Introduction

The department of education has crafted a new curriculum primarily designed for students who

wish to pursue a career in the shipping industry. The maritime curriculum which was divided into two

specialization which is stem and tech-voc will be tought to incoming senior high school students where

they will have options to work after graduation career, both have morning and afternoon schedules.

Student performance is variety of dimensions including class participation, individual written work on

papers and exams, and group activities such as project and presentations. Performance is important

because it is your qualification in order for you to get a stable job in the future. Working people will

need higher level of education to tackle the technologically demanding occupation. Academic

Performance Achievement is essential for the successful development of young people in society .

Student do well in school are better able to make the transition into adulthood and to achieve

occupational and economic success.

As of now public and private schools encountered an increase in student population that is why some

schools they divided into two sessions the morning and afternoon session. The DepEd data showed that

the anticipated enrollment this SY 2019-2020 is 3,087,646 for senior high school (Malipot, 2019).To

lessen possible overcrowding they are doing some adjustments for the schedules in every sections and

the teachers who are assigned to the corresponding subject, both morning and afternoon session.

According to Ministry of Education, Guyana (2016),School timetables are extremely important for a

variety of reasons. They ensure that no teacher is scheduled for too many back-to-back classes or for

two classes at the same time. Teachers are given the opportunity to modify lesson plans during

preparation periods and collaborate with their students. It also allows students to know exactly when a

specific subject is scheduled. A well-constructed timetable establishes a natural rhythm and routine,

which can be comforting to teachers and students. Every country has different kind of scheduling

system. According to the study of Williams and Shapiro (2018), on how school day schedules affects

performance achievement. On three aspects related to scheduling: student fatigue, time of instruction,

and instructor schedules. Data cover five academic years at the United States Air Force Academy, where

schedules are randomized, grading is standardized, and there is substantial variance in schedule

structure. Analyzing over 180,000 student-course outcomes, they find causal evidence of cognitive

fatigue brought on by scheduling multiple courses in a row. They found that students perform better in

the afternoon than in the early morning. They also note that instruction improves with repetition.

Heterogeneous effects by ability suggest that overall gains are possible. One of the school in Laguna,

Philippines. The student has ballooned that it is now faced with the predicament of addressing concerns

like course-loading of faculty according to their time and day preferences and most especially

accommodating students who thirsts for academic excellence on its available classrooms ( Augustin et

al., 2018).However, higher education in the Philippines is made up of more than two thousand higher

education institutions which include public and private schools. Most of those institutions have one

more local satellite campuses from different locations or regions, some have international satellite

campuses. In order to solve the problem they conduct a study to aimed and develop a new system that

will provide those schools with satellite campuses a new, easy and quick way of creating and generating

room, class and individual faculty time-table and the same time allows user to automatically detect and

prevent conflicts upon the creation of schedules ( Evale, 2015).

The researchers of the study choose the maritime building in university of cebu lapu lapu and mandaue,

specifically the 3rd and 4th floors because it is where the classrooms of most maritime students are

located. These classrooms are where students go once their session starts. This is also the place where

students go everyday except sundays, holidays, etc. The students also do most of their school activities in

the classroom. The students' performance will affect their grade. The vision and mission are as follows:

Vision - "Democratize quality education, be the visionary and industry leader, give hope and transform

lives." Mission - "University of Cebu offers affordable and quality education responsive to the demands

of local and international communities." The vision and mission of the school is not connected to the

study since the study is about comparing the level of performance of students that have morning and

afternoon schedules. Moreover, there are terms that is used in the study. First is performance, it is

defined on how students do their task in school. Second is schedule, it is the time when students show

up in their classroom. Third is attentiveness, how focused they are in listening to their teacher especially

in discussion. Fourth is participation, usually means students speaking in class, answer and ask

questions, and making comments. And lastly is attendance, it is a record of how often a student goes to

their classes. Today, schools are encountered problems because of the increase of students population.

In this situation the performance of students might be affected such as, reduces the amount of

education they received. Furthermore the researchers are only trying to find the schedule that can

possibly increase the level of performance of the students and make them more comfortable when

going to their classrooms and more ready to take on the activities in class.Based on the literature and

selected past researches, it can be concluded that student’s participation in the classroom will warrants

the effectiveness of the learning process. According to Liu (2001), there are four forms of student

involvement in the classroom, namely full integration, participation in the circumstances, marginal

interaction, and silent observation. However, these patterns of participation are not static at all times

and in every place. This is because there are student who may be actively participating in some

discussion, but may be passive or become silent in another discussion. Astin (1999), claiming that

students who are actively involved in the classroom discussions showed higher satisfaction in the

learning process. In full integration, students engage actively in the class discussion, know what they

want to say and what they should not say. Their participation in class is usually spontaneous,

appropriate, and occurs naturally (Abidin, 2007). Since 2004 public schools have been advised to adopt

the double-shifting session particularly for schools which experienced or continually having classroom

shortages and swelling class size (Department of Education, 2004).Breus (2006) More and more research

studies demonstrate that daytime sleepiness from chronic sleep deprivation and poor quality sleep has

significant impacts on daytime behavior and academic performance, as well as concentration, attention,

and mood. Based on a study conducted by Ferguson-Hessler de Jong (1994), it was found that students

who are active participants tends to have better academic achievement compared with students who

are passive in participation. Several studies of Kurebwa and Lumbe (2015) because of calamity, school

buildings have been damaged or worse destroyed and noted that double shifting is currently there.

Therefore It can affect the performance of the students commonly in most public secondary schools in

metro manila.

Anderman and Midgley (2008), proposed a theory that students with an ability or performance goal

orientation, which are concerned with proving their competence by getting good grades or performing

well compared to other students. And also they stated another theory which is self determination

theory that students need to feel a sense of competence and a sense of relatedness to others.

Competence seeking to control the outcomes and experience mastery. And relatedness is the universal

want to interact and be connected to.

The researchers aim to measure and compare the level of performance of senior highschool maritime

students, to be more specific, the researchers will measure and compare the differences of the morning

and afternoon students in terms of :scholastic achievements, attentiveness or participation and

attendance. Lastly, the researchers would like to find out if there is a significant relationship between

the level of performance and the schedule of the respondents. The researcher wants to know the level of

performance of grade 12 the STEM-MARITME students of morning and afternoon session. And aims to

compare the results of data by using a survey questionaire. It also aims to compare the level of

performance of the grade 12 Stem-Maritme morning and afternoon schedule in correspondence to their

class session. Lastly, the researcher wants to compare the level of performance among Senior High

School Stem-Maritime grade 12 students between the two schedules according to their Attentiveness or

participation, attendance and scholastic achievement. Students performance is essential for the

successful development of young people in the society. This study mainly focuses on the level of

performance of morning and afternoon session among Gr 12 SHS Maritime students of UCLM in the 2nd

Semester of School Year 2019-2020. If there is a difference on the level of performance among the

respondents between the session. And also if there is a significant relationship between the level of

performance of morning and afternoon session. The findings will be the basis for a recommending

proposal its either negative or positive.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study will use the survey approach of conducting a research. Specifically, it utilized the

comparative and correlational procedure. The principal purpose of the researcher is to compare the

level of performance of morning and afternoon session among senior high school stem-maritime

students and to know the level of performance of the respondents in terms of attentiveness or

participation, attendance and scholastic achievements. Also researcher want to know if there is a

significant relationship between the level of performance and the schedule of the respondents. This

study will use comparative design in order to determine the difference between the level of

performance of morning and afternoon session among senior high school stem-maritime students.

Inaddition the this study will also use a correctional design in order to determine if there is a significant

relationship between the level of performance and the schedule of the respondents.

Population Sample

The respondents of this study are grade 12 Stem-Maritime students in the University of Cebu

Lapu-lapu and Mandaue that are enrolled in S.Y 2019-2020. The respondents of the study are five

hundred eighty one (581) SHS Stem-Maritime students. To determine the respondents accurately, the

researchers will use the Slovin’s Formula where it is used to compute for sample size. The researchers

will be distribute questionnaire to all section of SHS grade 12 Stem-maritime students of morning and

afternoon session.

Research Question and Hypothesis

Is there a significant relationship between the level of Performance and the schedule of the

respondents? Null Hypothesis, there is no significant relationship between the level of Performance and

the schedule of the respondents.

Instrument

The researcher use a survey questionnaire which is a type of data gathering method that is

utilized to collect, analyze and interpret the different views of a group of people from a particular

respondents in terms of attentiveness or participation, attendance and scholastic achievements. The

next part of questionnaire will talk about the difference on the level of performance among the

respondents between the morning and afternoon session. It also includes the significant relationship

between the level of performance and the schedule of the respondents. To measure the level of

performance of the respondents, likert scale will be use to accurately come up with a concrete data.

Variables

The researchers will be studying about the comparative level of performance of morning and

afternoon session among senior high school Stem-Maritime students. Camparative is the similarities

and differences between two social intities. While level of performance is describe students when it

comes to their skills. Todays generation performance is essential that people must have because it is

your qualification in order to get a better job in the future.

Data collection

The researcher will submit a letter of approval to the senior high school principal in order to be

approved to gather in the respondents classroom. Second the researcher will create questionnaires that

will be used as the instruments of the research. Third the researcher will gather the data from the

respondents. And lastly the data will be analyze and will be keep confidential.

Data analysis

To analyze the data, number of statistical techniques were employed. As it relates to the level of

performance of the two different schedules. The researcher use a chi-square to knowdetermine the

relationship between the two schedules. This part of the analyses was conducted using statistical

package for grade 12 stem-maritime students of morning and afternoon session. The data analyzed

based on the frequency of reports by respondents.
