D-DAY '65 t o u r n a m e n t r u l e s i t i s o b -
vious that the G e r m a n cannot win! T O
r e m e d y this situation I strongly r e c o m -
m e n d t h e following r e v i s i o n s of t h e
tournament rules:
Airpower: The present a i r rule i s
too s t r o n g t o be either r e a l i s t i c o r play-
balanced. Instead, the Allies should
b e given 8 0 n o n - r e u s a b l e f a c t o r s of a i r -
power. T h e s e f a c t o r s a r e used like
r e g u l a r a t t a c k f a c t o r s with t h e following
reservations: 1 ) Their use is limited
t o 10 f a c t o r s p e r t u r n a n d 5 f a c t o r s p e r
a t t a c k . 2 ) T h e y m u s t b e u s e d in c o n -
junction with a g r o u n d a t t a c k a n d c a n n o t
b e u s e d e i t h e r t o c u t off r e t r e a t o r i n
exchanges.

a few f a n s s e n t c a r d s . F r o m t h e m I
found that m o s t f a n s p r e f e r r e d Land
Battle o v e r A i r & Naval B a t t l e , and that
m o s t everyone owns A. K . , Stalingrad,
T a c t i c s 11, D-Day, Bulge o r Midway.
One i n t e r e s t i n g i t e m that c a m e out of
the c a r d s was: "How in the H - - - did
Louisiana end up in the m i d w e s t ? "
Well, a l l I can s a y i s : "Only Avalbn

Odds Computation

T h e r e e x i s t s i n Avalon Hill g a m e s
today, something which h a s bothered
m e f o r quite s o m e t i m e . What I s p e a k
of i s the m a n n e r i n which combat odds
a r e a r r i v e d at.
T h e Status Quo
The p r e s e n t method i s a s follows
(quoting f r o m the WATERLOO i n s t r u c -
tion sheet): "Round off a l l battle odds
in f a v o r of the defender. F o r example,
if battle odds a r e 29 to 10, thus lying
between 2 to 1 and 3 to 1, i t i s rounded
off to 2 to 1. In o t h e r w o r d s a l l f r a c -
tions a r e rounded off i n f a v o r of the
defender. " T h i s t o m e s e e m s g r o s s l y
unfair to the a t t a c k e r and o v e r l y gen-
e r o u s to the defender. S u r e , e x a m p l e s
c a n be found in m i l i t a r y h i s t o r y of out
n u m b e r e d f o r c e s defeating o r getting
the b e s t of the enemy, but t h e s e w e r e
exceptions r a t h e r than the rule. We
s a w above t h a t odds of 29 to 10 would
be converted to 2 to 1, if we would fol-
low AH'S f o r m u l a , i. e . , " a l l f r a c t i o n s
i r e rounded off in f a v o r of the defender. "
H e r e the f r a c t i o n would be 9/10, p r a c -
tically another whole multiple, y e t i t i s
ignored and the battle i s fought a s a 2
to 1. Thus, AH h a s , in effect, c r e a t e d
a situation tantamount to a m i l i t a r y
miracle.
Insult to I n j u r y
As this w e r e not enough of a n injus-
tice to the a t t a c k e r , l o and behold c a m e
a n even s t i f f e r m e a s u r e with AFRIKA
KORPS. The odds computation table
which s u p e r c e d e d the old s l i d e - r u l e
c o m p u t e r , l e t i t be known that hence-
f o r t h such conditions would e x i s t m a k -
ing i t possible f o r odds of 6 to 7 to
be c o n v e r t e d to 1 to 2 o r odds of 4 to 9
to become 1 to 3 . H a r d to believe i s n ' t
i t ? Yet that's exactly what they did.
Some of you will say, "Well what g r e a t
e f f e c t c a n c o m e f r o m just t h a t s m a l l
change in p r o c e d u r e . I ' The t r u t h of the
m a t t e r i s , that i t c h a n g e s the whole a t -
m o s p h e r e of the game. The a t t a c k e r i s
m o r e r e l u c t a n t t o a t t a c k ; h e ' l l make
f e w e r spoiling a t t a c k s and l e s s soak-
offs. I t w a s no l o n g e r fun to be the
attacker !
The C o r r e c t i v e M e a s u r e
T o c o r r e c t t h i s situation, which h a s
gone beyond the point of endurance, I
s i m p l y modified the existing r u l e s in
one i m p o r t a n t way. Whereas up to now
a l l f r a c t i o n s had been rounded off in
f a v o r of the d e f e n d e r , now only f r a c t i o n s
of 112 o r b e t t e r would be rounded off.
F o r e x a m p l e , a 4 t o 9 would be a 1 to
2 b e c a u s e 4 when divided into 9, l e a v e s
a f r a c t i o n of only 114. Odds of 4 to 10

however, would be a 1 t o 3 b e c a u s e h e r e
the f r a c t i o n would be 112. Another
change which I included w a s t h a t not
only would the defender g e t the benefit
of the f r a c t i o n , but a l s o the a t t a c k e r .
Going back to that 29 to 10 which we
spoke about previously, under the new
r u l e it would become a 3 to 1 i n s t e a d of
a 2 to 1 s i n c e the f r a c t i o n i s 9 1 1 0 . Odds
of 1 4 to 5 would be a 3 t o 1 a l s o , s i n c e
the f r a c t i o n i s g r e a t e r than 112.
A B e t t e r Way
T h a t then i s m y s y s t e m of odds
computation. I f e e l i t i s v a s t l y s u p e r i o r
to AH'S method and that i t g r e a t l y i m -
p r o v e s the play of the g a m e s . T o r e i n -
t e r a t e , the s y s t e m involves only t h e s e
two s t e p s : ( 1 ) Divide the s m a l l e r f a c -
t o r , whether i t be a t t a c k e r o r d e f e n d e r ,
into the l a r g e r and obtain a quotient;
(2) If the f r a c t i o n i s g r e a t e r than 112,
go to the n e x t h i g h e r o r l o w e r odds a s
the c a s e m a y be, the r e c i p i e n t being
the one with the l a r g e r f a c t o r .

method employed by Avalon Hill f o r
many y e a r s h a s been quite a bone of

f e l t the s a m e way a s Stan Wolcott. In
defense of t h e i r s y s t e m , Avalon Hill
f e e l s that the c a r r y o v e r point, whether
i t be exactly on the whole n u m b e r a s i t
i s now o r on the 112 way point a s s u g -
gested above i s s o m e w h a t i m m a t e r i a l .
I t behooves the p l a y e r s , t h e m s e l v e s , to
b e t t e r plan t h e i r a t t a c k s s o that they do
not wind up with the 29-10, 6 - 7 odds,
etc. F u t u r e c o m b a t r e s u l t s t a b l e s , l i k e
the new one i n Battle of the Bulge, will
r e f l e c t c o r r e c t i v e m e a s u r e s in the
tables, t h e m s e l v e s , r a t h e r than i n the

and s t r a t e g i c a l p r o b l e m s which my
r e a d e r s have faced will be p r e s e n t e d .
F i r s t , you will r e a d the situation, d e -
cide on what you would do, and then s e e
the solution.
WATERLOO
Situation: By 1 P M on the f i r s t day
the F r e n c h have taken Q u a t r e B r a s .
The l o s s e s to a l l t h r e e a r m i e s h a s been
q u i t e low. B e c a u s e of a n excellent
holding a t t a c k the P r u s s i a n s have been
cut-off f r o m the Anglo-Allies. It i s
v e r y a p p a r e n t that the Allies can not
hold out f o r long.
Solution: The P r u s s i a n s m u s t a t t a c k
the F r e n c h i m m e d i a t e l y . Any with-
d r a w a l to Wavre would allow the F r e n c h
t o completely s m a s h the Allies. The
a t t a c k m u s t b e d i r e c t e d toward Genappe.
If the P r u s s i a n s a t t a c k toward the r e a r
of the F r e n c h it will be e a s y f o r t h e
F r e n c h t o delay t h e m . If, however, t h e
a t t a c k c o m e s d i r e c t l y on the flank the
F r e n c h m u s t engage t h e m . Now a l l
t h a t i s needed i s f o r the F r e n c h and
t h e P r u s s i a n s to exchange c a s u a l t i e s . . .
In the original g a m e the P r u s s i a n s
swung a r o u n d the r e a r of the F r e n c h a t
the s l o p e s of Q B . By c a r e f u l delaying
the F r e n c h was a b l e to cut through to
Waterloo b e f o r e the P r u s s i a n s had even
advanced t o Gennappe.
D-DAY
Situation: The A l l i e s a r e f i r m l y a -
s h o r e a t L e H a v r e . They have c a p t u r e d
Dieppe, L e H a v r e , Rouen, and Mantes.
It i s the beginning of the 4th week and
the G e r m a n r e s e r v e s have j u s t a r r i v e d .
The south p a r t of the Seine, the S o m m e ,
and the O i s e a r e in G e r m a n hands. I s
it possible f o r the A l l i e s to b r e a k o u t ?
Solution: It s e e m s h e r e that the
G e r m a n made h i s biggest m i s t a k e by
completely writing off the possibility
of a n a t t a c k a t L e H a v r e . T h i s probably
allowed t h e A l l i e s t o c a p t u r e Rouen and
Mantes and thus divide the G e r m a n s in-

to two p a r t s . Now a l l the Allies have
to do i s a t t a c k b e f o r e the G c r m a n . Two
unorthodox 2 to 1 ' s a c r o s s the Seine
would not only' i n s u r e the b r e a c h i n g of
that r i v r r but a l s o leave the A l l i e s
enough s t r e n g t h and m a s s to c a r r y out
a t t r i t i o n a t t a c k s a c r o s s the Somme.
F o r e v e r y unit the Allies l o s t a n o t h e r
would get to the f r o n t i m m e d i a t e l y but
the G e r m a n s , b e c a u s e of t h e i r h a i r y
e x t e r i o r l i n e s will eventually have t o
retreat.
In the a c t u a l g a m e the a t t a c k s a c r o s s
the Seine w e r e the turning point of the
campaign. H e r e , the Allies managed
to d r i v e a l m o s t unopposed to the Meuse
thus f o r c i n g the r e t r e a t of Superior
G e r m a n f o r c e s in the North.
MIDWAY
Situation: The Japanese, in a n effort
to c r e a t e p o w e r f u l a i r a t t a c k s h a s group-
ed a l l h i s s h i p s t o g e t h e r . The A m e r i -
c a n upon finding such a concentration
wonders how it i s possible to a t t a c k
with a n y s u c c e s s .
Solution: It s e e m s to m e that the
J a p a n e s e h a s left himself out on a l i m b .
If the A m e r i c a n a t t a c k s the J a p a n e s e
cannot s t r i k e back the next t u r n b e c a u s e
he d o e s n ' t d a r e r e a d y any of his c a r -
r i e r s . T h i s will allow the A m e r i c a n to
refuel h i s planes f r e e f r o m a n y a i r a t -
t a c k s . The Japanese can still get power
f r o m a s c a t t e r e d fleet if he c o n c e n t r a t e s
his attacks.
In the a c t u a l g a m e t h e A m e r i c a n was
a b l e t o sink both the Soryu and the Kaga
b e f o r e the Japanese could even a t t a c k .

c o m m e n t s any of you have out t h e r e .
I t ' s obvious t h a t a l l the above situations
a r e c o r r e c t l y diagnosed, s o I would
v e r y much enjoy to look over any odd
situations you might have.
Who Says "Bulge"
is Unbalanced ? ?

F i r s t off I would l i k e to s a y s o m e -
thing about that column in the July
"General" that s a i d "Bulge was un-
doubtedly one of the w o r s t AH g a m e s . "
I d i s a g r e e 100%. T h i s g a m e i s one of
your a l l t i m e g r e a t s . It i s perfectly
balanced the way it i s right now. In a l l
the t o u r n a m e n t g a m e s played in our
club we have found i t t o b e s o well bal-
anced that even one battle o r maneuver
could change the e n t i r e outcome of the
g a m e . In o t h e r w o r d s any action could
and h a s decided t h e outcome of the
g a m e . H e r e a r e s o m e of my opinions
on what P r i v a t e M a r c Nicholson s a i d .
THE GENERAL
The b a s i c g a m e i s by f a r t h e h a r d -
e s t for t h e G e r m a n s t o win b e c a u s e
they cannot advance. Engages of c o u r s e
do hold t h e m up m o r e but b e c a u s e t h e
basic game i s for beginners.. .this i s
a l r i g h t . T h e s t a t e m e n t that t h e G e r -
m a n s do not need a n y f o r t s i s a b s o l u t e l y
the end. How a r e they supposed t o
protect t h e i r s o u t h e r n flank south of
Bastogne.. . s e t up no t r e s p a s s i n g s i g n s
t o stop P a t t o n ' s T h i r d A r m y , o r p e r -
haps they should t i e down half a dozen
divisions t r y i n g t o s t o p t h e m in t h e
open while c a r r y i n g on a n offensive.Not
t o mention the f a c t t h a t if a n y d r i v e i s
m a d e in c o r p s s t r e n g t h i t would f u r t h e r
weaken t h e G e r m a n s b e c a u s e of the
n e c e s s i t y t o withdraw a division o r two
to d r i v e it back.
I a g r e e with the t a c t i c a l a i r power
to s o m e extent a n d that i t should b e
added t o if the a l l i e d i s not well a c -
quainted with t h e g a m e . But I do not
believe t h a t the a l l i e d player should b e
allowed t o u s e m o r e than s i x f a c t o r s
per t u r n and not u s e d a t a l l when a
s t r a t e g i c a i r a t t a c k i s launched (the
allied a i r f o r c e would have t o put t h e i r
a l l into t h e a t t a c k ) . A s f a r a s the un-
c e r t a i n o r d e r of a p p e a r a n c e goes it
does everything but give t h e g a m e t o the
a l l i e s . On t h e t u r n a f t e r the two SS
panzer divisions c o m e s in the A m e r i -
cans get in 14 r e g i m e n t s t o r e i n f o r c e
t h e i r positions t h e r e by n e a r l y doubl-
ing the s i z e of t h e d e f e n d e r s . By get-
ting t h e i r new a r m o u r in just previous
t o this the G e r m a n s h a v e a chance t o
b r e a k into t h e open and f o r c e the U. S.
to put the new t r o o p s into t h e l i n e a n d
not launch a big c o u n t e r a t t a c k . T h i s
r u l e probably s e a l s the G e r m a n c h a n c e
of victory a g a i n s t a well e n t r e n c h e d
enemy that i s a b l e to r a i d y o u r l i n e s
and r e i n f o r c e h i s engaged u n i t s a n d
g e n e r a l l y slow down t h e G e r m a n s t o a
c r a w l if not stop t h e m .
Nicholson's next suggestion i s s e n -
s e l e s s : occupy E l s e n b o r n e r i d g e in-
d e e d . . . h o w d o you think the G e r m a n s
a r e going t o get t h e Spa without c r o s s -
ing the r i d g e in two p l a c e s . All t h i s
r u l e d o e s i s t i e up one m o r e G e r m a n
unit and wipe out anyone t r y i n g t o d e -
fend the r i d g e a g a i n s t the G e r m a n a r -
m o u r , not to mention t h e f a c t that t h e
G e r m a n s could c r o s s t h e mountains
west of Stavolt and cut off the d e f e n d e r s .
His l a s t point h a s s o m e m e r i t f o r a
poor a l l i e d player but a s it i s i t m a k e s
a G e r m a n v i c t o r y i m p o s s i b l e . All the
a l l i e d player h a s to do i s u s e t h e s e
units t o hold up the G e r m a n s on t h e
second t u r n while t h e combat units
build t h e i r f o r t s . When t h i s l i n e i s
broken they s e t up a n o t h e r and s o on
until the G e r m a n s c a s u a l t i e s make
advance i m p o s s i b l e . The delaying u n i t s
alone could hold up the G e r m a n s f o r
t h r e e d a y s and each t i m e t h e y ' r e u s e d
it gives a combat unit behind it t i m e t o
build a line of fortifications t h a t t a k e s
t i m e and t r o o p s . It i s u n r e a s o n a b l e t o
expect t h r e e panzer divisions to s u p -
p o r t t r o o p s f o r 12 h o u r s . I i n s t e a d
s u g g e s t a v a r i a t i o n of t h i s t o a m o r e
r e a s o n a b l e ruling. The blocking u n i t s
c a n only b e m a d e by a division and not
by r e g i m e n t s . In o r d e r f o r a division
t o e s t a b l i s h the r o a d block i t should
have two r e g t ' s l e f t unengaged a n d a t
l e a s t one of t h e m h a s p a s s e d through
the square. The German shouldbe able
t o gain a a u t o m a t i c v i c t o r y o v e r t h e d e -
f e n d e r s and a l l subsequent units t h a t
p a s s through t h e s q u a r e have 112 of
t h e r e r e m a i n i n g movement l o s t ( b a s i c
m o v e m e n t ) . The r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r t h i s
a r e a s follows. On rough t e r r a i n r o a d
you h e e d 18 f a c t o r s a l s o in towns a n d
b r i d g e s . They 'need 9 f a c t o r s in wood
s q u a r e s . T h e r e a s o n you need a divi-
sion is that e a c h division had a r e c o n -
battalion a t t a c h e d t o t h e m which w a s
f o r t h e m o s t p a r t independent of t h e i n -
f a n t r y u n i t s , o t h e r w i s e if you u s e t h e
r e g i m e n t s i t would r e d u c e t h e i r combat
by 15% with c a s u a l t i e s a n d a l l . I a l s o
f e e l that t h e G e r m a n a r m o r e d d i v i s i o n s
and the two p a r a - u n i t s should a l s o b e
a b l e t o c o n s t r u c t delaying u n i t s . David

A Plan for Amateur

Anyone who h a s e v e r played t h e
Bulge G e r m a n s knows that, if he d i s -
s i p a t e s h i s s t r e n g t h in t h r e e d i r e c t i o n s ,
t o w a r d Spa, along the Vielsalm-Hotton
r o a d , and f r o m C l e r v a u x t o Bastogne
and Houffalize, t h e A m e r i c a n u s e of
t e r r a i n ( e s p e c i a l l y on the n o r t h e r n half
of t h e b o a r d ) can slow h i m down until
i t i s too l a t e t o win, o r stop h i m a l t o -
gether. If the G e r m a n c o m m a n d e r
s p l i t s h i s tank d i v i s i o n s , t h i s i s even
m o r e valid s i n c e the overwhelming
m a s s supplied by t h e s e units i s s p r e a d
out and wasted.
To r e m e d y t h i s , I offer G e r m a n c o m -
m a n d e r s the following plan:
1 ) c o n c e n t r a t e a s many units a s
possible ( e s p e c i a l l y p a n z e r s ) in one
specific zone of a t t a c k .
2 ) t r y t o c o n c e n t r a t e the m a i n G e r -
man effort along the s i d e s of a t r i a n g l e
St. Vith-Clervaux-Bastogue & Houffalize
and m e e t up in the Bastogne-Houffalize
with a l l p a n z e r divisions.
3 ) defend the r e s t of t h e f r o n t a s
lightly a s i s safely possible, thus f r e e -
ing m o r e infantry units f o r the " s u p r e m e
effort. "
By following t h e s e d i r e c t i o n s , t h e
G e r m a n gains the following:
1 ) he avoids the m i s e r a b l e t e r r a i n

on the n o r t h e r n half of the b o a r d .
2 ) will outflank the e n t i r e n o r t h e r n
half of the b o a r d f r o m h i s position a t
Houffalize ( t h i s b e c o m e s even m o r e
pronounced a s t h e G e r m a n s push a bit
n o r t h . By r e a c h i n g Manhay, they f a r c e
the U.S. t o evacuate the Vielsalm-Hotton
supply r o u t e ) .
3 ) c o n c e n t r a t e a m a s s i v e f o r c e of
big u n i t s a t one point, a concentration
which u s u a l l y r e s u l t s in breakout and,
incidentally, the f a s t e s t and s t r o n g e s t
units in the G e r m a n a r m y being avail-
a b l e to exploit a breakout.
T h e g e n e r a l plan goes something
l i k e t h i s . The G e r m a n s t a r t s by attack-
ing St. Vith savagely while grinding
o v e r Clervaux and the mountains around
it. A f t e r taking St. Vith, the G e r m a n s
c l e a r the h i l l s dominating the St. Vith-
Houffalize r o a d (absolutely n e c e s s a r y
a s a supply route; t h e r e i s no o t h e r .
Unfortunately, t h e G e r m a n C. 0. will
find t h a t t h i s plan h a s a decided l a c k of
supply r o u t e s until h e is well pastHouf-
f a l i z e ) . Meanwhile t h e Southern f o r c e
h a s , with i t s 2 p a r a c h u t e and 3 panzer
divisions, h a m m e r e d through the moun-
t a i n s between C l e r v a u x and Bastogne.
Now, in one huge d r i v e , a l l the G e r -
man f o r c e s i n t h e St. Vith a r e a come
r o a r i n g down the r o a d t o Houffalize,
a n d , linking up with Southern f o r c e on
t h e l e f t flank, c r a s h i n g into Bastogne,
penetrating t o L a Roche and the road
junction just n o r t h of Houffalize. In
one f e l l swoop, 7 panzer. 2 parachute,
and s e v e r a l infantry divisions will b l a s t
a hole in t h e U. S. defensive wall. T h i s
i s the m o s t c r i t i c a l stage: if Bastogne
d o e s n ' t fall, the l a c k of supply r o u t e s
will k i l l the offensive, and if the U.S.
f o r c e s in V i e l s a l m a r e n ' t f o r c e d to with-
d r a w by turning t h e i r flank, i . e . the
Manhay-Houffalize r o a d , then the front
b e c o m e s s o long t h a t too many t r o o p s
a r e t i e d down protecting the flanks and
the offensive d i e s f r o m l a c k of t r o o p s .
Once, however, the c r i t i c a l stage i s
p a s s e d , Bastogne taken, and t h e Hotton-
V i e l s a l m r o u t e c l e a r e d , the r e s t i s a
g r a n d s w e e p f r o m the O u r t h e R i v e r t o
Rochefort a n d M a r c h e t o the Meuse and
v i c t o r y ! Usually, by t h i s t i m e the only
hope t h e U.S. player h a s is to delay
t h e G e r m a n s in the woods bottlenecks
a t M a r c h e and Rochefort and a t t a c k on
the flanks. To counter t h i s , take along
plenty of infantry t o help h a m m e r
through the woods, and guard the flanks
with only a s much i s a s needed, but no
m o r e . (Leaving too much o n the fladks
suddenly c a u s e s a d i s a p p e a r a n c e of the
m a s s e d a r m o r s p e a r h e a d ) . The effort
of stopping t h e m a i n G e r m a n ' d r i v e will
usually p r e c l u d e anything but minor
e f f o r t s i n t h e flanks a r e a s . If, however,
the U. S. p l a y e r d o e s t a k e the' p r e s s u r e
off the s p e a r h e a d and c o n c e n t r a t e on
the flanks, then push a c r o s s t h e Meuse
with about w h a t e v e r s e e m s n e c e s s a r y

Tilly Defense
The Tilly defensive g r o u p should
c o n s i s t of f o u r 6 - 4 units, one 4 - 4 unit,
t h r e e 1-6 units, and two 2-6 units. P u t
the 6 - 4 ' s on the T i l l y s q u a r e and the
s q u a r e d i r e c t l y e a s t of it. T h e PAA
c o m m a n d e r m u s t b e a r in mind that this
command i s b a s i c a l l y independent, and
can be r e i n f o r c e d only with g r e a t diffi-
culty. (An infantry unit a t Q u a t r e B r a s ,
taking the n o r t h e r n route to Tilly, would
r e q u i r e a t l e a s t five t u r n s to r e a c h i t s
destination.) The f o r c e i s s o c o n s t i -
tuted that i t c a n do one of t h r e e things:
A . If t h e r e i s a s t r o n g F r e n c h ad-
vance down the Thil-Dyle R i v e r c o r r i -
d o r , the units c a n g r a d u a l l y fall back,

poses.
B. If the advance i s of m e d i u m

Q u a t r e B r a s Defense
The Q u a t r e B r a s defensive group i s
subdivided into two s e p a r a t e c o m m a n d s :
A. Hill defense: one 6 - 4 unit, one
7-4 unit, and one 8 - 4 unit. The posi-
tions (using the c o o r d i n a t e s given in the
May '65 G e n e r a l ) a r e 7-4:AA-25, 6-4:
AA-26, 8-4:AA-27. This placement
precludes the F r e n c h f r o m getting 3-1
odds a g a i n s t the hill position.
B. Southeast r o a d defense: f o u r 6 - 4
units, two 4-4 units, t h r e e 1-6 units,
one 2-6 unit, and one 2-4 unit. T h e s e
units g u a r d the Q u a t r e B r a s r o a d junc-
tion itself. I g e n e r a l l y position the heavy
infantry in s t a c k s of two on s q u a r e s Y
and 2-23. T h i s g r o u p of units must
c o u n t e r - a t t a c k , s i n c e i t i s possible to
r e t r e a t only two s q u a r e s without open-
ing up the hill position to r e a r attack.

u n i t s . A 1 - 1 - 6 P r u s s i a n c a v a l r y unit
a t F F 3 5 o r even EE35 will m a k e it i m -
possible f o r t h o s e pesky c a v a l r y units
t o get on BB3 1 and 32 f r o m whence they
m u s t be expelled with a c e r t a i n amount

43-43. E v e n with bad luck, R e d should
a t l e a s t be able to k e e p the city in d i s -
puted control, thus depriving Blue of a
r e p l a c e m e n t f o r t h a t city.
T h e r e s t of the g a m e i s s i m p l y a
p r o c e s s of gradually wearing down the
blue a r m y with r e p e a t e d a t t a c k s . Even
if R e d l o s e s one m o r e unit than Blue
each turn, his vastly superior replace-
m e n t r a t e will win f o r him.
I believe that the b e s t p a r t about this
operation i s t h a t win, o r l o s e , the g a m e
will be exciting and f a s t moving with l i t -
t l e chance of both s i d e s settling down
on e i t h e r side of the c e n t r a l r i v e r l i n e and

However, the s k i l l c o m e s in being able
m u c h a s possible in the c a s e that the

s q u a r e . ) Suppose the U-Boat player i s
going to f i r e the m a x i m u m n u m b e r of
torpedoes-four. He plans to divide them
up among the t h r e e s q u a r e s that the d e -
s t r o y e r c a n r e a c h on h i s second move.
The b e s t way to do this i s to f i r e two
t o r p e d o e s to s q u a r e A, one torpedo to
s q u a r e B, and one torpedo to s q u a r e C.
