4.1 MINIMUM REQUIRED THICKNESS DETERMINATION

Based on API 574 clause 12.1.4, the minimum required thickness is the greater value
of the pressure design thickness or the structural minimum thickness per owner/user
table. For this piping, pressure design thickness shall be compare to Minimum
Required Pipe Thickness Table from SADAF SEI-3.1 clause 8.3. The following steps
have been taken into consideration in determining the minimum required thickness of
this piping.

a) Pressure Design Thickness Calculation (API 574 Para 12.1.2)

t = PD
2SE
= (48.95 Bar) x (60.3 mm)
2 (1378.95 Bar) (1)
= 1.07 mm

b) Minimum Required Pipe Thickness (SADAF SEI-3.1 clause 8.3)

The table generally applies to piping systems complying with conditions below:

 Fabricated from carbon steel, low alloy steels and chrome-molybdenum alloy
steels.
 Operate below the pressure temperature rating for piping systems or below 340
°C.

Based on Table – Minimum Required Pipe Thickness, the minimum thickness

for 2” NPS is 2.50 mm.

In conclusion, the preferred minimum required thickness for this piping is 2.50 mm.

4.2 CORROSION RATE DETERMINATION

Below is the corrosion rate calculation as per API 570 clause 7.1. Given that this is
the first thickness measurement recorded for the piping, the initial thickness shall be
taken from the nominal thickness of this piping and the period between the SAP start-
up date on 1st January 2004 and date of thickness measurement shall be utilized to
calculate corrosion rate.
Classification: Internal Use

Corrosion Rate = t initial –t actual

Time between t initial and t actual (years)
= 5.54 mm – 5.10 mm
2019.397 – 2004.003
= 0.029 mm/year
4.3 REMAINING LIFE CALCULATIONS
Below is the remaining life calculation as per API 570 Para 7.2.

Remaining Life = t actual – t required

Corrosion rate
= 5.10 mm – 2.50 mm
0.029 mm/year
= 89.66 years

4.4 INSPECTION INTERVAL

As per API 570 clause 6.3.3, next piping survey and thickness measurement should
not exceed their expected next inspection date which is one-half of the remaining life
or the maximum intervals recommended in API 570 Table 1- Recommended
Maximum Inspection Interval, whichever is less.

a) Based on paragraph 4.3 calculation in this report, the remaining life of the piping
is 89.66 years thus; the half remaining life of the piping is 44.83 years.

b) This piping is classified as HIGH according to Petrokemya North and based on API
570; the piping is classified as Class 1. Hence, the maximum inspection interval
should be 5 years for both visual inspection and thickness measurement survey.

The API 570 recommendation from Table 1 is lesser than the half remaining life of the
piping, the interval until next inspection date as per 4.4 (b) for the piping shall be
followed.
