Summary of Findings

1. The profile of the respondents.

The distribution on the profile of the respondents as

of gender were forty (40) female with a 53.3% and thirty-

five (35) male with a percentage of 46.6 senior high school

students with a total of seventy-five (75) students that

were involved in this study.

As of age, majority of the respondents are seventeen

(17) years old with a percentage of 40%, followed by eighteen

(18) years old and above with a percentage of thirty-two (32),

there are also students with an age of sixteen (16) with a

percentage of 26.67 and lastly 1.3 percent with the age of

fifteen (15).

In terms of the number of respondents in academic

strand, majority were enrolled in General Academic Strand

(GAS)that were composed of three (3) sections, the Saint Peter

Section, Saint Pedro Calungsod Section and the Saint Francis

Section. Each section have fifteen (15) respondents with a

total of thirty (30) respondents and with a total of forty

percent (40%) while the Accounting, Business and Management

(ABM)Strand, Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand

and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics


(STEM)Strand have the same number of respondents which is

fifteen (15) percent of respondents.


2. Social media that the respondents used the most.

This study presented six well known social media

applications which the respondents chose what they think is

the most used applications for them. These are “Facebook”,

“YouTube”, “Instagram”, “Twitter”, and “Wattpad”.

Among the social media applications, fifty-one (51)

respondents with a percentage of sixty-eight (68) chose

“Facebook” as the most used application which means this is

the most popular social media based on the survey. Second was

the social media application “YouTube” with a frequency of

fifteen (15) and with a percentage of twenty (20). Third, was

the “Instagram” with a frequency of four (4) and a percentage

of 5.3. Fourth was the “Twitter with a frequency of three (3)

and a percentage of four (4). And lastly, “Wattpad” have a

total frequency of two (2) with a percentage of 2.67 which

considered the least used social media application.


3. Minutes/hours in a day the respondents spend on social

media.

Based on the gathered results, respondents were allowed

to choose only one from the list provided on the amount of

time they spent on social media. Among the ten (10)

statements, “2 hours” got the highest frequency which is 17

with a percentage of 22.67. Most of them who have chosen are

female with a frequency of ten (10) and male got a frequency

of seven (7). Followed by “4 or more hours” gathered a

frequency of 13 with a percentage of 17.3. Most of them who

have chosen are female with a frequency of eight (8) and male

got a frequency of five (5). Meanwhile, the statement “3

hours” gathered a frequency of 9 with a percentage of 12.

Most of them who have chosen are female with the frequency of

six (6) and male got a frequency of 6. ”5-10 minutes & 1 hour”

got the same frequency of eight (8) with a percentage of 10.67.

Most of them who have chosen are female with the frequency of

six (6) and male got a frequency of two (2). ”16-20 minutes”

gathered a frequency of five (5) with the percentage of 6.67.

Most of them who have chosen are female with a frequency of

four (4) and male got a frequency of one (1). ”21-30 minutes”

gathered a frequency of six (6) with a percentage of 8. Most

of them who have chosen are female with a frequency of four


(4) and male got a frequency of two (2). ”31-40 minutes”

gathered a frequency of four (4) with a percentage of 5.3. Most

of them who have chosen are female with the frequency of three

(3) and male got a frequency of one (1). ”11-15 minutes”

gathered a frequency of three (3) with a percentage of four 4.

Only females who choose this with the frequency of 3.

Lastly,”41-50 minutes” got a frequency of 2 with a percentage

of 2.67. Only one female who chosen this with a frequency of

two (2). According to Marrie Ennis-O'Connor(2019), roughly

45% of the world’s population use social media, with an

average of 2 hours spent per day on social media. The results

shows that two (2) hours got the highest time spent by the

respondents. It indicates that respondents are spending too

much time in social media. The rest are understandable.


4. Purpose of using social media of the students.

 To communicate. Social media are online technology

platforms that help to connect people together far and

near. It is used to build relationship among people.

 Academic purposes. It is easier to access information,

provide information through internet.

 To fight Boredom. Social media are an effective way to

promote students’ engagement as it enables shy,

intimidated or bored students to share ideas and

express their opinions in a more comfortable way.

 Serves as Entertainment. More and more students use

the internet as their source of entertainment instead

of watching television programs and movies.

 To socialize. Students meet new friends through social

media.

 To share opinions/thoughts. Students learned by

sharing their simple opinions and thoughts.


5. How often the respondents spend time with their family.

Each respondent has chosen one of the seven (7)

choices which the researchers provided. The following

choices are; students spend time with their family always;

usually; occasionally; frequently; once in a while; rarely;

seldom; scarcely; almost never; and never.

Among the seven (7) choices, “usually” got the highest

frequency of thirty-nine (39) with a percentage of 52. Most

of them who have chosen are female with a frequency of twenty-

two (22) and male got a frequency of seventeen (17). Followed

by “always” got a frequency of twenty (20) with a percentage

of 26.67. Most of them who have chosen are female with a

frequency of 13 and male got a frequency of 7.

”Frequently” gathered a frequency of 9 with a percentage of

12. Most of them who have chosen are female with a frequency

of six (6) and male got a frequency of three (3).

“Occasionally” gathered a frequency of 4 with the percentage

of 5.3%. Only females have chosen this with the frequency of

four (4). Lastly,” once in a while, rarely, and almost never”

got the same frequency of 1 with a percentage of 1.3. Only

one male chosen this with a frequency of one (1). Despite of

too much attention on social media, the results shows that

respondents can’t managed to get along with their family.


6. Activities that the students do during weekends.

Among the six (6) statements, ”doing household chores”

got the highest frequency of seventy-three (73) with a

percentage of 97.3. Most of them who have chosen are male

with a frequency of forty-eight (48) and female got a

frequency of twenty-five (25). Followed by “using cellphone”

with a frequency of sixty-eight (68) with a percentage of

90.67. Most of them who have chosen are male with a frequency

of forty-eight (48) and female got a frequency of twenty (20).

”Watching television” gathered a frequency of forty-five (45)

with a percentage of 60. Most of them who have chosen are

male with the frequency of twenty-five (25) and female got a

frequency of twenty (20). ”Doing school works” gathered a

frequency of forty-three (43) with a percentage of 57.3. Most

of them who have chosen are male with a frequency of twenty-

two (22) and female got a frequency of twenty-one (21).

”Hanging out with friends/family” gathered a frequency of

forty-two (42) with a percentage of 56. Most of them who have

chosen are male with the frequency of twenty-two (22) and

female got a frequency of twenty (20). Lastly, “babysitting”

gathered a frequency of one (1) with a percentage of 1.3.

Only one female chosen this with a frequency of one (1). Doing

household chores is chosen by most of respondents during

weekends because it is the best way of having time with their


family. By doing it together it makes the work faster and

easier. Then they will have much time to each other.
