THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Background of Study

To extend their enlightenment such as students, workers and jobless person.

Social media is one of the major significant technology on communication that is

convenient to the daily lives of people on todays and recent generations. It is a key for

the people to gain new public information and ideas, and different point of view in the

world happenings. Particularly, social media is an educational advantages and

entertainment on people are mostly the users of social networking nowadays, they

spend up any longer hours a day on social platform apps including Twitter, Instagram

and Facebook, there are teenagers that 30% of all time spent online and the finding

is it’s because of social interaction through the internet (Asano, 2017). In social media

there is a possibility of losing privacy and safety in our social life. Social media support

opportunities for connecting with friends, loved ones and people who are really

important to their life.

These users are now socializing the internet and take it away from the person

that has been socialize forever. Social media have been affected our social

intercourse by remaking the way they interact into face-to-face. However, they admit

that information, and also the dynamics of the social groups and friendships (Asur and

Huberman, 2010). In this generation, students should have the main aim to focus in

education and for their future career. However, some students depend on the

availability of information on social media. This means that it can lessen the focus on
knowledge and holds information. This study points out the popularity of social media

among student’s society. The social media evolved the world that producing closeness

than ever before. The application of social media among students has been reached

the high levels and it also affected their study time, poor grammar and wrong spellings

when they socialize on social media as well as they divert their attention from their

learning (Ndaku, 2013). Most of the students spend more of their study time through

social media than in their academic learning and this will affect their Grade Point

Average (GPA) (Helou & Rahim, 2014).

The fast rate of social media in technology has been a huge impact on the way

how people communicate on their daily basis. The larger of measurement use by the

youth today on social media are cannot be done by emphasizing. Over the years,

social media has been more famous among the students. Social media is the way that

can help people to feel that they are belong to a society. Due to the raising popularity,

the economists and professors are questioning whether grades of a students will not

be affecting their time spending in these sites. According to Choney, et. al (2010), they

believe that social media in technology such as internet is one of the most major

factors that has a huge impact in academic performance of a student’s neither

positively or negatively. Multiple of parents and guardians are worried that their

students are much more spending time on Facebook and of course in other social

media sites and they don’t even give enough time on study. Though parents are

bothered about their students’ constantly using social media sites but still many

students continue to apply these sites on their daily basis in life. It is revealed of this
background that this research study is being conducted to a certain that can impact of

students’ using social media sites on their academic performance.

Most of the students gaining their time on social media rather than in school

works. Social media has become the common international trend which spread across

in almost a year in every edge of the world. The use of Social media sites has been

increased and developed around in the online world that every people can create their

own content, can share and bookmark it in a very impressive rate. According to Asur

and Huberman (2010) It is because of it’s not so difficult to use, and easy to reach.

Social media has a speed that can change the public declaim in community and setting

the trends. It also changes the public discourse in agenda topics that has a range

coming from the environment and the politics to technology and to the amusement in

industry.
Review of Related Literature

Social media has been a part of every millennials life especially students who

are usually browsing the networking sites. According to Dollarhide (2019), Social

media is a computer-based technology that makes things easier to share new and

different ideas, thoughts, and information amidst of the virtual networks and

communities.

The advanced and improved application of social media platforms such as

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. has become a worldwide phenomenon for

some time. Social media is rapidly changing the way of communication in the modern

social world (Paul e.t al. 2012). Social media has been compelling to students and

influence their academic life. Social media may have its advantages but it also has its

downsides.

According to Shana (2012), social media is about interaction and communication,

students use social platforms mainly for chatting and making virtual friends. Ahmad

(2011) stated that social networking sites have a lot of advantages because it enables

us to keep in touch with our peers, family and friends and relink with our old peers and

help find new friends. According to Boyd (2014), students use social media to share

valuable information and to gather more understanding to their friends. Social media

also enables teenagers to develop their social skills (Lundahl, 2013). Social media

also improves their intellectual capability such as developing critical thinking skills and

problem-solving skills by playing different computer games. It also develops better

ethical thinking as they compare the family values from various documentaries.
Amin et. al (2016) stated that using social networking sites can satisfy their esteem

as users can present their selves and express their feelings to friends who think

similarly and have a common interest. Using social networking sites increases their

happiness and can reduce depression if being envy is controlled (Tandoc et. al, 2015)

although social media can also depress people especially students who are in a young

age (Blachnio et. al., 2016.)

According to Oye (2012), a student’s academic performance is usually affected

when they are using social networking sites. Social platforms are mainly used for

socializing activities rather than academic purposes. Students are more dependent on

the internet to access information that helps their academic life as well as their

entertainment although the internet may take a lot of the student’s time it only has less

impact on their studies (Wang, 2011). Wang stated that the impact of social platforms

rests on the degree of usage.

According to Lau (2017), social networking sites affect the student’s academic

performance adversely because it causes a gradation drop in the grades of the

students. It affects the students’ academic performance if he or she invests their time

in social media instead of their studies. Weale (2015) stated that most of the teens do

not have enough sleep that can cause insomnia.

Procrastination or wasting time is a major problem for a student. Social media is

highly addictive to those students who cannot restrain their selves is constantly using

social media. Prioritizing entertainment over school work and giving to much attention

to social acceptance and affiliation (Junco, 2012). According to Vujatovic (2011), that
students lack concentration and poor knowledge acceptance when they are spending

too much time on social networking sites. Those students, who use social networking

sites have a shorter span of diverting their attention in class. There are sites that create

a problem for educators because of the abbreviations commonly used on sites such

as Twitter and Facebook.

McGilivaray (2015), stated that teens use social media to cheat in exams, this

is because of the availability of applications that allow them to carbon copy the

materials in the net. Most of the students no longer work hard in their homework or

spend much time to learn since they can access exam materials from social media

and it loses its meaning and purpose of learning.

Depending on social media has adverse impacts on students. Social media

may encourage students to cheat on assignments and exams but students also use

social media to acquire irrelevant and useful information

With the phenomenon of social media sites and wide-ranging of using

networking sites, there are some that hold a point where students are distracted from

their studies and waste their time using social networking sites. Consequently, there

is a negative impact on academic performance. Nevertheless, others hold a view that

is rather constructive because on how students access to a wide variety of information

from around the world and it also enhances their interaction with the other students

with the same interest and with their teachers.

Theoretical Framework

In the theory conducted of the study by Englander et al., (2010), social media

will make the students engage more time in the internet aside of some educational

intentions. It is both to have negative and positive outcome by using social networking

when the students is academically overexposing in such a way it doesn’t enhance

learning at all and results to lower grades (41,42,43,39 and 44) and according to

Keenan and Shirri (2010), at some point it could be beneficiary for the students on

communication, new learning information and encouragement with their studies.

Social media can lead to collaboration and sharing new knowledge for the

students to learn and develop their intellectual minds (Junko et. al., 2010). However,

social networking like Facebook may affects the student’s behavior in during classes

that inherits low academic performances, and results to diverting chatting, tardiness,

and wasting time by random searching for entertainment purposes.

Some students of around eight to 17 ages were already adapted in using social

networking such as Facebook to set up their own profiles (Dowdall, 2010). Another

study conducted by Kuh (2011), student will encourage and motivate the students to

study well and participate on activities in school such as watching videos and other

entertainment data.

Interacting social media is continuously a world phenomenon usage on

everyday lives of people. It is being widely adapted and learn by many like using

computer to communicate and seeks an information on different websites that will

creates social friendliness. Kids and teenagers will take a step to realization that
internet sites can make them develop learnings, share some stories, and showcase

their private and public life (Ellison, 2011).

which people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal

messages, etc.

Academic Performance. Can be estimated for any student by its home

environment and learning skills and also by its academic interaction, and study habits.

Impact. The action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY
This chapter discusses the locale of the study, the respondents, research

design, research instrument, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment which

were applied in conducting the study.

Research Design

The research design used is correlation design. A correlational study

determines whether or not two variables are correlated. This means to study whether

an increase or decrease in one variable corresponds to an increase or decrease in

the other variable (Kalla, 2011). It is applicable for the study because it will determine

the impact of social media to students in their academic performance. The

researchers will use the questionnaires to gather data needed for their study. The

variables that were studied are the students on social media and the impact on their

academic performance. The independent variable is social media and students and

the dependent variable is the impact on their academic performance.

Research Respondents

There are 316 Grade 12 respondents that will be used in the study. There are

192 respondents for Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS), 67 for Accountancy

and Business Management (ABM) students and 57 for Science, Technology

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This will be conducted in Agusan National

High School which is currently located at A.D Curato Street, Butuan City, while Senior

High School Department is situated at T. Sanchez Street, Butuan City.

Research Instrument

The researchers adopted a study that utilize a researcher-made instrument that

will rate the question given. The tool that was used is the Likert-scale format with 4

responses, Always, Often, Sometimes and Never. The research instrument of the

study is a survey to collect the data and information that is needed. The research

questionnaire contains a positive and negative impact questions. The questions

comprises a total number of 18 items. For each questionnaire there are 9 positive

questions and 9 negative questions.

Research Procedure

The researchers will use random and stratified sampling techniques in selecting

the respondents that acquire the specific attribute. In random sampling, we gather all

the sections from each strand and put it in a hat and randomly picked our respondents.

For stratified sampling, we gathered the total number of population of the first strand

and divide it by the total population of the three strands and multiplied it by the sample

size to determine the equal number that would be used for the study.

A letter of consent was sent to the SHS Assistant Principal, Mr. Mario Y.

Orendain, asking for an authorization to conduct an interview on the school grounds.

The researchers were able to search for grade 12 students from the STEM, ABM and

HUMSS strand and asked permission to participate in an interview. The respondents

will be given a short orientation about keeping the identity, response, and data

gathered from the participants. The researchers will keep it confidential as an

assurance to the respondents and to gain their trust during the conduct of the study.

The researchers assured that the participants are protected in any form of

discrimination and any risk during and after the study. Thus the participants have the

right to withdraw from the study at any stage if they don’t want to participate on the

survey. Participants shall participate on the basis of informed consent. The principle

of informed consent involves researchers providing sufficient information and

assurances about taking part to allow individuals understand the implications of

participants and to reach a fully informed and considered freely given decisions

without the exercise of any pressure or coercion. Moreover, their gender and age were

the only personal data that will be asked from them. Afterwards, the researchers

explained how to fill up the individual assessment forms. The participants were asked

to put a check to the box if they strongly disagree, disagree, agree or strongly agree

to the statements given for every number. Also, the researchers gave out the

assessment forms to every rooms occupied by selected Grade 12 Humanities and

Social Science (HUMMS), Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) students

and Science and Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Lastly, the

researchers then collected the forms after the participants have fully answered it. The

assessment of the forms was done by the researchers through hypothesis testing.

Statistical Tool

The researchers will operate a statistical T-test for the hypothesis testing in

measuring the rate of the positive and negative impact of social media on students to

their academic performance. The T- test is a statistical test for the mean of a

population and is used when the population is normally or approximately normaly

distribued and ơ is unknownLet X represents a set of values with size n, with mean m

and with standard deviation S. The comparison of the observed mean (m) of the

population to a theoretical value μ is performed with the formula below :
