students speaks loud.
Non-verbal communication – includes facial expressions, the tone and the pitch of the
voice, gestures displayed to though the body language
Written – process of conveying a message through the written symbols. The effectiveness of
written content depends on the correct choice of words, their organization into correct
sentence sequence and the cohesiveness in the sentence.
Communication for Academic Purposes
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. Recognize the importance of communication towards its purpose, and
2. Give the meaning of academic communication.
Academic Communication
Many people already knew the proper way of communicating in a diverse community
especially in a different culture and settings. It may not be practiced at times but some
people may know it intuitively. It is always incorporated the instance or situation wherein
it is shown that we have different manner of communicating towards our friends compared
to our family. In the previous lesson, it was discussed why such things happened. We
already recognized the role of communication in different aspect of individual’s life.
In this module, we are going to learn about academic communication as one of the
purposes of communication. Academic communication, also called scholarly
communication, refers to the methods of communication that are highly structured and
generally only used in pedagogical setting. It includes the words and structures to express
ideas, as well as the methods used to disseminate information. Academic communication
also includes ideas that are presented effectively and formally in a scholastic manner. If
you were attending college or attending an institution with a higher education, skills for
academic conversation is highly required. The common example of which is the manner of
conversation with your teachers and peers or any other school official.
Course Module
With these, we understand how much communication is important in a day to day basis, it
much used more often than how we change our clothes.
