TIPS FOR BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCY

I. Creativity and Innovation


1. Provide new ideas and approaches to a project or a problem.
2. Initiate change in the office. Think of ways to improve systems, procedures, and employee welfare.
3. Come up with new ways of looking at a situation. Contribute alternatives to issues and problems.
II. Critical and Systemic Thinking
1. Know the nuances of your job. Be knowledgeable and have the technical expertise to handle your
tasks.
2. Understand the details of the papers submitted to you. Do not sign without completed staff work!
3. Come up with innovative ideas and share this with your subordinates, colleagues, and superiors.
III. Environmental Acumen
1. Navigate the politics involved in your job. Be able to manage pressures to ensure that appropriate
courses of action are followed.
2. Have the ability to implement projects successfully through proper utilization of resources. Make wise
use of resources. Apply savings to improve the work environment.
3. Maintain the continuity and stability of operations of the agency notwithstanding changes in
leadership and policies.
IV. Honesty and Integrity
1. Do not pass all work to your staff or other units if these would need your inputs and interventions.
2. Spend office time productively. Have a concrete contribution to unit performance.
3. Have good work ethics. Deliver on targets and work hard on tasks.
V. Judgment
1. Implement office policies consistently.
2. Look at all angles of the situation before acting and deciding.
3. Study all angles of a matter. During instances when you are uncertain, solicit for ideas and
information.
4. Make firm and principled decisions.
VI. Leadership
1. Mentor your subordinates to enhance their knowledge and skills.
2. Have good communication skills. Provide examples. Be able to simplify complicated concepts and
make sure that your subordinates or the other party understands. Often ask for questions and
feedback.
3. Inspire subordinates to reach unit organization objectives. Make your unit staff excited about reaching
the objectives of the unit.
4. Provide clear instructions on assigned tasks and set standards for the output.
5. Be able to harness the expertise of your staff. Delegate tasks to staff that match their capabilities.
6. Be seen in the office doing your work. If you are away, make sure the staff knows when and how you
can be consulted on important matters.
7. Have a clear picture of what the organization should be and what goals it should attain in the long
term, and steer it in that direction.
8. Inform subordinates of changes in the plans with enough lead time.
9. Regularly monitor work of subordinates.
10. Show difference and support subordinates in need of assistance.
11. Give clear instructions to subordinates and discuss accountabilities on expected results.
12. Inspire and challenge subordinates to do their best.
13. Mingle with subordinates and be regarded as approachable.
14. Promote the holistic development of self and others. Make sure the unit has timetable for staff
enhancement and development such as sessions for reflection, spiritual nourishment and relaxation,
inputs or learning of new knowledge and skills.
