A Contextualized Lesson Exemplar in Earth and Life Science


Grade11, First Semester
August 1, 2019/ Thursday
I. Objective
Describe the various hazards that may happen in the event of earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and landslides S11/12ES -If-30

With the aid of several activities, the students should be able to do the following
with 85% of proficiency:
1. distinguish the different types of geological hazards;
2. locate the nearest fault line and volcanoes in locality/region based on the Philippine
Faultline System;
3. demonstrate the do’s and don’ts before, during and after the earthquake
4. create a brochure promoting/ advertising preparedness and disaster risk reduction.

Key Behavior Indicator (KBI)

Develop students’ sense of preparedness in various geologic hazards such as


volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and mass wasting.

B. Review
Okay, so are you now ready to learn for
another scientific idea/concepts? Yes Ma’am.
Our new lesson for today is still connected to
our previous lessons, remember the different
types of plate boundaries?
(The teacher will demonstrate the hand
gestures that taught to the students for them
to be reminded).

For a short review activity let us play this


interactive game I prepared. This game is
inspired by the famous sci-fi movie “Train to
Busan”

Any volunteer to manipulate the game here


in front and the rest of the class will answer.

I volunteer myself Ma’am to manipulate the


interactive game.

(The class will feel thrilled with this activity.)

the types of plate boundaries.)

Great! You passed the challenges in the
game and I think you are ready for the next
lesson that we’re going to discuss!
For you to have an idea about our new
lesson. Let’s play 4 pics 1 word.

Okay correct! So given that the illustrations
are evidences of volcanic eruptions,
earthquake and landslide. What do you think
are these events? How are we going to
classify these events?
These events are Disasters/ Natural Hazards.
That’s right. To be specific these are
examples of Geologic Hazards.
D. Presentation of the Lesson

Due to the movement along the plate


boundaries which could be divergent,
convergent and transform, various natural
hazards/disasters are generated that we
experience.

These afternoon we are bound to learn the


different geologic hazards and its mitigation.
With the aid of several activities, you are
expected to do the following:

1. distinguish the different types of


geological hazards;
2. locate the nearest fault line and
volcanoes in locality/region based on the
Philippine Faultline System Map;
3. present a disaster preparedness guide
with scenarios before, during and after
earthquake and;
4. create a brochure promoting/
advertising preparedness and disaster
risk reduction.

E. Lesson Proper

Based in this picture how do you describe or


define volcano?

It’s like a mountain Ma’am.


It’s scenic and amazing.
It has an opening or a vent.
How about in this picture? How will you
describe volcano?

It is erupting Ma’am, this illustration shows


that volcano is a dangerous mountain as it
erupts and extruding lava flow and gases.
So what could you infer about these two
pictures?
A volcano could be a mountain but is known
as an opening/vent/rupture of the earth’s
crust which allows hot magma, poisonous
gases and ash to escape from the magma
That’s right! chambers below the surface.
The summit of a volcano usually contains a
circular depression called crater within
which the vent occur. They are usually
associated with violent eruptions.

Looking back again to the Map of Pacific


Ring of Fire, you can observe that most of the
volcanoes (which is represented by red dot)
is commonly at the convergent boundaries.
Why do you think is that?
Can you locate there the Philippine Plate
where our country is located?

Yes Ma’am. (The student will point the


Philippine Plate)
Why do you think is the Philippines has many
volcanoes? It might because of the convergent
movement at the Philippine Plates and its
neighbor plates.
That’s right, and resulting to numerous of
volcano present in our country.

Types of Volcano

(The teacher will present the types of volcano


with the use of a song.)

We know that not all existing volcanoes in


our country still erupts, right? Yes Ma’am. Some volcanoes are not
exploding anymore.
That is right. Some are silently resting while
some are violently erupt. How do you think
we classify our volcanoes here in the
Philippines? I think Ma’am it’s the number of years since
the last explosion/eruption.
It could be.
The US Geology Survey has 3 classifications
of volcanoes known as active, dormant and
extinct. However the PHIVOLCS uses a
different set of classification.
1. Active Volcanoes
2. Potentially Active Volcanoes
3. Inactive Volcanoes

Using what you learned in your


English/linguistics in the use/meaning of
prefix and your vocabulary differentiate the
3 terms:
active, potentially active and inactive
(the students will differentiate the three
terms based in their understanding)
Active volcanoes- erupted within the last 10,
000 years based on the analysis of datable
material.

Potentially active Volcanoes- those that


appear morphologically young but no
history records of eruption.

Inactive volcanoes- those that have no


record of eruptions.

(The teacher will discuss the three terms


based on the answer given by the students.
The teacher will present a table of the list of
actives and potentially active volcanoes in
the Philippines and let them locate the
nearest in the locality)

Based on the short clip you watched, how
will you describe an earthquake?

An earthquake is a shaking of the ground


caused by a sudden release of energy in the

And what is earthquake in our dialect?

Just like in that picture Ma’am, an
earthquake drill is always conducted by the
schools specifically the Guintarcan NHS to
ensure and equip us to know what do if an
earthquake/linog strikes. To avoid panic and

As you see we are not actually at the fault
line of the Philippine Fault Zone which is the
longest fault line in the Philippines.

But why do you think we still experienced


strong earthquakes? (answer may vary)
Maybe because of the fault line from our
region which is the central leyte fault.

Correct! That is the reason why we often


experience a strong earthquake every
quarter.
For us to be much enlightened let’s watch
this short interview form PHILVOLCS. (Watch the short clip interview with
PHIVOLCS undersecretary about the Leyte
ruptures.)

Mass Wasting/Landslide

The Philippines is comprised of massive


mountain ranges that encompass several
cities and provinces. Slopes caused by
vegetation and excessive rains may affect
vulnerability of an area to mass wasting or
commonly known as landslide.

Given the geographical aspect of our


barangay or the Guintarcan Island
(mountains, and slopes are present in the
area). Are there any instances/cases of
landslide?

(the students answers may vary as they have

G. Application
DETERMINE POTENTIAL HAZARDS IN THE AREA
Using geographic and hazard map of
Barangay Guintarcan.
1) Students must survey the area.
Observe carefully.
2) Record what they observe. Indicating if the
feature they observed is more of a product of
erosional or slopes that may cause mass wasting.
3) Ask them to indicate in their maps where this
potential hazards are found.
4) Discuss result with the students. They can get
some points for discussion

can use pictures/ procedures in your brochure your brochure should highlight awareness
and preparedness.
