SECTION IV - FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA

Flash Point: Not considered to be a fire hazard.

Flammable Limits: N/A LEL % -- UEL% --
Extinguishing Media: Use any means suitable for
extinguishing surrounding fire.
Fire and Explosion Hazards: Not combustible, but
concentrated material is a strong oxidizer and reaction with
reducing agents or combustibles may cause fire.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full
protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained
breathing apparatus with full facepiece operated in the
pressure demand or other positive pressure mode.

SECTION VI - HEALTH HAZARD DATA(ACUTE AND CHRONIC)

Routes of Entry: Inhalation-x Skin-x Ingestion-x

Health Hazards(Acute and Chronic):
Inhalation: Inhalation produces damaging effects on the
mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. May cause
ulceration and perforation of the nasal septum. Symptoms may
includde sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath, and
labored breathing. May produce pulmonary sensitization or
allergic asthma. Higher exposure may cause pulmonary edema.
Because this is a 5% solution, effects are not expected to
be as severe.
Ingestion: Swallowing may cause burns of the mouth, throat
and stomach. Can cause sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea.
May cause abdominal pain, dizziness, intense thirst, shock
and liver damage. May be followed by circulatory collapse or
toxic nephritis. Because this is a 5% solution, effects are
not expected to be as severe.
Skin Contact: Symptoms of redness, pain and burns can
occur. Dusts and strong solutions may cause severe
irritation. Contact with broken skin may cause ulcers and
absorption, which may cause systemic poisoning, affecting
kidney and liver function. May cause skin sensitization.
Eye Contact: Contact can cause blurred vision, redness,
pain and tissue burns. May cause corneal injury.
Chronic Exposure: Repeated or prolonged exposure to
concentrated material can cause ulceration and perforation
of the nasal septum, respiratory irritation, liver and
kidney damage and ulceration of the skin. Because this is a
5% solution, effects are not expected to be as severe as the
concentrated material. Material is a known carcinogen.
Carcinogenicity: NTP-yes IARC Monographs-yes OSHA-no
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:
Persons with pre-existing skin disorders, asthma, allergies
or known sensitzation to chromic acid or chromates may be
more susceptible to the effects of this solution.
Emergency and First Aid Procedures:
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give
artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. Get medical attention immediately.
Ingestion: If swallowed, get immediate medical attention.

Skin Exposure: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water

for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes. Get medical attention immediately. Wash clothing
before reuse.
Eye Exposure: Wash eyes with plenty of water for at least
15 minutes lifting upper and lower eyelids occasionally. Get

4
medical attention immediately.

SECTION VII - PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:

Clean-up personnel must wear personal respiratory protection
and safety equipment to prevent skin contact. Contain and
recover liquid by absorbing on inert material(vermiculite,
kitty litter). Containerize for disposal. Do not flush to
sewer.
Waste Disposal Method: Must be disposed in a RCRA-approved
waste disposal facility. Ensure compliance with local, state
and federal regulations.
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storing: Protect
against physical damage. Store in a cool, dry well-
ventilated location away from incompatible material.
Other Precautions: To be used by qualified personnel only.

SECTION VIII - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection(Specify Type): NIOSH-approved. If the

TLV is exceeded, a half-face dust/mist respirator may be
worn for up to 10 times the exposure limit or the maximum
use concentration specified by the respirator manufacturer
or appropriate regulatory agency, whichever is lower.
Ventilation: Local Exhaust- X Special---
Mechanical(General)- X Other---
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles. Contact lenses
should not be worn when working with this material. Maintain
eye wash and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Wear clean body-
covering clothing including gloves to minimize skin
exposure.
Work/Hygienic Practices: Do not eat, drink or smoke in area
of use. Clean up spills promptly. Wash thoroughly after
handling.
