To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this letter in strong support of Samantha Lumley. She is applying for a career in
nursing. I highly recommend her to your program without any reservation and support her decision
to pursue nursing as a career.

I have been Chair of the Cardiology Section at Riverside Community Hospital (RCH) for the last
5 years and at RCH since 2012 so I know Samantha well. We are a high volume percutaneous
coronary intervention (PCI) with 1400 procedures a year and as a busy ST elevation myocardial
infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center we perform approximately 400 STEMIs a year. Samantha
has been a strong asset to the RCH cardiac catheterization laboratory since joining in 2010. With
her prior experience as a cath lab technician since 2005 in St. Jude Hospital in Fullerton, CA, she
had no problems assimilating and then serving as a role model for other techs and nurses in the
cardiac catheterization laboratory. Riverside Community Hospital is one of the larger hospitals for
Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) with almost 500 beds. The cath lab technician is an
integral part of of the team and a highly skilled one like Samantha is indispensable for good clinical
outcomes such as door to balloon time and mortality.

In addition to her duties as cath lab technician, Samantha is the current coordinator for
Electrophysiology procedures. In the last two years we have grown into a high-volume atrial
fibrillation ablation center with Dr Edward Kim performing at least 5 atrial fibrillation procedures
weekly. Samantha has been instrumental in helping support his success. Without her coordination
and technical expertise, it would be harder for him to do these procedures with a typical average
case time of under two hours where in other institutions these cases can go upwards of six hours.

In my 20-year medical career, I have trained over 100 medical and graduate students, nurses,
physician assistants, technicians, internal medicine residents, cardiology fellows and
interventional cardiology fellows, many of whom have gone on to having great careers in their
respective fields. Samantha is on par with the best. I have encouraged her to go into nursing with
the idea of going into higher level management. She has the compassion that is needed for the
work, as evidenced by her interactions with the sickest heart attack and atrial fibrillation patients
and their family members. She is a team player and gets along with both staff and physicians alike
in her role as EP coordinator as well as cath lab technician. She is able to handle high levels of
stress during our procedures competently and performs at the highest level as a technician.
Furthermore, she is able to critically think through our procedures and offer attending level advice
during a procedure with the interventional cardiologist or electrophysiologist. As an educator
herself, she has trained both nurses and technicians and helped elevated the overall standards
maintained in the cath lab.

In summary, Ms. Samantha Lumley has everything it takes to be successful in whatever career she
chooses, whether it be related to her former computer science training in the military, to work in
the civilian sector as a cath lab technician. Her work ethic is phenomenal, and most importantly, I
value her as a friend. I give her my highest recommendation without reservation. Any program
who takes her will be lucky to have her and I expect her to succeed and excel not only in her
training but also in her next career.

Sincerely,

Patrick P. Hu, MD, PhD
