Chapter 1
Introduction
Social media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to
share content quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. Many people define social media as
apps on their smartphone or tablet, but the truth is, this communication tool started with
computers. This misconception stems from the fact that most social media users access
their tools via apps (Hudson 2019).
In addition, the school states that social media offers audience and subject
monitoring tools that are useful and it is one of the best platforms to extract data. You can
find out how the majority people feel about a particular topic or how experts perceive and
advice on specific issues. This can help students compile and produce useful content for
research. Whether students are working on an assignment, working on a project or trying
to gain more insight on a subject, some of the best information and results can be extracted
from social media.
Due to this fact, the researchers conducted a study about how students use and
deal with social media, the paper shows various factors and effects regarding to the
productivity of Science, Technology, and Engineering students of different grade levels of
Agusan National High School.
4. Are the effects of social media on the productivity of STE students good or bad?
The main focus of this study is to prove whether students regulate themselves in
using social media and whether it affects their productivity. The study will be done through
randomselection of 10 STE students per grade level.Selection shall focus on the junior high
school students of Agusan National High School. The study does not explain how social
media works but it covers the latter’s effects on students and their performances.
Students. They will be able to understand the effects of spending too much time on
social media to their productivity, for them to regulate themselves.
Parents. They will be able to assist their children in terms of time management.
Teachers. They will be able to effectively address barriers of their policies such as
no cellphones during class hours to alleviate learning quality inside the classroom.
Productivity. A trait that comes with efficiency. The state of doing something with effort
Based on Daniel Nation (2019), social media is a phrase that we throw around a lot
these days, often to describe what we post on sites and apps
like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others. So you can infer that social media
are web-based sites that allow people to interact with each other.
According to Teacher Boards (2018), digital media has become a significant factor
in many young people’s day to day routine. Many people across the world are beginning
to rely on technology throughout their day, to the point it can be depicted as a digital limb
for some users. We can’t leave a room without putting our phones in our pockets, many of
us even rely on them to wake us up to start our day. Social media plays a huge part on how
people interact with each other in the modern day and although this increase in
communication for young people can be a good thing, it doesn’t come without its
downfalls.
On April 2018, Teacher Boards also stated that productivity wise, procrastination
and media platforms go hand in hand when it comes to completing homework on time or
concentrating during lesson time. Doing anything in excess is never a good thing, and
spending too much time staring at a screen is definitely no different. Teaching the tell tale
signs to students of ‘How to know when you’re spending too much time online’ can help
them become self aware of their possibly damaging actions. These factors can be
significantly reduced when noticed and then managed. See below for the signs that
highlight the fact you are spending too much time online:
Checking your social media accounts is the first thing you do when you wake up and last
thing you do before you go to sleep, with many intervals in between.
Your confidence and self worth is decreasing and you are beginning to compare yourself
to other people you view online.
When studying, you are breaking too often to check Facebook or other platforms, thus
making the task longer and more difficult to process.
Your privacy and protection is also at risk when you create various social media
accounts online. Once you post something online it can stay on there forever, even if you
delete it. Teaching students about what happens to your information when it’s posted online
is important as it can turn harmful. Hacking and Cat-fishing are becoming all too easy to
do as the internet and information databases are rarely fully secure. Cat-fishing and internet
fraud can be damaging to a person’s reputation and can be difficult to prove due to the
amount of evidence and information you give about yourself to your online profiles.
Discussing the consequences of over-sharing and having an open profile is important as
many users are unaware of what information of theirs is stored and shared regularly. One
way to show the magnitude of how far your information can travel is to post a picture or a
status online asking your friends to comment with their location and share the post if
possible. Eventually, you can end up with comments from people around the world that
you may never have met or spoken to before that have no mutual connection.

METHODOLOGY
Respondents
Procedures
The researchers decided to pick randomly on the grade 10, STE students of
ANHS, as that the respondents shall give truthful and non-biased answers and shall
response honestly and responsibly on the questions being asked.
The researchers shall give a total of 10 questions each respondent. Each question
is formulated in connection to the title of the study as to how will social media affects the
productivity of grade 10 STE students of ANHS.
Students use social media at different times on a daily basis. Out of 23 respondents,
5 students said they use social media at 1-3 hours per day, 15 students use for about 4-6
hours a day and 3 students use around 7 -12 hours per day.
The students use social media for varied reasons. According to Al-Rahmi and
Othman (2013), the improved usage of Websites has become a worldwide phenomenon
for quite some time. Teens, teenagers have especially recognized these internet sites to be
able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personas, and showcase their
social lives. Based on the survey we have conducted, 20 students answered for
communication purposes, 15 students for leisure, 17 for research, 18 for updates and one
for other purposes, specifically for playing games.
The students’ usage of social media occurs at different times of the day. Based on
our survey, 6 students admitted into using social media on class hours, 23 students use on
their free time, 13 students said to have used after waking up, 15 students said before doing
their homework, 17 said after doing their homework, 8 immediately after class and 13 use
social media while doing homework.
For this portion, we had asked students to rate how essential social media is to them
starting from 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest. The lowest rating we have is 2 rated by
1 student. Next is rated 3 by 5 students, 9 students rated for 4 and 8 students for 5, the
highest rating.
Students have varying ways to handle or cope up with the distractions of social
media. On our survey, we had asked the students if they think social media is a distraction,
and give us the reason why. For yes, 8 students said answered that social media is a
distraction, one said because it urges them to procrastinate and cram, a few because most
students still use social media while in class and can’t control their addiction of it, social
media has entertaining topics that catches the attention of its user stated by one, and a few
said because it distracts them making them lose their focus to do their tasks. On the no side,
12 students said no, it is not a distraction. Two students said that no, because they are not
that into social media and rarely opens social media except for communication matters,
one said nope, because it’s like breathing to them, another one said no because it’s used to
communicating and gives update about the world around us, it makes us feel happy and
inspired through videos through YouTube for me said by one, not really because it helps
them when they’re stressed and a few others stated that in moderation and for other people
it serves as help, because it depends on how they use or balance it, if they let it distract
them or not as they also need to use it responsibly, with proper self-control and self-
discipline, social media becomes more of an advantage rather than a hindrance. And lastly
3 students said sometimes/ yes and no because one can’t bring themselves to close twitter,
especially if you have other things to do and because it helps with homework but is also
distracting.
