Sama’s second lesson

The best way to learn the different grammar tenses, is to think about the TIME PERIOD.

Past Simple:
We use the past simple when the time period is FINISHED. (yesterday, last year, last week)
I was born 1988.
I went to the beach last week.
I had a coffee this morning.
When I was 11, I liked playing the piano.
Remember, any time you mention a time period that is finished in the sentence, we use the simple
past.

Present Perfect:
1. We use the present perfect when the time period is NOT FINISHED (or not mentioned -
relates to life experiences):
What have you done today?
(What did you do yesterday?)
I have had 3 coffees today.

2. We use it to talk about RECENT NEWS: (recently, just, yet, already, etc.)
I have bought a new car.
They have sold their home.
We have seen her recently.
I've just seen her.
Have you had a coffee yet?

3. When we want to talk about life experiences (and we don't say the time it happened) we use
the present perfect, think about it this way: your life is not finished:
I have been to Canada. (something about your life)
I have never been to Canada.
Have you ever been to Canada?
Brad Pitt has done 20 movies. (his life is not finished)
Marilyn Monroe DID 20 movies (her life is finished)

Have you ever been to Chile?

Yes, I've been to Chile.
I went last year. (mentioned time, so we use the past simple)
Have you done your homework?

Past Continuous (Progressive):

we use it when we're talking about a specific time. (at 8 AM, at 10 pm, when he called)
I was sleeping at 7 am.
I was sleeping WHEN HE CALLED.
When the show was on, I was studying.
I was studying at 10 last night.

Past Perfect:
we use this form when something happens BEFORE something else that happened in the past.
Before I started working with her, she had worked with the company for 3 years.
