IDEA OF WRITING A NOVEL ON THE PHILIPPINES
Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines at the Paterno's residence in Madrid. January 2, 1884 Approved by: Paterno Brother's (Pedro, Maximino, and Antonio) Graciano Lopez - Jaena Evaristo Aguirre Eduardo de Lete Julio Llorente Melecio Figueroa Valentin Vertura Those who mentioned will contribute to the proposal of Rizal. It not materialize because they did not write anything Instead of working seriously, they wasted their time in gambling and flirting with Spanish señoritas. Rizal was determined to write alone.
THE WRITING OF THE NOLI
Toward the end of 1884 he finished about one -half of the novel After studying at Central University of Madrid (1885), he finished about one half of the second half of the novel. He finished the last fourth of the novel in Germany. He wrote the last few chapters in Wilhelmsfeld in April-June, 1886 February, 1886, Rizal made the final revisions on the manuscript of the Noli in Berlin. He was depressed during this time and almost threw the novel into the fire. Years later, he told his good friend and former classmate Fernando Canon “I did not believe that the Noli Me Tangere would ever be published when I was in Berlin, broken-hearted, weakened, and discouraged from hunger and deprivation. I was on the point of throwing my work into the fire as a thing accursed and fit only to die.”
VIOLA, SAVIOR OF THE NOLI
Dr. Maximo Viola A rich family of San Miguel, Bulacan. Wrote a telegram to Rizal stating that he would come to Berlin. Arrived shortly before Christmas Day of 1887 Was shocked to find Rizal living in poverty. He financed the printing of Noli and loaned Rizal some cash for living expenses. Rizal deleted passages in his manuscript ,including a whole chapter,"Elias and Salome" February 21,1887 Rizal found a printing shop named "BerlinerBuchdruckrei-Action- Gesselschaft" with the lowest rate of 300 pesos for 2,000 copies of the novel.
RIZAL SUSPECTED AS FRENCH SPY
Chief police of Berlin - paid a sudden visit to Rizal's boarding house requesting to see his passport. Rizal does not have a passport because during that time, it was possible to travel without a passport. He gave Rizal 4 days to comply with the document, otherwise he would be deported. Relationship of France and Germany Were Strained on account to Alsace Germany. Beacuse Rizal visit to the villages and little town on rural area it arouse the german authorities that he was a French Spy. Rizal explained to the police chief in Fluent German that he was not a French spy but a Filipino physician, scientist particularly an ethnologist. The police chief was satisfied and allow Rizal to stay freely in Germany.
PRINTING OF NOLI FINISHED
Day by day, proof-reading the printed pages March 21, 1887, Noli Me Tangere came off the press. He sent the first copies of the printed novel to his intimate friends; Blumentritt, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor, G.Lopez Jaena, Mariano Ponce, and Felix R. Hidalgo. March 29, 1887, he Gave Viola the galley proof soft the Noli carefully rolled with the pen that he used in writing it.
THE TITLE OF THE NOVEL
Noli Me Tangere is a Latin phrase which means "Touch Me Not" March 5,1887, Rizal wrote to Felix Hidalgo stating the origin of the title. "NoliMeTangere" are words taken from the Gospel of St. Luke which signifies "do not touch me." Rizal made a mistake. It should be the Gospel of St. John. (Chapter20,Verses13-17)
